Start with one business goal, make a video that helps a specific audience take a useful next step, and choose where to publish it based on how those people use each platform. Then measure the result against that goal—not views alone. A product demo, customer story, tutorial, or behind-the-scenes clip can all work; no single format, platform, or posting schedule fits every business.
Start with a goal you can measure
Before filming, decide what the video should do. A video intended to introduce your business needs a different success measure from one meant to bring people to a booking page.

Choose the primary measure before publishing so you can judge the video against its purpose. Views can show that people watched, but by themselves they do not establish that the video brought useful traffic or business results.

- Product demonstrations: Show how an item works, what problem it addresses, or how to use it.
- Service explainers: Walk through what happens when a customer books or buys.
- Frequently asked questions: Answer one question clearly rather than trying to cover every detail at once.
- Customer stories or testimonials: Share a customer’s experience only with their permission.
- Behind-the-scenes footage: Show a process, workspace, or preparation that helps people understand the business.
- Team profiles: Introduce the people customers may meet or work with.
- Event stories: Capture a local event or other moment connected to your business.
Give each video a clear opening that identifies the subject or benefit, a focused explanation, and one relevant next step. Avoid trying to make a single clip serve several unrelated goals.
Which platform should you use?
Choose based on your audience, goal, and content—not on a platform’s popularity in general. Oklahoma State University Extension offers these as starting points: Facebook for community-building, Instagram for visual product presentation, and YouTube for longer educational videos or tutorials. They are not universal rules; one business may use several channels for different purposes.
For B2B context, Wistia’s 2026 State of Video Report says 81% of surveyed teams shared video on LinkedIn and 76% on YouTube. Those are findings about the teams in Wistia’s report, not proof that either channel is best for every business. Consider where your intended viewers already spend time and what kind of video they would find useful there.

Adapt the video to each destination
Do not assume one exported file will display well everywhere. A vertical clip for a short-form feed, a horizontal tutorial, and a video embedded on a product page may need different framing, length, or presentation. Wistia’s 2026 report says 76% of teams adjusted aspect ratio depending on where they published; treat that as a report finding, not a rule that every post needs a separate edit.

Sprout Social’s guide, updated May 13, 2026, describes differing platform and placement specifications and cautions that requirements change. A third-party scheduling tool may impose limits that differ from the platform’s native upload rules. Mismatched settings can lead to cropping, compression, or rejection. Microsoft’s small-business video guidance, published January 11, 2024, also distinguishes general video advice from requirements for formats such as ads, Shorts, and Reels.
Wistia’s 2026 report says 67% of teams sharing social clips posted them on LinkedIn, 49% on Instagram, 41% on YouTube, and 34% on Facebook. It also reports that 60% used social clips to link back to their website. These figures describe surveyed teams and do not predict results for an individual business. Use them as ideas to test, not a platform checklist.

Choose a length that serves the idea
Shorter is not automatically better. Wistia’s 2026 analysis found that shorter videos tended to have higher engagement rates, while longer videos could generate more total watch time. Its dataset also showed stronger engagement for educational and tutorial videos, with variation by industry and intent. A concise product clip may suit a quick feed visit; a detailed tutorial may need more time to answer the question well. Cut material that does not help the viewer, but do not remove useful explanation just to hit an arbitrary duration.
Give viewers a clear next step
Make the action specific to the video and easy to understand: visit the relevant product page, book a consultation, sign up, or download a useful resource. A generic request to “learn more” is less helpful if the viewer cannot tell where to go or what they will find.
Where the platform or hosting setup supports it, a clickable call to action, annotation link, or lead-generation form can make the next step available within or alongside the video. Wistia’s 2026 report describes these interactive elements and reports that calls to action were the most commonly used of them in its dataset, while lead-generation forms were least used but generated comparatively high clicks in its analysis. Those results are not a guarantee for another business or setup.

Distribute the video where it can do its job
Use destinations that make sense for the audience and objective. Social channels can help a clip reach existing followers and new viewers; a relevant landing page or product page can give a more detailed explanation; email can put a video in front of people who have already opted into your communications. Wistia describes social media and landing pages as common sharing destinations and email as another popular channel.
Repurposing is useful when it respects the destination. A social excerpt can point to a fuller tutorial or product page, but check its crop, opening, captions, and call to action before posting. If you use paid promotion, set the campaign objective and audience deliberately. Oklahoma State University Extension advises combining organic activity with paid promotion where appropriate and notes that paid posts can receive less organic interaction; assess paid and organic results in the context of their different purposes.

After publishing, compare the chosen measure with the goal you set. Look at comments and questions as well as numerical metrics: they can reveal what viewers understood, what they still need explained, or which topic to cover next. Use that feedback to adjust the next video’s subject, format, destination, or call to action.

Wistia’s 2026 report says teams most commonly named view counts, conversion assists, and social engagement among their top video-success measures. It also found that homepage, video gallery, and product pages had among the highest play rates in its analysis of videos hosted on Wistia. These vendor-reported findings can suggest tests—for example, whether a product-page video helps visitors—but do not establish that the same placement or outcome will work for every business.
