Equinix opened its LA4 data center in El Segundo, California, on August 27, 2009. It was the company’s fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) facility in the Los Angeles area. The opening was a historical event, not a new 2026 launch.

What Equinix announced when LA4 opened

In its August 27, 2009 announcement, Equinix described LA4 as a facility near its existing LA3 site in El Segundo. The company announced a planned 177,000-square-foot data center, with capacity for approximately 3,000 cabinets at full build-out.

The $95 million first phase opened that day. Equinix said it supported 800 cabinets and included more than 10,000 square feet of IBXflex space—office space located in the same data center as customers’ equipment. Those are figures from the 2009 announcement, not confirmation of current deployed capacity or availability.

Why Equinix said it built LA4

Equinix framed the expansion around demand from entertainment and digital-media companies for colocation and network-exchange services. The company said connectivity could help those businesses deliver content to end users; that was Equinix’s stated rationale, not an independently verified performance result.

Equinix said its IBXLink redundant fiber connections would let customers connect across the four centers as if they were in one building. It said the new facility would provide access to more than 60 carriers and network service providers operating in its existing Los Angeles centers. These connectivity and carrier claims describe the company’s 2009 announcement.

Where LA4 is and what Equinix lists today

Equinix’s current LA4 facility page lists the address as 445 N Douglas St, El Segundo, CA 90245, and 77,263 square feet of colocation space. It also lists N+1 redundancy for power, generators, and cooling, and a minimum cabinet density of 6 kVA.

The current 77,263-square-foot listing and the 2009 announcement’s planned 177,000-square-foot full-build figure should not be treated as directly equivalent measurements. The sources do not establish whether they use different space definitions or reflect different development states, so they do not support a claim that the facility shrank or that the earlier figure was wrong.

Equinix’s Los Angeles data centers page currently lists LA1, LA3, LA4, and LA7. The company describes the metro as offering colocation, interconnection, cloud on-ramps, and access to subsea cables.

What the public figures do—and do not—tell you

Equinix’s 2025 Form 10-K reports 280 data centers across 77 markets after openings and acquisitions during 2025. It says expansion decisions can depend on demand, power availability, access to networks and cloud partners, and investment requirements. That is company-wide context; it does not establish LA4’s current available capacity or explain the specific site-selection decision in 2009.

The cited public information does not establish LA4’s current occupancy, customer pricing, available cabinets, or actual deployed capacity. The 2009 release also warned that forward-looking statements might not match actual results. For a present-day capacity or pricing decision, the historical opening figures and public facility listing are not substitutes for current availability information from Equinix.
