Equinix’s “Tokyo data center expansion” refers to a plan announced on September 3, 2010—not a new 2026 project. The company said it would invest $9 million to add 140 cabinet equivalents at TY2, its second Tokyo International Business Exchange (IBX) data center, with completion scheduled for Q4 2010. Equinix said the work would bring its total Tokyo capacity to 1,600 cabinet equivalents. Those figures describe the announcement’s plan, not verified current inventory or confirmation that the project finished on schedule. Equinix’s September 2010 announcement is the primary source.
What Equinix announced in Tokyo
The project was an expansion of TY2, Equinix’s second IBX data center in Tokyo. In its 2010 release, Equinix described a $9 million investment and 140 additional cabinet equivalents. The company scheduled completion for Q4 2010 and said the addition would take total Tokyo capacity to 1,600 cabinet equivalents. These were announcement-era plans and figures published by Equinix; they do not establish present-day capacity or availability.
TY2 expansion at a glance
| Measure | What Equinix stated in 2010 |
|---|---|
| Facility | TY2, Equinix’s second Tokyo IBX data center |
| Investment | $9 million |
| Planned addition | 140 cabinet equivalents |
| Scheduled completion | Q4 2010 |
| Planned total Tokyo capacity after the work | 1,600 cabinet equivalents |
All figures in the table come from Equinix’s 2010 announcement. “Scheduled for completion” is not the same as independently verified completion.
Why Equinix said it was adding capacity
Equinix attributed the expansion to demand from cloud and IT service providers, content companies, and financial firms doing business in Japan. The release did not provide an independent market-size measure; the demand explanation is the company’s account at the time.

Equinix also said TY1 and TY2 were connected directly by fiber. Its 2010 announcement described more than 50 international and domestic carriers and networks in Tokyo, and said the top three internet exchanges in Japan—including Equinix Exchange—were present in its Tokyo IBX facilities. Those statements describe the ecosystem Equinix reported in 2010, not a current count.
The same release said Tokyo Financial Exchanges Inc. and Tokyo Commodity Exchange had selected Equinix as a preferred data-center colocation provider. That is a historical statement by Equinix; it should not be read as confirmation of a present-day designation.

How the 2010 TY2 plan fits into later Tokyo developments
Equinix announced other Tokyo projects in later years. They involved different facilities, dates, and capacity measures, so their figures should not be treated as additions to TY2 or compared as though cabinets and megawatts measure the same thing.
| Project | Date and status in the cited announcement | Investment | Capacity stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| TY2 | 2010 expansion plan; Q4 2010 completion was scheduled | $9 million | 140 cabinet equivalents planned; 1,600 cabinet equivalents in total Tokyo capacity after the planned work |
| TY5 | 2016 second expansion phase | US$43 million reported total investment | 375 cabinets added, bringing TY5 to 725 cabinets |
| TY15 | Announced in 2022; first phase was scheduled for H2 2024 | $115 million initial investment | Approximately 1,200 cabinets in phase one and 3,700 at full build-out, as stated at announcement |
| TY13x | Second Tokyo xScale facility; Equinix announced its opening in 2023 | Not stated in the cited 2023 announcement | 8 MW in phase one; 36 MW at full build |
The TY5 figures are from Equinix’s 2016 TY5 announcement; TY15 figures and its planned schedule are from the 2022 TY15 announcement; and TY13x’s status and power figures are from the 2023 TY13x announcement. TY15’s stated schedule and capacities were plans when announced, not evidence of present availability.

Does this mean Equinix is expanding in Tokyo now?
No current Tokyo construction announcement is established by these sources. Equinix’s expansion timeline lists OS5x, a new xScale facility in Osaka, Japan, for Q1 2027. The same company page lists Silicon Valley SV18 and Madrid MD5 as opened in Q2 2026. The timeline is company-reported and may change; Osaka is not Tokyo.

The 2010 release documents Equinix’s stated response to customer demand and its reported Tokyo connectivity ecosystem at that time. It does not establish current cabinet availability, pricing, service terms, or the status of the exchanges, carriers, and customer designations mentioned in the release. Organizations assessing colocation or interconnection in Tokyo should seek current facility and service information directly rather than use the 2010 capacity figures as a procurement basis.
