For supported modern phones, eSIM is usually more convenient for switching because activation and transfer happen digitally. A physical SIM is the more dependable fallback when both phones have compatible trays: remove the card, insert it into the other phone, and continue using your line. Neither option wins in every situation. The right choice depends on the exact phone models, carrier, operating-system versions, country, and whether the new device has a SIM tray.

Same-platform moves, such as iPhone to iPhone or Galaxy to Galaxy, are generally simpler than iPhone-to-Android or Android-to-iPhone transfers. Before you erase an old eSIM, verify that the new phone can make a call and use mobile data.

eSIM and physical SIM: what actually changes when you switch

A physical SIM is a removable subscriber identity module. Your carrier account and telephone number are associated with the SIM profile, and the card can be moved between compatible, unlocked phones. You normally open the SIM tray, place the card in the correct orientation, and close the tray again.

An eSIM is a carrier profile stored in an embedded eUICC chip inside the phone. There is no card to remove. The profile is downloaded through a supported transfer feature, carrier app, QR code, carrier link, or manual activation details. Because the profile is tied to the device hardware, it cannot simply be exported from one phone’s eUICC to another as a file.

That distinction creates the practical trade-off:

  • eSIM: less handling, remote activation, and the possibility of storing multiple carrier plans on a supported device.
  • Physical SIM: a fast, independent fallback when a compatible tray is available, even if the old phone is damaged or the carrier’s digital transfer flow is unavailable.

Switching phones does not automatically mean switching carriers. A phone can be moved to a new device while remaining on the same carrier, or the line can be ported to a different carrier during the move. Carrier approval, device compatibility, account security checks, and country-specific rules apply to both methods.

Quick comparison for phone and carrier switches

Consideration eSIM Physical SIM
Basic transfer method Digital transfer, carrier app or link, QR code, or manual activation Remove the card and insert it into another compatible phone
Same-platform move Often quick when the carrier and both devices support the platform’s transfer feature Usually immediate after insertion, provided the tray, SIM size, and carrier profile are compatible
Cross-platform move Less universal; may require carrier activation, a QR code, an app, or manual entry Usually straightforward if both phones accept the same physical SIM and are unlocked
Carrier change Can be activated remotely, but the new carrier must support the phone, country, and activation method Insert the new carrier’s SIM; a new card is required unless the carrier supports another method
Need for a SIM tray No Yes, and the tray must accept the card’s size
Use with older or imported phones Availability varies considerably by model and market Often more flexible when the devices have compatible trays and network bands
Lost-phone recovery Cannot be physically removed from the lost device, but replacement activation still depends on the carrier The card can be moved to a spare phone, but anyone who obtains it may be able to use it in another device
Security exposure Harder to extract physically; account takeover and number-porting risks remain Removable hardware can be taken and inserted elsewhere

When eSIM is the better choice

You are moving between supported phones on the same platform

Same-platform transfers are where eSIM is most convenient. Eligible iPhones can use Apple’s Quick Transfer process to move a cellular plan from one iPhone to another during setup. Supported Android phones may transfer a physical SIM or eSIM to an eSIM on the new phone while data is being transferred. Samsung exposes a Transfer SIM from another phone option in SIM Manager on supported Galaxy models.

These features are conditional, not universal. The carrier must participate, both phones must meet the platform’s requirements, and the operating-system versions and country can affect availability. If the transfer prompt does not appear, use the carrier’s alternate activation route rather than repeatedly deleting and recreating the profile.

You want activation without waiting for a physical card

An eSIM can be provisioned while you are connected to Wi-Fi, which is useful when a carrier supplies a QR code, an activation link, or an app. This can avoid mailing a replacement SIM or finding a retail location. It is particularly useful when changing carriers while traveling, provided the plan is offered for your country and the phone is compatible and unlocked.

Your phone has no SIM tray

Some current phones are sold without a physical-SIM slot in particular markets. GSMA’s 2026 report identifies the US versions of Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL, introduced in August 2025, as eSIM-only. A buyer in one of those markets cannot rely on moving a card from an old phone; the carrier must support eSIM activation on the new model.

You need more than one stored plan

Many eSIM-capable phones let you store multiple carrier profiles, although the number that can be stored and the number that can be active simultaneously vary by device. This can simplify travel or keeping a second line, but storing a profile is not the same as having both lines active. Check the exact model’s SIM manager and the carrier’s terms before assuming dual-line service will work.

When a physical SIM is the better choice

You regularly move service between test, backup, or older phones

A physical card is independent of the old phone’s software and battery. If both devices are unlocked, have compatible trays, accept the same card size, and support the carrier’s network, you can normally move the card in seconds. This is often simpler for imported models or devices that do not share a common eSIM transfer system.

The old phone is unavailable or its screen is broken

Many eSIM transfer procedures require the old phone to be powered on, nearby, unlocked, and able to approve the move. A physical SIM does not need that handoff: remove it from the old device and place it in the spare phone. You may still need the carrier to re-register the line if the card is damaged or the new phone triggers an account check.

You want a tangible fallback

Keeping a physical SIM can be reassuring if your carrier’s eSIM activation is unreliable in your region. The limitation is that the fallback disappears on an eSIM-only model. Verify the regional specification before buying a phone if removable-SIM portability is important to you.

How to move a physical SIM to another phone

  1. Check compatibility first. Confirm that the new phone is unlocked, has a physical SIM tray, accepts the card’s size, and supports the carrier’s network. A tray that looks similar may still use a different card format or be disabled for a particular regional model.
  2. Power down both phones if the manufacturer instructs you to. This reduces the chance of the phone misreading the card while it is being removed.
  3. Locate the tray. It is usually on the phone’s edge. Do not confuse the SIM-tray hole with a microphone opening.
  4. Insert a SIM-eject tool into the tray hole. Press straight in with light, steady pressure until the tray releases. A suitable eject tool is preferable to a sharp improvised object that could damage the opening.
  5. Remove the card and note its orientation. The clipped corner and metal contacts must align with the tray’s markings. Avoid touching the contacts.
  6. Place the card in the new phone’s tray and reinsert it fully. The tray should sit flush; never force it.
  7. Turn on the new phone and wait for registration. Confirm that the carrier name appears, then place a call and test mobile data. If prompted, enter the SIM PIN.
  8. Keep the old phone available until testing is complete. If the new device does not register, return the card to the old phone or contact the carrier while you still have access to account details and Wi-Fi.

Apple’s current guidance describes the same basic sequence: insert the eject tool, remove the tray, place the SIM in the correct orientation, and reinsert the tray. The card’s portability is practical only when the replacement phone has a compatible tray and accepts the carrier’s profile.

How to transfer an eSIM

iPhone to iPhone

  1. Start setup on the new iPhone and connect it to Wi-Fi.
  2. When the cellular transfer option appears, choose the line you want to move and follow the on-screen approval prompts on the old iPhone.
  3. Keep both phones nearby and unlocked while the transfer completes. The old line normally stops working when activation on the new phone succeeds.
  4. Make a call and test mobile data on the new iPhone before erasing the old one.

Apple calls this Quick Transfer on eligible devices and carriers. If it is not offered, Apple also documents carrier links, carrier apps, QR codes, and manual entry as alternate methods. A physical SIM can be converted to an eSIM on a supported iPhone model when the carrier supports that conversion.

Android to a new Android phone

  1. During setup of the new phone, connect to Wi-Fi and choose the option to transfer a SIM or mobile plan when it is shown.
  2. Follow the prompts to move the physical SIM or eSIM to the new phone’s eSIM. Google states that this can occur while data is transferred from another device when the required carrier and device conditions are met.
  3. On a supported Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager, choose Transfer SIM from another phone, and follow the displayed instructions.
  4. After activation, call a known number and test mobile data. Only then remove the old phone from your account or reset it.

Menus can differ by model, Android version, carrier, and country. If the transfer control is missing, do not assume the phone lacks eSIM hardware; check the model’s regional specification and use the carrier’s activation process.

iPhone to Android or Android to iPhone

Cross-platform eSIM transfer is less standardized. The old and new operating systems may not support a direct handoff, even when both phones have eSIM hardware. Contact the carrier before starting and ask which of these methods it supports for your exact models:

  • a carrier-initiated transfer or reissue;
  • a QR code scanned on the new phone;
  • activation in the carrier’s app;
  • manual entry of an activation address and confirmation code.

Keep the old phone active until the new profile is working. If the carrier issues a replacement eSIM, the old profile may be disabled, so do not erase it until you have completed a call and a data test on the new device.

  • the exact phone model and regional variant are supported;
  • the phone is unlocked or can be unlocked;
  • eSIM activation is available in your country and on the selected plan;
  • the carrier can provide the required app, link, QR code, or manual activation details.

Install the new profile, select it for calls and mobile data, and test service before cancelling the old plan. If you are porting your number, the transfer may take longer than the eSIM download itself; follow the carrier’s instructions for account number, transfer PIN, and identity verification.

With a physical SIM

Obtain the new carrier’s SIM, complete any number-porting or identity checks, and insert the card after the carrier says the line is ready. A physical SIM does not bypass carrier requirements: the phone still has to be unlocked, compatible with the network, and approved for the country where it is used.

If the new phone has no SIM slot, the physical-card route is unavailable even if the carrier sells physical SIMs. In that case, request an eSIM for the exact device.

What to do before deleting an old eSIM

  • Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi and keep both phones charged.
  • Confirm the new phone shows the intended line and carrier.
  • Place an outgoing call and receive a call if possible.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and load a webpage or use another data service.
  • Verify text messaging and any two-factor authentication that uses the number.
  • Save the carrier’s support number and account credentials somewhere other than the old phone.
  • Only after those checks, erase the old phone or remove its eSIM profile.

Deleting an eSIM removes the profile from that device; it does not cancel the carrier account. A deleted profile usually must be reissued by the carrier, so treat deletion as a final step rather than a troubleshooting shortcut.

Troubleshooting failed transfers

The transfer option does not appear

Check that both phones run supported software, are near each other, are connected to Wi-Fi, and are signed in as required by the platform. Confirm that the carrier supports the feature for your country and plan. If any condition is missing, request a QR code, carrier-app activation, or manual setup.

The new phone says “No SIM” or has no service

For a physical SIM, power down, reseat the card, inspect it for damage, and confirm that the tray is fully closed. For an eSIM, verify that the profile finished downloading and that the line is enabled in the phone’s SIM settings. If the phone remains unregistered, contact the carrier and provide the exact model, IMEI or EID when requested.

The old phone stopped working before the new one activated

Do not keep deleting profiles or retrying random QR codes. Connect the new phone to Wi-Fi and contact the carrier for a replacement activation. A carrier may need to cancel the pending transfer and issue a fresh eSIM or physical SIM.

Calls work but mobile data does not

Check which line is selected for mobile data, turn cellular data off and on, and confirm roaming or APN settings if the carrier requires them. Test again away from Wi-Fi. Persistent data failure normally requires carrier-side provisioning rather than a different physical-versus-eSIM choice.

Security, privacy, and loss scenarios

A physical SIM can be removed and inserted into another phone by anyone who obtains it. A device PIN does not protect a card that is physically taken out, so use the SIM PIN feature if your carrier supports it and keep the card secure when it is not installed.

An eSIM profile cannot simply be exported from one eUICC to another, which reduces the risk of someone taking a card and immediately using it elsewhere. It does not make the telephone number immune to takeover. Phishing, compromised carrier accounts, weak account recovery, and fraudulent number-porting requests can affect either SIM type. Use a strong carrier-account password, carrier port-out protections where offered, and independent recovery methods.

If a phone is lost, contact the carrier promptly to suspend service and issue a replacement eSIM or physical SIM. A physical card may let you restore service quickly in a spare phone, while an eSIM-only phone depends entirely on the carrier’s reactivation process and your ability to pass its account checks.

A practical decision framework

Choose eSIM when all of these are true

  • Both phones support eSIM and the relevant transfer method.
  • Your carrier supports that method for your country and plan.
  • You can keep the old phone powered on and connected during transfer.
  • You value remote activation, multiple stored plans, or a phone without a SIM tray.

Choose physical SIM when all of these are true

  • Both phones have compatible trays and accept the same SIM size.
  • You often swap among older, imported, backup, or test devices.
  • You may need to move service when the old phone is damaged or unavailable.
  • You accept the additional risk of a removable card being taken and used elsewhere.

Pause and verify before buying the new phone

  • The exact regional model, not just the product family, has the SIM options you need.
  • The carrier supports the device’s network bands and activation method.
  • The phone is unlocked or eligible to be unlocked.
  • A replacement path exists if the first transfer fails.

Bottom line: which is better?

For a supported same-platform upgrade, eSIM is usually the easiest option: no tray tool, no card handling, and activation can happen during setup. For frequent swapping, older phones, imported devices, or an emergency spare, a physical SIM is usually more predictable when both phones have compatible trays. Cross-platform moves and carrier changes are conditional for either method, so check the exact carrier, country, model, and software requirements before you start.
