There is no universally “best” AI computer for a satellite. Select hardware by mission assurance first, then by size, weight and power (SWaP), thermal path, radiation environment, fault tolerance and software support. A Jetson Orin NX can be an excellent inference module for a qualified spacecraft design; a developer kit is useful for prototyping but is not flight-qualified. Radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA systems remain the safer choice when deterministic behavior and upset recovery matter more than commercial-GPU convenience.
What onboard edge AI does in a spacecraft
Onboard edge AI runs inference next to the sensors instead of downlinking every raw image, waveform or telemetry packet to Earth. A spacecraft can classify clouds, detect changes, identify targets, reject unusable observations, compress data intelligently or prioritize an emergency event before the next communications pass. The benefit is lower downlink volume and faster decisions; the cost is adding a computer that must operate continuously inside a constrained electrical, thermal and radiation environment.
That trade-off changes the buying question. A board with the highest advertised neural-network throughput may be a poor spacecraft computer if it cannot be conduction-cooled, lacks error detection, has no credible radiation-assurance plan or cannot be supplied for the mission lifetime. NASA describes the spacecraft command-and-data-handling foundation as the combination of board design and form factor, processor choice, memory architecture, power conditioning and radiation tolerance. Those characteristics should be screened before comparing accelerator figures.
Start with the mission envelope
Orbit and radiation environment
Radiation risk depends on orbit, mission duration, shielding, solar activity and the consequences of a fault. Low Earth orbit is not equivalent to a geostationary or deep-space mission, and a short technology demonstration does not impose the same assurance burden as a multi-year science spacecraft. Define the expected total ionizing dose (TID), single-event effects and acceptable recovery behavior before selecting a processor.

A published NASA Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual Institute, 2026 listing gives EnduroSat’s GPC a stated radiation-hardness-assurance value of 40 krad TID. Treat that as the listed assurance figure for that system, not as a universal rating for every processor or carrier board. A commercial module must not be called radiation hardened without mission-specific analysis, testing or a vendor assurance package.
SWaP and mechanical envelope
Record the complete flight computer mass and volume: processor module, carrier, power conversion, storage, harness, watchdog, shielding, heat spreader and mounting hardware. A module that fits a laboratory enclosure can exceed the spacecraft’s allocation after these additions.
CubeSat units provide a useful reference for scale. ESA describes Technology CubeSat units in the 1-to-10-kilogram range, with a 10 × 10 × 10 cm unit form factor. That does not mean a complete AI payload must fit in one unit, but it makes every watt, connector and heat path consequential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPower profile and duty cycle
Use measured power for the intended model and operating mode rather than a processor’s theoretical maximum. Separate idle, boot, sensor-ingest, inference, storage and fault-recovery states. Include conversion losses and the peak current that the spacecraft power system must supply when the accelerator starts or changes frequency.
NASA’s 2026 avionics survey lists Space Edge One using an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX in a 10 × 10 cm package with a 7 W figure for a low-Earth-orbit implementation. That is a useful example of compact onboard AI, not a guarantee that another Xavier NX or a later Jetson design will consume 7 W in your workload.
Thermal path
In vacuum, there is no air convection to remove heat. The design normally conducts heat from the module through a carrier, thermal interface and chassis to a radiator. High-performance COTS modules are especially challenging because their short-term laboratory performance can require a thermal solution that the spacecraft cannot accommodate. ESA identifies radiation tolerance and thermal management within conduction-cooled platforms as key challenges when qualifying such modules.
Shortlist the hardware classes
| Hardware class | Best use | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit | Model bring-up, hardware-in-the-loop tests and ground prototypes | Development hardware. It does not establish radiation, vibration, thermal-vacuum or life qualification for flight. |
| Jetson Orin NX module | Compact inference in a mission-specific flight computer | Requires a custom carrier, power conditioning, conduction-cooling solution, supervisor and qualification plan. ESA’s Sterna concept uses an Orin NX in a PC/104-compatible form factor. |
| Radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA systems | Deterministic control, fault tolerance and missions with explicit radiation assurance | NASA’s onboard-processing table includes LEON, GR712RC, RTG4 and related systems. AI may require FPGA development or a hybrid architecture rather than a CUDA workflow. |
| SpaceCube and HPSC approaches | High-assurance science processing and future autonomy programs | SpaceCube uses radiation-tolerant FPGA technology with upset detection and correction. NASA says HPSC is intended to provide high-performance AI dataflow processing with scalable vector computing for advanced science and autonomy systems. |
| RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition | Ground-station processing of large satellite-data pipelines | Ground equipment is not constrained by launch mass or space radiation in the same way, so a much larger accelerator can be appropriate. It is not a spacecraft-board recommendation. |
Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit: use it to prove the workload
The developer kit is a practical starting point for converting a model, connecting cameras or other sensors, measuring latency and building a hardware-in-the-loop test rig. Keep the distinction explicit in project documentation: a development kit demonstrates software behavior and approximate performance; it does not demonstrate that the design will survive launch, vacuum, thermal cycling, radiation or years of operation.
Jetson Orin NX: a module inside a qualified design
An Orin NX module can reduce development time when the mission needs GPU-accelerated inference and the team can accept a commercial module’s qualification burden. Build it into a carrier with controlled power sequencing, nonvolatile boot devices, a hardware watchdog, a safe-mode path and a conductive thermal interface. Sterna, an ESA project, reports at least 100 TOPS (INT8) in a PC/104-compatible form factor and a mass under 500 g. Those values describe that project’s implementation and test conditions; they are not a blanket specification for every Orin NX integration.
Radiation-tolerant CPU and FPGA systems
Choose this class when a transient error must be detected and corrected, when deterministic timing is more important than peak neural-network throughput or when the program needs established radiation-assurance evidence. A CPU can handle control and housekeeping while an FPGA performs fixed-function preprocessing, filtering or inference. The development cost is higher if the team is accustomed to CUDA, but the architecture can provide predictable timing and a clearer fault-containment boundary.
SpaceCube and HPSC-style architectures
NASA’s SpaceCube family demonstrates a radiation-tolerant FPGA approach with upset detection and correction for onboard science and autonomy. NASA characterizes the High Performance Spaceflight Computing (HPSC) project as providing “high performance AI dataflow processing with scalable vector computing capabilities” for future advanced space systems. These approaches are most relevant when the program can align with a larger institutional or multi-mission technology roadmap rather than buying a readily available development board.
How to compare candidates fairly
Use one requirements sheet for every candidate. Ask suppliers to fill in the same fields and label each value as measured, modeled, maximum, typical or not stated.

Design the flight computer around the module
- Freeze the mission workload. Define sensor types, input rate, model versions, precision, acceptable latency, confidence thresholds and what happens when inference is unavailable.
- Allocate SWaP at spacecraft level. Reserve mass, volume, average power, peak power and heat rejection for the complete assembly, not only the processor module.
- Select the assurance class. Decide whether a commercial module with testing and mitigation is acceptable or whether radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA hardware is mandatory.
- Design power and reset domains. Add current limiting, sequencing, brownout handling, independent watchdog control and a recovery path that does not depend on the main AI processor.
- Define the thermal interface. Model conduction from silicon to carrier and chassis, then test the hottest model at the worst expected spacecraft temperature and voltage.
- Add storage and boot resilience. Keep a verified fallback image, protect configuration data, and make it possible to re-image or disable the accelerator while preserving command and telemetry.
- Build a representative engineering model. Use the flight carrier, memory population, cables, thermal interface and enclosure—not only a desktop development kit.
- Run environmental and fault tests. Plan vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum, electromagnetic compatibility and radiation testing appropriate to the orbit and assurance target. Inject watchdog timeouts, corrupted images, sensor disconnects, memory faults and power interruptions.
- Lock the software bill of materials. Record operating-system, driver, CUDA or FPGA-tool versions, model files, compiler flags and hashes so the qualified build can be reproduced.
- Review mission operations. Specify telemetry for temperature, voltage, resets, inference health and confidence distributions, plus commands for safe mode, rollback and workload throttling.
Power, thermal and mechanical integration details
Measure the whole operating envelope
Profile the computer during boot, sensor acquisition, preprocessing, inference, compression, storage and downlink preparation. Repeat measurements at the lowest and highest allowable input voltage and at hot and cold thermal limits. A “7 W” or “36 W maximum” value is meaningful only when its conditions are known.
NASA’s 2026 table lists 36 W maximum for the TelePIX TetraPLEX onboard processor, which combines a PolarFire SoC and NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX. That entry is a system-level figure for the listed implementation; it should not be used as the power budget for an Orin NX module alone.
Provide a conduction path
Use a mechanically constrained interface that survives launch loads while maintaining thermal contact over temperature. Check flatness, interface-material outgassing, fastener preload and connector retention. If the accelerator must throttle to stay within its thermal limit, record the resulting inference latency and make that mode visible to flight software.
Keep mass and volume claims scoped
Sterna’s reported under-500-gram mass applies to its PC/104-compatible implementation, not to every carrier, enclosure or payload combination. Likewise, the 10 × 10 cm Space Edge One description identifies a compact LEO implementation; it does not define a universal CubeSat AI size.

Radiation assurance is a system property. It includes semiconductor selection, memory protection, shielding, error detection, software recovery, redundancy and operations. A module can continue operating after a transient upset only if the surrounding design detects the fault and returns the spacecraft to a known state.
- Detect: monitor memory errors, watchdog expirations, illegal states, temperature, voltage and accelerator-health signals.
- Contain: isolate a failed inference process or power domain from command, attitude and communications functions.
- Recover: restart the workload, reload a verified image or switch to a reduced-function CPU/FPGA path.
- Degrade safely: continue collecting essential telemetry or operate a deterministic fallback when AI confidence is low or the accelerator is unavailable.
- Report: downlink fault counters, reset causes, thermal state and model-health indicators so ground operators can distinguish radiation events from software defects.
Radiation-tolerant FPGA systems can implement upset detection and correction in hardware, as demonstrated by NASA’s SpaceCube approach. For a COTS module, obtain the supplier’s test conditions and failure-rate assumptions, then verify that they match the mission orbit and shielding rather than treating a generic “space” reference as qualification.

Software and model engineering
Benchmark the deployed model
Record precision (for example, INT8), input resolution, preprocessing, postprocessing, batch size, clock state, temperature and end-to-end latency. TOPS is a compute-rate indicator, not a mission-success metric. A smaller model with predictable latency and stable confidence can be more useful than a larger model that forces thermal throttling or exceeds the downlink decision window.
Plan for offline operation
Assume that the spacecraft may be out of contact when a model fails. Package the model, runtime and dependencies in a reproducible image. Include a known-good model and a commandable way to revert to it. Make model updates verifiable, authenticated and restart-safe.
Separate AI from safety-critical control
Do not let an experimental classifier directly command propulsion, attitude or power switching without an independent safety boundary. Use the AI result as a bounded input to a deterministic supervisor, with confidence limits, timeouts and explicit “no decision” behavior.
When a ground accelerator is the better answer
Many missions should process raw data on Earth rather than adding a high-power accelerator to the spacecraft. Ground stations have access to mains power, active cooling, replacement hardware and large storage. NVIDIA lists the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition for ground-based satellite-data processing, where large batch pipelines and archive reprocessing dominate and radiation is not a design constraint.
Use onboard inference when latency, contact gaps, downlink limits or privacy requirements justify the added flight risk. Use ground inference when the mission can tolerate delay and the raw data volume can be transmitted economically. A split architecture is often practical: a small deterministic or low-power classifier flies, while a larger ground model performs detailed analysis.
Decision paths for common projects
University or early commercial CubeSat
Start with a Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit or similar development platform for model bring-up and hardware-in-the-loop work. Once the workload is stable, decide whether the flight design can accept a qualified Orin NX integration or needs a simpler CPU/FPGA path. Keep the prototype designation out of the flight-acceptance documentation.
LEO technology demonstration
A compact commercial module may be reasonable if the mission duration and consequence of failure are limited, the design includes watchdog and safe-mode recovery, and the team funds environmental and radiation testing. The Space Edge One example shows that a Jetson Xavier NX-class computer can be integrated in a 7 W, 10 × 10 cm LEO implementation, but the example does not remove the need for mission-specific qualification.
Long-duration or high-consequence mission
Favor radiation-tolerant processors, FPGA acceleration or a hybrid computer with a deterministic supervisory path. Require documented TID and single-event analyses, ECC behavior, upset recovery and supply-chain continuity. SpaceCube and HPSC-style programs are relevant reference architectures when the assurance requirement exceeds what a commercial module can credibly provide.
High-volume Earth-observation constellation
Compare the cost of onboard filtering against downlink and ground-processing costs. Standardize a qualified carrier and thermal interface across spacecraft, then keep model execution profiles identical so operations teams can detect drift. A ground accelerator can handle reprocessing while the spacecraft runs a bounded, low-latency model.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing by TOPS alone: throughput without model, precision, temperature and latency conditions is not a deployment estimate.
- Calling a developer kit flight hardware: development availability says nothing about radiation, vibration, vacuum or lifecycle qualification.
- Budgeting module power only: include conversion losses, memory, storage, carrier logic, fans or pumps used during testing, and thermal-control hardware.
- Ignoring the reset architecture: an AI computer that cannot be power-cycled or re-imaged independently can turn a transient fault into a mission outage.
- Leaving software versions open: driver and runtime changes can alter numerical results, timing or accelerator support after qualification.
- Assuming one radiation number applies everywhere: a stated 40 krad TID value belongs to the listed EnduroSat GPC assurance context, not to unrelated boards.
- Using an unbounded AI output: every autonomous action needs limits, confidence handling and a deterministic fallback.
FAQ
Can a Jetson Orin survive in orbit?
An Orin module can be part of an orbital design, but survival is not established by the commercial product name. The spacecraft team must qualify the complete module, carrier, memory, thermal path, shielding, software and recovery design for its orbit and mission duration.
Recommended Free Tools
What is the best CubeSat AI board?
The best choice depends on whether the priority is rapid model development, deterministic control or radiation assurance. Use a developer kit for bring-up, an Orin NX-based design for compact GPU inference after qualification, and a radiation-tolerant CPU/FPGA system when fault tolerance and predictable behavior dominate.
Is 100 TOPS enough for satellite AI?
It may be more than enough or still inadequate. The ESA Sterna project reports at least 100 TOPS (INT8), but useful capacity depends on the deployed model, input rate, precision, thermal state, memory traffic and end-to-end latency.
How much radiation tolerance should a spacecraft computer have?
Set the requirement from the orbit, shielding, duration and acceptable failure rate. Use a documented TID and single-event-effects analysis; do not substitute a generic commercial rating or a value from another spacecraft.
Should AI run onboard or at the ground station?
Run it onboard when low latency, limited contact or downlink economics require an immediate decision. Run it on the ground when delay is acceptable and the mission benefits from larger, replaceable accelerators and easier model updates.

Frequently Asked Questions
What evidence should a vendor provide before an Orin-based design enters qualification?
Request environmental test conditions, radiation data or assumptions, thermal limits, power measurements, parts and lifecycle information, software-version support, and a clear definition of which claims apply to the module versus the complete carrier.
Can a CPU/FPGA computer run modern neural-network models?
Yes, but the implementation may require FPGA-specific acceleration, quantization and a different toolchain from CUDA. Evaluate deterministic latency, model coverage and development effort alongside raw throughput.
What should telemetry include for an onboard AI computer?
At minimum, monitor temperature, voltage, reset cause, watchdog status, memory or ECC errors, accelerator health, model version and confidence or quality indicators needed to identify degraded inference.
