Etherjack is the Ethernet demarcation device and deployment model described in Abdul Kasim’s March 2, 2007 EDN article. It places a provider-managed boundary at the customer site, converts access carried over technologies such as T-1, DS-3, or OC-n into a consistent Ethernet handoff, and adds tools for fault isolation and service-level measurement. The key idea is to offer customers an Ethernet interface without requiring every last-mile link to be native Ethernet.

What Etherjack is—and what it is not

In Kasim’s 2007 article, Etherjack is presented as a way to deliver Carrier Ethernet across the metro-access network and beyond. The demarcation unit sits between the enterprise network and the service provider’s network. It establishes a defined User Network Interface (UNI) on the customer side while giving the carrier a visible point to manage and monitor the service.

The article describes a device and deployment approach, not a current product specification. It does not establish present-day availability, supported models, or a current standards profile. Its useful contribution is the service-provider architecture: make the customer-facing interface consistent even when the network behind it uses different access media and transport systems.

What an Ethernet demarcation device does

Etherjack’s role combines four functions that are related but distinct. The demarcation defines responsibility; media conversion hides transport differences from the customer; OAM helps locate faults; and performance measurement supplies evidence about service quality.

Physical demarcation and the UNI

The device marks the physical and operational boundary between enterprise and carrier networks, extending that boundary to the customer premises. The customer receives a predictable Ethernet UNI, while the provider gains a defined place to administer its service. The article also describes traffic management at the UNI, allowing services to receive different priorities.

Media conversion across the last mile

A carrier can use the demarcation unit to provide Ethernet at the customer handoff even when the access loop is carried over T-1, DS-3, or OC-n transport. In that arrangement, the customer-facing interface can be a familiar Ethernet connection such as RJ-45; the underlying access technology need not be exposed as the customer’s service interface.

This is an abstraction at the service edge, not a claim that all transport paths have identical capacity or behavior. The access technology still constrains the service delivered over it.

Operations, administration, and maintenance

Etherjack’s OAM functions are intended to help a carrier determine whether a service path is operating and where a fault may lie. The article names loopback, continuity checks, and trace route among the available fault-management tools. Remote checks can narrow the fault domain and reduce dependence on sending technicians to each site simply to discover whether a circuit is reachable.

SLA and performance measurement

The device can measure service metrics including packet loss, availability at a defined quality of service (QoS), jitter, and delay over intervals selected by the user. The article says a variance from the configured expectations can trigger an alarm. For an SLA, the metric alone is not enough: the agreement and measurement configuration must also define the relevant service, QoS, and interval.

How the model works over mixed access networks

One enterprise, multiple kinds of loops

Kasim’s bank example has branches reached by different T-1, T-3, and OC-n loops, carried over copper or fiber and, in some cases, involving multiple carriers. Without a managed demarcation point, delivering one consistent Ethernet service and SLA across those unlike paths is difficult. Placing Etherjack units at the ends of the access loops gives the branches a common Ethernet interface while leaving the carrier’s access technology varied behind it.

  • PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

The practical benefit is consistency at the customer boundary, not uniformity throughout the network. The carrier still has to account for each loop’s capabilities when provisioning bandwidth, QoS, and performance expectations.

Reusing SONET/SDH infrastructure

The article also considers networks built on SONET/SDH equipment that lacks native Ethernet interfaces. Rather than replace the legacy transport immediately, a carrier could terminate SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexers with Ethernet demarcation units and introduce an Ethernet service at the edge. That approach was presented as a way to extend existing investment and speed service rollout; it does not imply that every legacy path can meet every Ethernet service requirement.

How Etherjack compares with other service and transport approaches

Etherjack is a demarcation and service-assurance approach, whereas Frame Relay, ATM, private lines, and SONET/SDH refer to service or transport approaches. They are not interchangeable categories, so the useful comparison is what Etherjack adds at the Ethernet edge rather than a claim that one technology is categorically superior.

Approach Customer interface and access OAM and SLA relevance in the article
Etherjack-enabled Carrier Ethernet Provides a consistent Ethernet UNI over unlike access loops, including T-1, DS-3, and OC-n. The described demarcation point supports loopback, continuity checks, trace route, and measurement of packet loss, availability at defined QoS, jitter, and delay.
Frame Relay Identified as an alternative legacy service; the article does not give a detailed interface or access-media comparison. The article does not establish a like-for-like OAM or SLA metric comparison.
ATM Identified as another alternative service; detailed bandwidth or QoS comparisons are not stated in the article. A relative OAM depth or SLA measurement comparison is not stated.
Private lines Included among alternatives, but the article does not specify a common interface or deployment comparison. A comparative set of SLA measurements is not stated.
SONET/SDH Legacy transport can remain in place, with Ethernet demarcation units at SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexers to present Ethernet at the service edge. The article’s point is service introduction over installed infrastructure; it does not supply a quantitative OAM or SLA comparison with native Ethernet.

The article’s comparison is therefore architectural: Etherjack aims to make the Ethernet service boundary, troubleshooting point, and measurement framework consistent while allowing different underlying loops. It does not publish comparative latency, capacity, cost, or performance figures for each alternative.

Why carriers used demarcation and OAM

The provider needs a clear edge between its network and the customer’s. That boundary helps assign operational responsibility, standardize handoffs across sites, and make service monitoring actionable. When access circuits traverse multiple technologies or carriers, a defined Ethernet UNI and remote fault checks can make troubleshooting less dependent on dispatching personnel to each location.

The source article reported that metro access traditionally accounted for 70 percent of a carrier’s cost to offer telecom services. It also said carriers had demonstrated nearly 50 percent reductions in combined capital and operational costs associated with rolling out Ethernet business services in the access when a clear network edge and OAM/performance-management functions were used. Both are claims reported in the 2007 article, not current industry benchmarks.

Standards context: what the 2007 article said

At publication, the article identified the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF), IEEE, and ITU-T as key organizations shaping Carrier Ethernet. It cited MEF E-Line and E-LAN service definitions; IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile OAM; IEEE 802.1ag end-to-end network management; ITU-T Y.1731 performance monitoring; and IEEE 802.1aj demarcation work as part of the standards landscape then emerging.

Those references describe the article’s 2007 context. Standards and their status can change, so this historical list should not be treated as a current compliance or implementation guide.

Historical market figures in the article

Kasim’s article cited Infonetics Research’s 2006 report for worldwide Ethernet-services revenue of $5.9 billion in 2005, described as more than double 2004 revenue. The article also relayed the report’s forecast of $22.5 billion for 2009. These are historical reported and forecast figures, respectively—not current market sizing.
