Ember has scheduled its new Portree–Inverness bus service to begin on Wednesday 7 October 2026. The operator says it will run one return service every day, but some journeys—including local trips within Skye—will initially be restricted.
When does Ember’s Portree–Inverness bus start?
Ember announced the route on 30 September 2026 and scheduled its launch for Wednesday 7 October 2026. It is therefore an announced, upcoming service as of 3 October 2026, not yet an operating route. Ember’s announcement says the bus will run seven days a week, with one return service per day.

Can you book a short journey or travel within Skye?
Not necessarily at launch. Ember says some journeys will initially be restricted to longer trips, so passengers may not be able to book every possible pair of stops, including local journeys within Skye. The operator expects to remove the restrictions and add more stops “in a few months’ time,” but has not announced a specific change date. Check the available journey options for your travel date rather than assuming a particular stop pair is bookable.
What booking restrictions should passengers check?
- Check whether your chosen stop is available for pickup, drop-off, or both; the E21 timetable marks some stops as pickup-only or drop-off-only.
- For journeys marked in the timetable, book at least ten minutes before the scheduled departure.
- Confirm that the exact boarding and alighting stops are offered for your date in Ember’s live booking information.
Is Ember the only bus between Inverness and Portree?
No. Scottish Citylink’s 917 timetable also lists service between Inverness and Portree, with multiple departures. See the 917 timetable. When comparing options, check the departure that fits your itinerary, scheduled journey time, exact boarding and alighting points, whether your stop pair is permitted, any advance-booking condition, fare and current ticket availability.
