On April 11, 2013, Equinix announced that CME Group was establishing a European CME Globex hub at Equinix’s LD4/LD5 data-center campus in Slough, near London. The hub was scheduled to open in May 2013; the announcement and later sources cited here do not confirm that it opened on schedule or establish whether it remains in operation.

What did Equinix and CME Group announce?

Equinix said CME Group would establish a European hub for CME Globex inside its LD4/LD5 campus. The companies framed the move as a way to bring CME closer to European trading platforms and electronic trading customers, and to align its infrastructure with regional customers. The announcement described plans and expected benefits, not independently verified outcomes.

Equinix’s April 2013 release reported that approximately 25% of CME Group’s electronic trading volume came from outside the United States, primarily from EMEA. That is a historical, company-reported figure—not a current measure of CME trading activity. Equinix’s April 11, 2013 announcement is the primary account; Data Center Knowledge’s April 12, 2013 report contemporaneously corroborated the campus, schedule, and connection options.

What is CME Globex, and where are LD4/LD5?

CME Globex is CME Group’s electronic trading platform. In the 2013 announcement, Equinix described LD4/LD5 as its data-center campus in Slough, near London. The proposed hub would place CME’s platform infrastructure within that colocation and interconnection environment; it was not a consumer service or a device users would install at home.

For present-day location and service context, Equinix’s London data-center page describes its London facilities and services. That current company page does not establish the status of CME’s specific 2013 hub.

Why did CME Group choose Equinix in London?

The stated business rationale was proximity to European customers and trading participants, together with access to a data-center community where financial firms and other potential customers were already present. CME’s managing director for EMEA, William Knottenbelt, said the company saw growing demand from customers based throughout Europe and wanted to build its regional infrastructure and technology capabilities. He described the intended benefits as improved cost and technology management efficiencies and accelerated access to CME markets.

Equinix’s Stewart Orrell presented the hub as a way for an exchange to reach a concentrated trading community using data centers populated with target customers. That was Equinix’s own commercial positioning, not independent evidence that it was uniquely able to meet exchanges’ needs.

How could customers connect to the CME Globex hub?

Equinix’s release described two routes for interested customers. It did not specify pricing, latency, service-level terms, or whether either route is available today.

Route described in 2013 What it involved
Physical presence Acquire space in the LD4/LD5 campus and cross-connect to the CME Globex platform.
Remote line access Lease a line to connect to the platform without the release specifying that the customer had to acquire campus space.

These options illustrate the enterprise infrastructure model behind the announcement: colocation and network connectivity for organizations, rather than direct consumer equipment or ordinary home internet access.

How does the announcement fit Equinix’s later UK expansion?

Equinix’s later UK investment announcements provide broader context for the growth of its regional infrastructure, but they do not confirm what happened to CME’s particular LD4/LD5 hub.

  • In November 2018, Equinix announced plans for LD7 at its London Slough campus. The company described a planned $120 million facility, with 1,750 cabinets in its initial phase and capacity for up to 2,650 at full build. Those were announcement figures and plans, not proof here of completed capacity. Equinix also described a $387 million investment across multiple UK projects in 2018/19. Equinix’s November 19, 2018 release sets out those plans.
  • In November 2022, Equinix reported £179 million in UK investments involving London expansions at LD7 and LD8 and the opening of MA5 in Manchester. It also said its combined London and Manchester ecosystem included more than 1,500 companies: 250+ networks, 460+ cloud and IT service providers, 350+ financial-services firms, and 100+ content and digital-media businesses. Those figures describe the combined UK ecosystem in that release, not LD4/LD5 alone. The same release cited a 43% compound annual growth rate by 2025 as a forecast for London interconnection bandwidth, not an achieved result. Equinix’s November 23, 2022 release provides that context.

Did the CME Globex hub open in 2013?

The available sources establish that Equinix announced the hub and said it was scheduled to open in May 2013. The contemporaneous report repeats the planned timing, but neither that report nor the later Equinix UK investment announcements cited above verify that the hub opened as scheduled. They also do not establish whether CME’s specific LD4/LD5 hub remains in operation. Equinix’s later expansion in Slough is not proof of the hub’s subsequent status.
