MetaHuman Creator is Epic Games’ tool for building detailed, rigged digital characters for Unreal Engine. It began as a cloud-based browser app and is now integrated into Unreal Engine from version 5.6. Epic describes its characters as high-fidelity, but its product materials do not establish that they reliably avoid the uncanny valley—a subjective viewer reaction, not a feature the tool can guarantee.
What is MetaHuman Creator?
MetaHuman Creator is Epic Games’ character-creation tool for making digital humans that can be used in Unreal Engine productions. Its design combines starting-point presets with controls for shaping and customizing a character’s appearance, including facial features, hair, eyes, teeth, and skin.
When Epic announced the tool on February 10, 2021, it described a cloud application that ran in a browser through Unreal Engine Pixel Streaming. Users selected and blended preset faces, adjusted features, and chose hair, clothing, and body proportions. Epic’s announcement listed 18 differently proportioned body types. It also said the process could take “weeks or months to less than an hour”; that was Epic’s claim, not a published controlled time study.
What changed: the current in-engine workflow
Epic’s documentation says MetaHuman Creator is fully integrated into Unreal Engine beginning with UE 5.6. The current documented process takes place in the Unreal Editor rather than the original web app.

- Install Unreal Engine with MetaHuman Creator Core Data. Use Epic’s current MetaHuman documentation for the supported setup.
- Enable the MetaHuman Creator plugin. The plugin provides the Creator tools in the editor.
- Create a MetaHuman character asset and open it in the editor.
- Assemble and customize the character through the UE Cine pipeline. Use presets as a starting point, then adjust appearance to suit the character and production.
Epic’s documentation distinguishes older projects: MetaHumans for UE 5.5 and earlier should continue to be created and edited in the web application. Epic’s web-app notice advises legacy users to export or migrate their characters. It says account characters will be deleted after the additional 90-day retrieval window. Follow the latest instructions in Epic’s MetaHuman notice before relying on the closure schedule or leaving characters in the old service.

What can you do with a MetaHuman?
Epic presented MetaHumans as assets for animation and motion-capture workflows, not merely as still portraits. In its 2021 announcement, the company said downloaded characters were fully rigged and included levels of detail (LODs). It also described Maya source data containing meshes, skeleton, facial rig, animation controls, and materials. Epic said hair used strand-based rendering, with hair cards available for lower-end platforms, and that animations made for one MetaHuman could run on other MetaHumans. These are capabilities described in the announcement; suitability for a particular project depends on its pipeline and performance needs.
Epic’s MetaHuman page also describes Mesh to MetaHuman and customization tools, and notes that MetaHumans and compatible assets such as clothing and grooms are available on Fab, either free or at a cost. Availability and terms can vary by asset; check the listing. See Epic’s MetaHuman page.

Does MetaHuman Creator avoid the uncanny valley?
There is no safe basis for treating “avoids the uncanny valley” as a guaranteed result. Epic’s official materials describe high-fidelity digital humans and their creation tools, but they do not provide controlled evidence or a viewer-response measure showing that MetaHumans avoid discomfort or appear convincing to every audience.
The uncanny valley is a response to a character that looks nearly human but still feels subtly wrong. A detailed model alone cannot settle that judgment: appearance, movement, facial animation, lighting, camera framing, and the scene all contribute to what viewers perceive. MetaHuman Creator gives artists tools for making realistic-looking characters; whether a finished character feels natural is a result to evaluate in context, not an automatic property of the software.

What happens to characters made with the web app?
Epic’s current notice says the older web application is scheduled to close on November 5, 2026, and that users will have a further 90 days to retrieve characters. It recommends exporting through Quixel Bridge or migrating characters to the in-engine Creator. After the retrieval period, remaining account characters will be deleted, according to the notice. Because this schedule can change, consult Epic’s notice and follow its latest export or migration directions before the deadline.
