ESPN’s recent app upgrade is a US rollout of 4K HDR streaming for selected ESPN and ESPN2 programming—not a change that makes every game or video available in 4K. ESPN said its iOS and tvOS apps would support the experience first, with other platforms to follow.
What the ESPN app upgrade adds
ESPN announced on September 8, 2026, that ESPN and ESPN2 had begun rolling out 4K HDR in the United States that week. The company says the update is intended to deliver clearer edges, sharper colors and smoother movement. A contemporaneous report says supported content is identified in the app with a “4K HDR” tag; ESPN said HDR badging would also appear on mobile as the rollout expands. The label is the practical way to distinguish a qualifying stream from other content.
The rollout is for selected programming, not a blanket promise that all ESPN streams are 4K HDR. ESPN named these categories and events:
- All ESPN productions of Monday Night Football, NBA and NHL.
- Selected live events across college football and US Open tennis.
- Marquee events such as Super Bowl LXI.
ESPN described the delivery system as an IP-based, endpoint-agnostic architecture developed with Evertz products Mediator/Overture/Magnum and VUE, modernizing the signal chain from capture in Bristol through delivery to viewers.

- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance

Where and how to watch
On iPhone
ESPN named its iOS app as one of the first platforms for the 4K HDR experience. Look for HDR badging on mobile as the rollout expands, and check the event listing rather than assuming a particular game qualifies.
On Apple TV
ESPN also named its tvOS app as an initial platform. The content badge indicates supported programming; the announcement does not identify which Apple TV 4K generations can receive the new stream. ESPN Support lists Apple TV (4th generation and later) for ESPN streaming generally, but that compatibility listing does not confirm 4K HDR support on every listed model. ESPN’s general device-support list is not a model-by-model HDR guide.

Other platforms and Disney+
ESPN said additional connected-TV platforms would follow the initial iOS and tvOS support. It also said ESPN content on Disney+ was slated to follow for US ESPN Unlimited subscribers. The announcement does not establish that the wider rollout is complete on any particular date, so check the app and event listing you plan to use.
What you need—and what ESPN has not specified
The available rollout and support information does not state a minimum iPhone or Apple TV model, operating-system version, HDR display requirement, or network-speed threshold for the new streams. Nor does it settle which exact subscription plans authenticate every 4K HDR event.

ESPN says streaming content requires a current eligible subscription package. ESPN Unlimited is specifically mentioned in connection with ESPN content on Disney+, but that does not establish that ESPN Unlimited is required for every 4K HDR stream. For access, confirm that your subscription or pay-TV authentication covers the event, then verify that the stream itself carries the 4K HDR badge.

At launch, ESPN said enhanced-app features were available to ESPN subscribers through a traditional pay-TV package or ESPN DTC. Those launch details do not establish that every feature is available on every device today. The new 4K HDR feature changes stream quality for selected events; it is not another name for the redesign’s viewing and discovery tools.

What to check before game time
- Open ESPN on the device you intend to use and find the specific game or event.
- Look for the 4K HDR badge on the listing or stream. If it is absent, do not assume the event is being delivered in 4K HDR.
- Confirm your ESPN subscription or pay-TV authentication can access that event. The published rollout information does not provide a universal plan requirement for all qualifying streams.
- For Apple TV, remember that general ESPN streaming support does not confirm new 4K HDR compatibility for every supported generation.
