EDR usually protects a business better against an active ransomware intrusion, but it does not replace antivirus. Antivirus is the prevention baseline that blocks known malware and scans files in real time. Endpoint detection and response (EDR) adds continuous behavioral telemetry, investigation, threat hunting and containment, including isolating a compromised device. The strongest program combines centrally managed, current antivirus with EDR (or application allowlisting), network monitoring and encrypted, immutable backups, then assigns people or a managed service to act on the alerts.
What the two technologies actually do
Antivirus is the prevention and detection baseline
Traditional antivirus is primarily a prevention and detection control. It checks files and activity against known malicious patterns and other detection logic, then blocks or quarantines a threat. Real-time scanning matters because ransomware can arrive through an attachment, download, removable media or a vulnerable service and begin encrypting files quickly.
Antivirus is also comparatively simple to operate: enable it on every supported host, keep its engine and threat intelligence updated, enforce a central policy and review detections. That simplicity is valuable for small organizations and remains necessary even when an EDR agent is installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEDR records context and supports response
Microsoft Security defines endpoint detection and response as “a cybersecurity solution that monitors endpoint activity, detects suspicious behavior, and helps security teams investigate and respond to threats in real time.” The definition, published May 20, 2026, captures the key difference from antivirus: EDR is an investigation and response system as well as a detector.

Microsoft’s technical documentation describes endpoint telemetry that can include:
- Process creation and execution chains
- Network connections and unusual outbound activity
- Kernel and memory-manager events
- User logins and account activity
- Registry changes
- File-system changes
EDR aggregates related alerts into an incident, lets an analyst search historical activity, and can provide advanced hunting and live response. Depending on the product and plan, responders can isolate a device from the network, quarantine a file and trigger automated investigation and response actions. Those capabilities help answer not only “What was blocked?” but also “How did the attacker enter, what else did it touch and which systems must be contained?”
Why EDR is generally stronger against an active ransomware attack
Ransomware operators increasingly use legitimate administration tools, stolen credentials and scripts rather than a single easily recognized file. A campaign may compromise one workstation, discover shared drives, move laterally, disable defenses and then encrypt data across servers. Behavior that looks harmless in isolation can become clearly malicious when events are connected over time.

EDR can associate the initial execution with credential use, remote logons, unusual process spawning, mass file modifications and connections to other hosts. That context allows a security team to investigate the attack path, stop lateral movement and isolate an endpoint while the incident is still developing. Antivirus may block a known payload or suspicious file, but it generally does not provide the same cross-event investigation or containment workflow.
This is a capability comparison, not a promise of prevention. EDR can miss an attack, be disabled, or generate an alert that nobody investigates. A business that cannot monitor and respond may gain little practical protection from an expensive EDR subscription. The effective choice therefore depends on both technical capability and the organization’s operating model.
EDR and antivirus compared by ransomware-relevant capability
| Capability | Antivirus | EDR | Why it matters for ransomware |
|---|---|---|---|
| Known-malware prevention | Core function; blocks or quarantines recognized threats and scans in real time. | Usually included or integrated, but confirm the plan. | Stops common precursor infections and known ransomware samples. |
| Behavior and fileless-threat detection | Limited compared with EDR’s contextual analysis. | Analyzes suspicious behavior and can cover attacks that do not rely on a traditional file. | Useful when attackers use scripts, legitimate tools or novel payloads. |
| Ransomware attack disruption | May block a file or activity it recognizes. | Can connect events, raise an incident and support containment such as device isolation. | Interrupts an intrusion before it spreads to more hosts. |
| Endpoint telemetry | Detection events and basic status information. | Process, network, kernel and memory-manager, login, registry and file-system activity may be searchable. | Reconstructs the attack path and identifies affected assets. |
| Alert triage and threat hunting | Usually limited to reviewing detections. | Incident aggregation, historical search and advanced hunting are standard EDR functions. | Finds related activity that did not trigger an individual malware alert. |
| Automated investigation | Often limited to automatic blocking or quarantine. | Some plans investigate alerts and recommend or execute response actions. | Reduces time to contain a fast-moving campaign, subject to policy and tuning. |
| Device isolation and live response | Not normally a full investigation channel. | Can isolate a device and provide live response tools, depending on the product. | Prevents a compromised laptop or server from reaching additional systems. |
| Staffing requirement | Lower day-to-day investigative workload. | Requires alert triage, investigation, tuning and response ownership, internally or through a managed provider. | Untended EDR alerts do not contain an attack. |
| Coverage and integrations | Check support for laptops, servers and each operating system. | Check agent coverage, telemetry retention and SIEM/XDR integration for the exact plan. | Gaps leave an attacker a place to hide or spread. |
| Total cost | Subscription plus administration. | Subscription plus storage, integrations and analyst or managed-service time. | The affordable product is the one the organization can operate continuously. |
Can antivirus stop ransomware by itself?
Yes, antivirus can stop a ransomware sample when its detection logic recognizes the file or activity before encryption begins. It is especially valuable against known malware and common delivery attempts. However, no antivirus-only deployment should be treated as a complete ransomware strategy. A novel payload, stolen account, abused remote-management tool or unpatched service can bypass a file-focused control. Even a blocked infection may leave uncertainty about whether the attacker accessed other systems first.

For that reason, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends installing, regularly updating and enabling real-time antivirus on all hosts while also using application allowlisting and/or EDR on all assets. Its guidance additionally calls for network monitoring that can identify abnormal and lateral connections and encrypted, immutable backups covering the organization’s data infrastructure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do you need EDR if antivirus is already installed?
Usually, yes, when the business holds sensitive data, operates servers or shared storage, has remote users, or cannot tolerate prolonged downtime. Antivirus remains the first layer; EDR supplies the visibility and containment that antivirus generally lacks.
Antivirus may be sufficient as a temporary baseline when
- The organization is very small, has few endpoints and has no practical way to monitor EDR alerts yet.
- Devices contain low-impact data and are isolated from critical systems.
- A managed security provider is not available immediately and the priority is to establish centrally managed, updated real-time protection.
These are risk-management compromises, not evidence that antivirus and EDR are equivalent. In such cases, document the exposure, harden identity and patching, restrict administrative rights, segment important systems and set a date to reassess EDR or a managed detection service.

EDR should move up the priority list when
- A ransomware outage would stop revenue, healthcare, production or essential public services.
- Endpoints can reach file servers, backup systems or other business-critical hosts.
- The business has remote-access infrastructure, privileged accounts or a history of suspicious activity.
- Regulatory, contractual or insurance requirements call for centralized detection and response.
- The organization needs evidence of what happened, which accounts were used and which devices require remediation.
How to build a layered ransomware defense
Endpoint software is one control in a recovery chain. CISA’s recommended combination and NIST Special Publication 1800-26’s focus on detection, mitigation, containment and recovery provide a practical sequence.
- Inventory every asset. List laptops, desktops, servers, virtual machines and supported operating systems. Include devices outside the office and systems that store or administer backups.
- Deploy centrally managed antivirus everywhere. Enable real-time protection, automatic updates and tamper protection where available. Alert on disabled agents and stale signatures.
- Add EDR or application allowlisting to all assets that matter. Confirm that the chosen plan supports servers as well as user devices, retains enough telemetry for investigations and can isolate a device.
- Define response ownership. Decide who receives high-severity alerts, who can isolate a host, who contacts leadership and who coordinates legal, regulatory and communications decisions. If there is no internal coverage, contract a provider that explicitly monitors and responds rather than merely forwarding alerts.
- Monitor network behavior. Look for unusual outbound connections, remote administration between workstations, rapid connections to many hosts and access to backup infrastructure.
- Reduce execution opportunities. Patch internet-facing and high-value systems, remove unnecessary local administrator rights, restrict scripting where business needs allow, and use email and web controls to reduce malicious downloads.
- Protect identities. Require strong multifactor authentication for remote and privileged access, separate administrative accounts and promptly disable departed users. An endpoint agent cannot compensate for an attacker using a valid, over-privileged account.
- Segment critical systems. Limit which workstations can reach servers, management interfaces and backup repositories. Segmentation narrows the blast radius when one endpoint is compromised.
- Create encrypted, immutable backups. Keep copies that ransomware cannot alter through ordinary administrative credentials. Include the organization’s data infrastructure, not only desktop files.
- Test restoration and the incident plan. A backup is a recovery control only when the business can restore it within an acceptable time and knows who makes each decision.

Do not treat a vendor’s single prevention percentage as proof that one product is universally better. The available data for this comparison found no independent, cross-business statistic quantifying EDR’s ransomware advantage over antivirus. Tests that use different samples, settings, response teams and measurement periods are not directly comparable.
A practical EDR rollout for a small business
Phase 1: Establish the baseline
- Confirm every endpoint has centrally managed, updated antivirus with real-time scanning.
- Remove duplicate or conflicting security agents that can create blind spots or performance problems.
- Record critical systems, backup locations, administrators and remote-access paths.
Phase 2: Pilot and tune
- Install the EDR agent on a representative group of workstations and at least one non-production server.
- Observe normal line-of-business tools, scripts, software updates and remote-support activity.
- Adjust exclusions narrowly and document each one; broad exclusions can create a ransomware path.
- Test alert delivery, incident grouping and device isolation with a controlled, authorized exercise.
Phase 3: Expand with ownership
- Deploy to remaining laptops and servers, checking that agents report healthy status.
- Set severity-based notifications and an escalation schedule that someone covers outside office hours if the risk requires it.
- Give responders least-privilege access to investigate and isolate, while reserving destructive actions for approved roles.
- Review unresolved alerts, false positives, stale agents and unmonitored assets at least monthly.
Phase 4: Prove recovery
- Run a tabletop exercise in which an endpoint begins mass file changes.
- Isolate the device, identify related accounts and hosts, and verify that backups remain unreachable from the compromised credentials.
- Restore a representative business service and record the elapsed time, missing dependencies and decisions that need clearer ownership.
What to do when ransomware activity is detected
Use the organization’s incident plan, but the technical priorities are consistent:
- Contain quickly. Use EDR isolation when available; otherwise disconnect the suspected device from wired and wireless networks without destroying evidence.
- Protect backups and identities. Disable or rotate suspected compromised accounts and restrict access to backup systems. Do not reconnect backup repositories merely to make them convenient to reach.
- Preserve evidence. Keep EDR timelines, alert details, relevant logs and a record of actions. Avoid wiping every device before determining scope.
- Scope the intrusion. Search for the same accounts, processes, remote logons, network destinations and file changes on other hosts.
- Eradicate and remediate. Remove persistence, patch the entry point, reset credentials and rebuild systems when integrity cannot be trusted.
- Recover deliberately. Restore from known-good immutable backups, validate the environment and monitor closely for reinfection.
- Meet obligations. Involve legal, privacy, insurance and law-enforcement contacts as required by the organization’s jurisdiction and contracts.
How to judge whether the investment is working
Track operational measures rather than a marketing score. Useful measures include the percentage of assets with healthy antivirus and EDR agents, time from alert to human review, time from confirmation to isolation, number of unmonitored servers, age of unresolved high-severity alerts, backup restoration time and the proportion of critical systems covered by a recent recovery test.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteReview near misses as well as incidents. A blocked payload with no investigation may conceal an account or network problem; an EDR alert that was contained quickly can reveal where playbooks and permissions worked well. The goal is a repeatable reduction in attacker dwell time and recovery uncertainty.
Bottom line for business buyers
Choose antivirus as the non-negotiable prevention layer. Choose EDR when the business needs to detect behavior, investigate an intrusion, hunt across endpoints and isolate compromised devices. For most organizations exposed to meaningful ransomware impact, the answer is both, centrally managed and tied to network monitoring, identity controls, patching, least privilege, segmentation and encrypted immutable backups.
EDR is worth the additional cost only when someone is accountable for its alerts and response actions. If that capability does not exist internally, budget for managed monitoring or start with a simpler, well-operated baseline while building the people and processes required for EDR. The product name matters less than complete coverage, timely action and a recovery plan that has been tested.
