The European Space Agency (ESA) and French AI company Mistral have signed a Letter of Intent to explore cooperation on artificial intelligence for space. It sets out areas for discussion—not a completed deployment, a funded project list, or a delivery schedule.
What did ESA and Mistral agree to do?
ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and Mistral co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch signed the Letter of Intent in Paris on 16 September 2026. ESA announced it on 23 September. The agreement creates a strategic framework for exploring how Mistral’s models, cloud infrastructure, and technical capabilities might support ESA’s work.
The announcement identifies three areas for exploration:
- Earth observation and engineering: potential support for engineering activities and work with Earth-observation data.
- Advanced AI capabilities for space: ways AI could contribute to space-related technical work.
- Skills and knowledge development: making expertise and institutional knowledge easier to access and use.
Across these areas, the parties cite aims including automating repetitive tasks and supporting technical decisions that remain human-led. These are intended uses, not reported results.

How could AI be used in space work?
The announcement points to practical support for people working with complex engineering and scientific information: helping staff find relevant knowledge, reducing repetitive work, and assisting with technical analysis while leaving decisions under human control. For Earth observation, AI could be relevant to making satellite-derived information easier to work with, but the release does not describe a specific new service or mission deployment.
ESA and Mistral also say they will examine whether relevant capabilities could run on European infrastructure. The safeguards under consideration include security, resilience, traceability, auditability, and protection of sensitive information. The announcement does not establish that a particular infrastructure choice or safeguard has already been implemented.

Does this mean ESA is already using Mistral AI in missions?
No new operational use is confirmed in the announcement. The Letter of Intent is exploratory: it does not name a mission using Mistral models, specify a project approved for deployment, or provide a timetable, budget, or measurable performance results.
ESA describes the cooperation as building on two existing initiatives:
