Both ESP32-S3 and Raspberry Pi Pico can act as USB hosts or devices, and both are full-speed options. The decision is less about a clear winner in chip-level USB capability and more about what your board exposes: the ESP32-S3 adds USB-Serial/JTAG alongside USB-OTG but shares its integrated PHY between them, while the Pico routes RP2040 USB to a micro-USB port and may need additional hardware and power planning for host projects.

“USB 2.0” in Espressif’s description does not mean high-speed 480 Mbit/s operation: the cited documentation specifies full-speed mode. Treat both platforms as full-speed choices; the sources do not provide a controlled throughput or reliability benchmark between them.

What USB roles and speed mean for a project

Host and device are both possible

A USB device connects to a host that manages the bus—for example, a microcontroller acting as host to a keyboard or storage device. Both RP2040 and ESP32-S3 support either role at the chip level. The board wiring and the firmware stack still need to support the role and the peripheral class you intend to use. Raspberry Pi identifies the RP2040 controller as USB 1.1 with host/device capability; Espressif documents ESP32-S3 OTG host and device functions in its USB FAQ.

Full-speed is the relevant comparison

Raspberry Pi calls RP2040 USB 1.1, while Espressif describes S3 USB-OTG as USB 2.0 supporting full-speed. These labels should not be read as evidence that either board provides USB high-speed signaling. If an application depends on sustained data rates, validate the actual framework, peripheral, and board design; the cited specifications do not establish comparative real-world throughput.

ESP32-S3: OTG plus USB-Serial/JTAG, with a shared PHY

The S3 exposes two relevant USB functions: USB-OTG for host/device applications and USB-Serial/JTAG for download and debugging. They are not independent physical USB interfaces on the integrated PHY. The Arduino-ESP32 USB Host API documentation warns that USB-OTG TinyUSB mode and USB CDC on boot can conflict when assigned to the same PHY. Plan around the selected mode, framework settings, and the board’s actual routing rather than assuming both functions can operate simultaneously through one connector.

Espressif documents HID and mass-storage host/device examples in its USB FAQ. Its ESP-IDF v6.0 USB Device Stack guide also documents device applications, including a TinyUSB MIDI example. Those are framework-specific examples, not a guarantee that every USB class is supported in every environment.

Raspberry Pi Pico: a direct port and a simple bootloader path

The Pico routes RP2040 USB to its standard micro-USB connector. Its datasheet describes the board’s required external 27-ohm resistors and notes that the port can serve application USB or access the ROM USB bootloader in BOOTSEL mode. Raspberry Pi also lists drag-and-drop programming over USB mass storage in its RP2040 specifications.

That convenient connector and programming path do not by themselves make the board a powered USB host. For host use, check the particular board’s connector wiring, VBUS supply, and any hardware needed to power the peripheral. Do not assume every Pico-family board provides the same host-power arrangement.

Board power and wiring can decide a host project

USB host capability in a chip is only one part of a working host port. A bus-powered keyboard, storage device, or other peripheral needs VBUS from the host board within suitable limits. Espressif’s ESP32-S3-USB-OTG User Guide shows one concrete implementation: the board maps host and device interfaces, supports selectable host-interface power sources, and includes a 500 mA current-limiting circuit. This is a detail of that board, not a universal ESP32-S3 guarantee.

Before choosing either platform for host work, inspect the exact board revision and its documentation for the connector, USB data routing, VBUS source, power-switch behavior, and supply limits. If the board does not include the required host power circuit, account for the external circuitry and wiring in the design.

How to choose for your USB project

  • Choose by role and USB class: confirm the framework and library you plan to use support your target host or device class. Espressif documents several examples, but the cited Raspberry Pi pages establish capability rather than a detailed class-by-class software matrix.
  • For a bus-powered host peripheral: prioritize the exact board’s VBUS power circuit and connector wiring over the chip’s OTG label.
  • For ESP32-S3 USB debugging or serial: account for the shared PHY before enabling OTG and USB CDC/Serial-JTAG functions together.
  • For a Pico programming workflow: consider whether the micro-USB connector and BOOTSEL mass-storage bootloader suit your development process.
  • For wireless requirements: compare the specific board models separately; USB capability alone does not determine whether integrated wireless features fit the project.
  • For demanding data transfer: test with the intended device and software stack. The available specifications do not establish a universal speed or reliability advantage for either platform.

There is no universal USB winner. ESP32-S3 offers a useful combination of OTG and USB-Serial/JTAG, subject to the shared-PHY constraint; Pico offers RP2040 host/device USB and a straightforward micro-USB bootloader path. The practical choice hinges on the intended role and class, host power needs, board wiring, and development workflow.
