If email is not working on your iPad, first check that the iPad is online and your email provider is operating. Then separate the problem: missing messages, failed sending, or notifications that are not appearing. Avoid deleting the account until you have confirmed your messages are available elsewhere.
Start with the checks that apply to any email problem
- Confirm internet access. Open a webpage or another online service on the iPad. If it cannot connect, resolve the Wi-Fi or cellular connection first.
- Check whether the email service is down. Look at your provider’s service-status page or contact the provider. An outage will not be fixed by changing the account on the iPad.
- Identify the account provider. The right settings and sign-in requirements differ for iCloud Mail, Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, and other services. For a work or school account, the organization’s administrator may control access.
- Verify the sign-in. If Mail asks for a password, sign in to the provider’s website with the same email address and password. If website sign-in works but Mail still rejects the account, ask the provider or administrator about account settings and authentication restrictions. Two-step verification may require provider authorization or a special password.
If you are not receiving new email
Check when Mail fetches messages
Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data. Choose an available setting or schedule that suits the account. Whether Push is available depends on the provider; if it is not supported, the account uses Fetch. On iPad, the Automatically option fetches in the background only while the device is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, so messages may not appear immediately.
Separate delivery from alerts
If messages appear when you open Mail but you do not see alerts, sounds, or badges, check Settings > Notifications > Mail. Notification settings affect how you are alerted; they do not determine whether the provider delivered the message.
For a workplace or school account
Ask the system administrator to check the account and server configuration, as well as any security rules that could prevent Mail from connecting or retrieving messages.

If you cannot send email
- Check Outbox. In Mail, look for the message in the Outbox and open it.
- Verify the recipient. Correct any mistake in the email address, then tap Send again.
- Check sign-in and security requirements. Confirm you can sign in through the provider’s website. If Mail still cannot send, ask the provider or administrator whether the account requires a special password, authorization, or particular settings.
If an Undo Send button is still available shortly after you tap Send, the message has not yet been sent. Allow the undo period to pass, then check the Outbox or Sent mailbox to confirm its status.
Before removing and adding the account again
Do not delete the account as an early troubleshooting step. First sign in to the email provider’s website and confirm the messages you need are there, or save them somewhere other than the iPad. Apple notes that a backup preserves mail settings, not the email itself, and changing account settings can remove messages previously downloaded to the device.

Once you have protected your mail, Apple’s current route is Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts. Select the account and delete it, then add it again. Menu wording can vary by iPadOS version. For setup instructions, see Apple’s guide to setting up mail accounts on iPad. If the provider is not listed or automatic setup fails, choose Add Other Account > Mail Account. Get any manual server settings from the provider or workplace administrator rather than guessing.

If the problem is with iCloud Mail
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > Mail. Make sure Use on this iPad is enabled; the displayed wording can vary by iPadOS release.
- Confirm the iPad has internet access and is running the latest iPadOS version supported by the device.
- Check Apple’s iCloud Mail system status. If the service is unavailable, wait and try again after it recovers.
