Held October 8–9, 2022, at APGFCU Arena at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland, it brought makers, families, exhibitors and 3D-printing companies together for talks, demonstrations and project displays. Its memorable mix ranged from commercial printers to recycled-bottle filament, tracked combat robots and chocolate printing.
What is ERRF 22?
The East Coast RepRap Festival, or ERRF, is a maker gathering focused on 3D printing and the broader RepRap community. The 2022 edition was a return to an in-person event after the previous festival in 2019; it did not move online during the gap. Hackaday’s preview described a program of talks, exhibits and demonstrations, while Make characterized the gathering as part industry event, part hobbyist showcase and part family outing. Attendance reports differed. Make reported about 1,600 attendees, while Polymaker said more than 1,800 community members took part. Those are separate publisher counts, not a single reconciled total. (Make; Polymaker)
What projects were shown at ERRF 22?
The show floor made clear that desktop 3D printing was not just a contest between printer brands. Projects used the technology as a platform for mechanical experiments, material reuse, robotics and food fabrication. How does a conveyor-belt 3D printer work?
A conventional FDM printer lays down filament on a mostly stationary build surface. In a conveyor-belt design, the print surface moves, allowing completed objects to travel away from the active print area and making longer or successive prints possible. At ERRF, Adam Fasnacht demonstrated the idea using an Ender 3 modified with a belt. It was a hobbyist adaptation, not evidence that every Ender 3 can be converted with a simple drop-in part. How does Recreator 3D make PET-bottle filament?
Josh Taylor’s open-source Recreator 3D project processes discarded PET bottles into filament. The report describes the resulting filament as hollow, which affects print setup. Its cited project guidance recommends a nozzle temperature around 260 °C, a 70 °C bed, slower print speeds and extrusion increased to about 130%. These are reported settings from the project coverage, not independently tested or universal PET-printing settings. (Hackaday)

The MK5Kit can reuse core components from a low-cost Ender 3. LDO Motors was associated with a hoped-for future kit, not a confirmed availability claim. Anyone exploring bottle-to-filament recycling should treat the feedstock, processing method and resulting filament consistency as project-specific constraints rather than assuming it behaves like a spool of commercially produced material.
Which filament should I use for 3D printing?
ERRF 22 did not point to one best filament for every project. The right material depends on what the printer supports and what the object must do. A recycled-PET setup has different inputs and process constraints from a standard filament spool; food-printing hardware has separate material and food-contact considerations. The festival’s breadth is a useful reminder to choose filament for the printer, application and operating conditions—not simply by color or brand.

Why did ERRF 22 matter to the maker community?
The return offered a visible measure of community momentum after pandemic disruption had interrupted large gatherings. Hackaday’s Tom Nardi wrote that he had worried the shutdown might weaken the event, but described a lively floor of local hackers and makers eager to show their work. The event’s value was not only the machines on display: it gave hobbyists and companies a place to exchange ideas in person. (Hackaday)
The floor also reflected economic pressures. Hackaday observed hesitation among some vendors, connecting it with parts shortages and rising costs. The absence of the expected i3 MK4 reveal alongside a Prusa XL demonstration was one indication that the event was not simply a parade of polished product launches. ERRF’s distinctive appeal came from commercial exhibits sharing space with experiments that were still being refined. (Hackaday)
