The effective way to limit an AI attack agent is to contain it at several independent control points: give every agent a unique, accountable identity; authorize only the task, tools, data and time it needs; require fresh approval for high-impact actions; restrict its network routes with deny-by-default firewall and segmentation rules; isolate its runtime; and capture enough telemetry to revoke access quickly. A firewall alone cannot correct an over-privileged identity, and an identity policy cannot stop an already-compromised process from probing reachable services.

What an enterprise control design must achieve

An autonomous or semi-autonomous agent can chain API calls, use credentials, invoke plugins and act faster than a human reviewer. The security objective is therefore not simply to block a known malicious prompt. It is to limit what the agent can do if its model is manipulated, a connector is compromised, a token is stolen, or a legitimate instruction is interpreted too broadly.

Use five containment objectives:

  • Accountability: every agent, plugin and callable tool maps to a distinct owner, purpose and identity.
  • Least privilege: the effective permission set is limited to the current task, approved data and required operations.
  • Bounded reach: network routes, tenants, APIs and runtime capabilities are explicitly allowed rather than implicitly available.
  • Human control: irreversible or high-impact actions pause for approval, and operators can stop execution.
  • Evidence and recovery: identity, policy, tool-call and output events support detection, investigation and rapid revocation.

Microsoft summarizes the identity principle as: “Every user, agent, plugin, and callable tool receives a verified identity, explicit authorization, and the minimum rights required.” Treat that as an engineering requirement, not a slogan.

Give every agent a distinct, managed identity

Use one identity per deployed agent

Do not copy a human administrator’s account into an agent and do not reuse one service account for unrelated agents. Create a dedicated managed or federated workload identity for each deployed agent, with a named owner or sponsor. The record should state its business purpose, approved data classes, tool dependencies, operating environment, expected lifetime and escalation contacts.

A separate identity makes an action attributable and lets responders disable one agent without interrupting every automation that shares a credential. It also prevents a stolen human session from becoming an unbounded machine identity.

Define agent-to-agent trust explicitly

Agent orchestration often creates an implicit trust chain: one agent calls another, which calls a data connector or deployment tool. Register each hop and define which caller may invoke which operation. A downstream agent must not inherit the upstream agent’s full permission set merely because it was called by a trusted component.

Set per-principal limits on query rate, request volume and concurrency. These limits reduce data scraping and resource-abuse opportunities even when a token remains technically valid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use short-lived, scoped credentials

Issue tokens for a narrow audience, operation and duration. Prefer workload identity federation or managed identity over long-lived secrets. Separate credentials for read, write and administrative actions where the platform permits it. Rotate signing keys and connector secrets, and test that token invalidation takes effect before an incident occurs.

Apply Conditional Access to agents and paired users

For deployed agents, require Microsoft Entra authentication at the agent endpoint. Conditional Access must cover both the agent identity object and any paired user account used for delegation. A policy aimed at one object type does not automatically protect the other.

Signals that should trigger a block or step-up

  • Access to an unfamiliar resource, tenant or data store.
  • A sudden sign-in or token-use spike compared with the agent’s normal schedule.
  • Repeated failed-access probing across APIs.
  • Confirmed credential compromise or a high-confidence identity risk signal.
  • A request originating outside the approved network, workload or device context.

For high-risk signals, block the agent identity or require a fresh, human-approved authorization rather than allowing a cached session to continue. Apply equivalent controls to the delegated user so an attacker cannot switch from the agent object to the human object to bypass policy.

Maintain a complete lifecycle record

Registration is only the first step. Record who approved the agent, when its permissions expire, what data it may access and which tools it may call. Review ownership when staff change roles. Decommission identities, connectors and network rules when the agent is retired; stale permissions are an avoidable attack path.

Make authorization task-scoped and deny-by-default

Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “Allow only the minimum tools, data, and operations required. Deny everything else by default.” Implement that rule at the identity provider, API gateway and tool broker—not only in an agent prompt.

Authorize each tool invocation

Treat every tool call as a separate authorization decision tied to the initiating principal, target resource and exact operation. Pass the original user or initiating agent in a verifiable claim so a downstream service can distinguish delegated work from an agent acting on its own. AWS prescriptive guidance recommends limiting the downstream operation scope whenever an agent orchestrates a call.

For example, a support agent might read a ticket and draft a reply, but sending the message should require a distinct permission. A finance agent might calculate a payment, while submitting or approving the transaction remains outside its standing rights.

Separate low-risk and high-impact actions

Action class Typical control Reason
Read approved, non-sensitive data Task-scoped token and data-filter policy Limits unnecessary discovery
Create a draft or recommendation Agent execution with logged output Preserves human review before commitment
Send messages or publish content Fresh approval or dual control Prevents impersonation and unintended disclosure
Delete data, purchase, deploy or change permissions Explicit approval, short authorization window and transaction logging These operations are difficult or impossible to undo
Cross-tenant, guest or administrative access Deny by default; exceptional, time-limited grant Reduces blast radius from confused-deputy behavior

Prevent confused-deputy escalation

Do not let an agent use a broad connector because a user is allowed to use the underlying system interactively. Bind the connector to an approved operation, resource set and data-filtering rule. Deny unreviewed plugins, integrations, guest paths and cross-tenant routes. Verify that the effective permission—not merely the requested permission—is recorded for each call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build firewall and network segmentation around the agent

Network controls are containment around identity and authorization. Place the agent, tool connectors and model gateways in segmented zones. Use deny-by-default security-group and firewall rules, then add narrowly defined egress and ingress exceptions.

Allow only required egress

Permit outbound connections only to approved model endpoints, APIs, package or container registries, data stores and management planes. Restrict destination ports, protocols, DNS resolution and service identities where the platform supports them. Block direct internet access unless a documented task requires it; route necessary external calls through an inspected proxy or API gateway.

Separate administrative paths

Keep administration, credential rotation and monitoring on separate network paths from ordinary agent traffic. An agent that can reach its own management plane may be able to disable logging, alter policies or obtain broader credentials. Permit management access only from hardened operator or automation identities.

Use layered cloud controls

In an AWS deployment, AWS Network Firewall, Amazon VPC, AWS Shield and Bedrock AgentCore Runtime can be combined across network, edge and runtime layers. AWS also recommends a distinct identity for every agent and describes Amazon Cognito for end-user authentication and authorization. The exact rule set depends on the account, region and services in use; these products are control points, not a substitute for a permission design.

NIST SP 1800-35, published in June 2025, identifies identity and access management, enhanced identity governance, microsegmentation, SASE and software-defined perimeter technologies as implementation options for zero-trust architectures spanning on-premises and multiple cloud environments.

Isolate what the agent can execute

Network reach and execution capability are different risks. A process can be prevented from reaching a database yet still damage its local runtime, exfiltrate files through an allowed connector or consume excessive CPU. Use runtime isolation and sandboxing in addition to firewall rules.

  • Run untrusted or generated code in an ephemeral sandbox with a read-only base image.
  • Remove shell access, host mounts, privileged containers and unnecessary device access.
  • Apply CPU, memory, storage, process-count and execution-time quotas.
  • Keep secrets outside the runtime and inject only the scoped token needed for the current call.
  • Destroy the sandbox after the task or after a defined idle period.

Microsoft’s AI Defense Capabilities catalog treats runtime isolation and sandboxing, identity and least privilege, monitoring and resource-abuse prevention as separate but complementary capability families. Implement all four where the agent handles untrusted content or can execute code.

Require reliable human control

Users need a dependable pause and stop mechanism, not a conversational request that the agent may ignore. The control plane should be able to suspend an execution, revoke its tokens and block its network routes. Make the action visible to operators and test it under load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use approval gates for irreversible work

Require a fresh approval immediately before sending messages, deleting records, purchasing, deploying software, changing permissions or performing another high-impact operation. Display the exact target, parameters, data to be disclosed and resulting side effects. Do not let an approval for one operation authorize a later, materially different operation.

Enforce policy outside the model

Prompt instructions are useful context but are not an access-control boundary. Enforce organizational policy in the identity provider, policy engine, API gateway, tool broker and transaction system so that a model-generated request cannot bypass a deny rule.

Log the evidence needed to detect and revoke abuse

Record authentication and action events for every agent identity. At minimum, capture:

  • Agent identity, owner, role and effective permission set.
  • Delegated user or initiating principal, when applicable.
  • Target resource, tenant, operation and data classification.
  • Tool name, input and output metadata, policy decision and approval record.
  • Correlation ID linking the user request, model run, tool calls and downstream transactions.
  • Network source, destination, runtime or workload instance and token issuance time.

Monitor unfamiliar-resource access, sign-in spikes, failed-access probing, repeated bypass attempts, anomalous tool sequences, restricted-data requests and unusual output volume. Retain enough context to reconstruct what the agent saw and did, while applying privacy and retention rules to sensitive prompts and outputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a revocation runbook

  1. Pause the agent and terminate active runs.
  2. Disable its identity and revoke outstanding tokens.
  3. Rotate connector, signing and delegated credentials.
  4. Remove stale role assignments, plugin grants and guest or cross-tenant paths.
  5. Block associated network destinations and isolate the runtime or workload.
  6. Preserve logs, prompts, tool arguments, approvals and outputs for investigation.
  7. Re-enable only after ownership, permissions, network rules and dependencies have been reviewed.

Test this sequence periodically. A control that has never been exercised may fail because a token is cached, a secondary identity remains active or a firewall exception was created outside the documented change process.

Compare implementation options by control coverage

Option or layer Identity granularity Authorization and enforcement Network containment Human oversight and telemetry Integration burden
Identity provider with workload identities Per-agent identity, owner and lifecycle Conditional Access, roles and token scope Usually indirect; relies on network controls Strong sign-in and policy events Moderate integration with IAM and SIEM
API gateway or tool broker Per-call principal and connector identity Exact operation, resource and data policy Can centralize approved egress Detailed tool-call and correlation logs High if agents call services directly today
Firewall, VPC and microsegmentation Service identities and workload zones Route and port enforcement; not a replacement for IAM Strong blast-radius and egress control Flow logs; limited business context without correlation IDs High across hybrid environments
Runtime sandbox Workload or sandbox identity Process, filesystem and resource limits Local isolation; pair with network policy Execution and resource telemetry High for legacy agents or host-bound tools
Zero-trust access service, SASE or software-defined perimeter Identity- and context-based access Continuous policy evaluation Useful for distributed users, workloads and partners Central policy and access records Varies with existing network architecture

Evaluate a design on eight axes: per-agent identity and ownership; task, tool, data and tenant boundaries; enforcement points; segmentation and egress; approval, pause and kill mechanisms; identity, tool-call, context and output evidence; registration, expiration, revocation and decommissioning; and integration with existing IAM, SIEM, firewall and cloud platforms.

Common failure modes and fixes

One service account for many agents

Symptom: logs cannot distinguish which agent acted, and disabling one workload would disrupt unrelated automation. Fix: migrate to individual managed or federated identities and assign an owner to each.

Conditional Access covers only the human user

Symptom: the paired user is protected, but the autonomous agent continues with its own token. Fix: create and test policies for both identity object types.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firewall rules allow broad outbound HTTPS

Symptom: an agent can reach arbitrary external services despite having narrow application permissions. Fix: use approved destinations, proxy inspection, service identities and explicit deny rules.

Approval is implemented in the prompt

Symptom: a model can phrase a request as already approved or call a second tool that lacks the same gate. Fix: enforce approval in the transaction API or policy engine and bind it to exact parameters.

Logs omit delegated identity or effective scope

Symptom: investigators see a tool name but cannot determine who initiated it or what permissions were active. Fix: log the initiating principal, effective scope, target, correlation ID and policy decision on every call.

A practical rollout sequence

  1. Inventory: list every agent, plugin, connector, model endpoint, owner, identity and data store.
  2. Classify impact: mark read, write, external-communication, financial, deletion, deployment and permission-changing actions.
  3. Register identities: replace shared or copied human credentials with per-agent workload identities and short-lived tokens.
  4. Define policy: deny unapproved tools, tenants and data; specify exact operations and approval gates.
  5. Segment: place workloads and connectors in zones with explicit ingress and egress rules.
  6. Isolate runtime: sandbox generated code and impose resource and filesystem limits.
  7. Instrument: emit identity, tool-call, network, approval and output events with a shared correlation ID.
  8. Exercise response: disable an agent, revoke tokens, rotate credentials and block routes in a controlled test.
  9. Review continuously: expire unused grants, revalidate owners and adjust policies from observed behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a firewall be the primary control for an AI agent?

No. Use the firewall to limit reachable services and contain lateral movement, while identity, task-scoped authorization and runtime isolation control what the agent is allowed to do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do agents need separate Conditional Access policies from users?

Yes. Agent identity objects and paired user accounts are distinct policy targets; protecting one does not automatically protect the other.

What must be approved by a human?

Require fresh approval for sending messages, deleting data, purchasing, deploying, changing permissions and other irreversible or high-impact operations.

How long should an agent token last?

Use the shortest lifetime compatible with the task, audience and platform, and make revocation and rotation part of the tested incident procedure.

Which events are most useful during an investigation?

Correlate authentication, effective permissions, initiating principal, target resource, tool arguments and outputs, policy decisions, approvals and network destinations.
