Short answer: no documented Escape from Tarkov mechanic shows that carrying or using the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit broadcasts your PMC’s coordinates. “GPS Tracker” is an unverified nickname, not a separately confirmed item name. Identify the exact label in your client before applying any advice, because a different item could have different rules.

What players usually mean by “GPS tracker”

The phrase GPS Tracker is ambiguous in Tarkov. The documented GPS-related object is the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit, commonly shortened by players to GPSA or GPS amplifier. The shorter “GPS Tracker” wording is not independently verified as the item’s official client name.

Before searching a map, changing your loadout, or assuming that enemies can see you, open the object’s inspection panel and copy its complete in-game name. Check the stash, loot panel, barter screen, or quest objective rather than relying on a nickname remembered from another game or an older guide.

Term What is established What is not established
Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit A documented Electronics item associated with Lightkeeper progression and the quest Following the Bread Crumbs. That it automatically tracks a player, transmits coordinates, or gives enemies a marker.
“GPS Tracker” A shorthand players may use when asking about the GPSA. That it is a separate official item in the current client.
MS2000 A marker used to mark supplies or vehicles in the situations that require it. That it has GPS functionality or is interchangeable with GPSA.
External quest-tracking service A separate web or app service can track your checklist or item progress. That it changes Battlestate’s spawn, handover, or position-disclosure logic.

Does the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier reveal your position?

No item or quest documentation establishes a position-disclosure mechanic for the amplifier. There is no documented activation button, signal radius, map marker, enemy notification, or detection chance tied to carrying it. The evidence therefore supports a precise conclusion: the claim that GPSA reveals your PMC’s location is unverified.

That conclusion is narrower than saying the item can never have such a feature. Tarkov can change between patches, and an undocumented or newly introduced mechanic would require confirmation in the current client. Until the game itself describes one, do not treat stealth advice such as crouching, dropping the amplifier, switching it off, hiding it in a secure container, or equipping a jammer as tested countermeasures.

Other PMCs cannot be assumed to receive your coordinates merely because the unit is in your inventory. Carrying a GPSA may still expose you to ordinary risks—gunfire, sound, line of sight, extraction routes, or a quest objective that takes you into a contested area—but those are normal raid risks, not evidence of GPS tracking.

What the item actually is

The Official Escape from Tarkov Wiki describes the unit as A configurable low noise GPS amplifier module with pre-filtering and wide input voltage range. In the game’s inventory taxonomy, it is an electronics object rather than a wearable locator or a player-tracking device.

Property Documented value Practical meaning
Item name Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit Use this exact label when checking quests, barter menus, and handover requirements.
Type Electronics It is categorized as an item for inventory and quest systems, not as a live radar or marker.
Weight 0.44 kg This is an inventory weight value; it says nothing about transmission or detection.
Grid size 1 × 1 The unit occupies one one-by-one stash slot.
Flea Market Cannot be listed Do not plan on selling it through the flea market or using a flea listing as a price check.
Secure container Cannot be placed in a secure container This restriction is an inventory rule, not proof that the item is broadcasting your location.

None of these properties supplies a signal radius, coordinate feed, map icon, or notification rule. Treat the inventory restrictions as game-design and quest-progression rules only. The 0.44 kg weight can matter when you are deciding what to carry out, but it does not indicate that the amplifier is active, powered, or detectable by nearby players.

How the GPSA fits into quests and progression

Following the Bread Crumbs

The amplifier is associated with the Lightkeeper quest chain and the quest Following the Bread Crumbs. Quest documentation lists one unit as a reward. If your objective text does not mention the amplifier, do not assume that a similarly named electronic item will satisfy the handover.

Mechanic barter

A community-maintained quest reference associates the amplifier’s barter with Mechanic loyalty level 4. This is patch-sensitive information: the required loyalty level, barter ingredients, availability, or quest dependency can change. If the barter is absent, verify your current Mechanic level and quest state in the client before repeating raids.

There is no reliable universal price to quote for the unit because it cannot be listed on the flea market, and the exact barter contents can change. Do not substitute a remembered ruble value for the current trader screen. The client’s barter entry, if unlocked, is the authority for what the exchange currently requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quest item versus ordinary equipment

The GPSA’s quest association does not turn it into a live piece of tracking equipment. A quest item can have restrictions on spawning, storage, trading, or handover without revealing its carrier to other PMCs. Keep the quest role and the supposed stealth effect as separate questions.

GPSA, MS2000, and external trackers are not the same thing

Confusion often comes from grouping every electronic-looking object under “GPS.” Compare the exact name and function instead of the shape, icon, or a teammate’s shorthand.

Object Documented role Can you treat it as a player locator?
Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit Electronics item tied to Lightkeeper progression and Following the Bread Crumbs. No documented coordinate broadcast, marker, radius, or enemy alert.
MS2000 Marker used for supplies or vehicles in objectives that call for it. No; a secondary explanation specifically says it does not have GPS functionality.
External quest-tracking website or app Personal checklist and item-progress management outside the game. No; it does not change Battlestate’s item logic or tell opponents where you are.

If a quest or video uses “GPS tracker” but shows an MS2000, a web service, or another item, stop and re-check the label. Advice for one object cannot be transferred to another merely because both are described with navigation or tracking language.

Safe identification and troubleshooting procedure

Use this sequence whenever a guide, teammate, or video calls something a “GPS tracker.” It prevents an item-name mistake from becoming a wasted raid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the complete client label. Open inspection and record the exact spelling. If the object is not Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit, stop applying GPSA-specific advice.
  2. Open the active quest. Look under objectives, required handover items, and rewards. For the documented chain, compare the client’s text with Following the Bread Crumbs.
  3. Check the raid mode. Quest documentation states: Quest items do not spawn in the practice game mode. An empty search in Practice is therefore expected for a quest item and does not, by itself, prove a bug.
  4. Check progression gates. Confirm Mechanic loyalty level 4 and any prerequisite quest state before searching for a barter. A missing barter can be a progression issue rather than a map-spawn issue.
  5. Verify the objective’s wording. A quest may require a particular item state, quantity, location, or handover action. A GPSA in your stash is not automatically the same as an item the objective currently accepts.
  6. Record what happened in the raid. Note the patch, map, mode, objective text, and whether the item was absent, refused during handover, or failed to update progress. These observations distinguish identity, spawn, and quest-state problems.
  7. Recheck after a patch. If the client changed since your last attempt, reread the current quest and trader screens. Do not rely on an old spawn claim or a remembered countermeasure.

What is documented, and what is only speculation?

Claim Status How to handle it
The unit is an Electronics item weighing 0.44 kg and occupying a 1 × 1 slot. Documented item properties. Use these values for inventory planning.
The unit is tied to Following the Bread Crumbs and Lightkeeper progression. Documented quest association. Check the current quest text for exact requirements.
Mechanic barter unlocks at loyalty level 4. Community-documented and patch-sensitive. Verify the level and barter in your current client.
Carrying the amplifier broadcasts coordinates. Unverified. Do not present it as a game mechanic.
The amplifier has a signal radius or detection percentage. Not established. Do not invent a range, chance, or timing.
Enemies receive a map marker or notification. Not established. Assume ordinary raid visibility rules, not GPS warnings.
Crouching, dropping it, turning it off, or using a jammer prevents tracking. Not documented for this item. Do not waste a loadout slot or change tactics on that assumption.
The unit has a guaranteed Labs room, container, or spawn rate. Not established in current documentation. Avoid treating any specific location as guaranteed.

“Not established” does not mean “proven impossible.” It means there is no reliable mechanic description to use as a factual guide. A future patch could add behavior, but that would need fresh confirmation.

Common failure cases and the correct response

You searched in Practice and found nothing

Practice mode is the first thing to check. Quest items do not spawn there, so an empty result is normal for a quest search. Switch to the appropriate live raid mode only after confirming that the quest is active and the item name is correct.

The Mechanic barter is missing

Check Mechanic’s displayed loyalty level, prerequisite quests, and the current barter tab. The level-4 association is community-maintained and may be changed by a patch. Repeating raids before checking progression will not unlock a trader entry that your account has not qualified for.

The item is present but the handover is refused

Compare the complete item name and the objective’s required quantity. Confirm that you are viewing the active quest, not a completed or superseded step. Record whether the game rejects the item immediately or accepts it without updating progress; those are different failure modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The objective does not update after a raid

Write down the mode, map, extraction result, objective wording, and item state. Then check whether the quest expects a handover rather than simple possession. Avoid replacing the item with another “GPS” object unless the client explicitly names that object.

A guide promises a guaranteed Labs spawn

No authoritative current spawn room, container, or rate is established here. Treat a guaranteed-location claim as unverified unless the current game client or a current, clearly sourced update confirms it. The absence of a known spawn point is not evidence that the amplifier is secretly tracking you.

The object is called MS2000

MS2000 is a different marker. A secondary explanation describes it as a device for marking supplies or vehicles and specifically says it does not have GPS functionality. Do not substitute MS2000 for the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit in a quest or in a discussion about player-location disclosure.

An external tracker says your item is missing

A checklist service can be useful for recording objectives, but it is separate from the game client. Compare its entry with the current quest and stash screens. It cannot create a spawn, unlock Mechanic, repair a refused handover, or confirm that an item broadcasts coordinates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why stealth countermeasures are the wrong starting point

Players often ask whether they should hide the unit, leave it in a backpack, avoid sprinting, activate a jammer, or put it in a secure container. None of those actions is documented as a GPSA countermeasure, and the unit cannot be placed in a secure container in the first place.

The useful order of operations is instead:

  • Confirm the exact item name in the client.
  • Confirm that the relevant quest is active and names that item.
  • Confirm that you are not searching in Practice mode.
  • Confirm trader progression before looking for a barter.
  • Use normal cover, sound discipline, route planning, and extraction awareness for ordinary PMC threats.
  • Recheck patch notes or current in-client text if a new update explicitly introduces a signal or tracking mechanic.

This approach avoids turning an unverified rumor into a loadout rule. It also keeps ordinary stealth tactics focused on mechanics that actually govern survival in a raid.

A compact pre-raid decision checklist

Question If yes If no
Does inspection show “Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit”? Continue with GPSA-specific quest checks. Identify the other object before using this guide.
Does the active quest name the unit? Follow that objective’s quantity and handover wording. Do not assume the item belongs to your current task.
Are you in a live raid mode rather than Practice? Quest-item spawning is at least possible under the quest’s rules. Do not use the empty Practice result to diagnose a bug.
Is Mechanic at the required loyalty level? Inspect the current barter and prerequisites. Resolve progression first.
Does the client document a location-sharing effect? Follow the new, explicit mechanic description. Do not invent a signal radius or stealth countermeasure.

Patch-safe verification for future updates

Because trader requirements and quest text are patch-sensitive, use a repeatable verification habit whenever the game updates. First, compare the item’s full name and inspection text with your previous notes. Next, open the current quest and Mechanic screens and check whether the reward, barter level, ingredients, or handover wording changed. Finally, test only the behavior the client actually describes. A rumor that an item is “loud,” “visible,” or “trackable” is not a substitute for a stated mechanic.

When reporting a problem to teammates, include the build or patch, raid mode, map, quest name, exact item label, and the precise result. “GPS did not spawn” is too vague to diagnose; “Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit absent in a live raid while Following the Bread Crumbs was active” is actionable. This record also prevents an old guide from being mistaken for a current rule.

Bottom line for Tarkov players

Use the full name Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit when asking questions or checking a quest. It is a 0.44 kg, 1 × 1 Electronics item tied to Following the Bread Crumbs and Lightkeeper progression; community documentation associates its Mechanic barter with loyalty level 4. Quest items do not spawn in Practice mode.

Most importantly, no documented mechanic currently establishes that carrying or using the amplifier reveals your PMC’s position. Treat “GPS Tracker” as an ambiguous nickname, verify the client label and quest state, and do not rely on invented jammers, hiding tricks, signal ranges, or guaranteed spawn claims.

No. External services can track your checklist, but they do not change Battlestate’s spawn, trader, handover, or position-disclosure logic.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: identify the item as the Far-forward GPS Signal Amplifier Unit, verify the active quest and raid mode, and check Mechanic progression before troubleshooting a spawn or barter. No documented mechanic currently shows that carrying the GPSA reveals your PMC’s position.
