For most Windows PCs, press Windows+Shift+S. Choose rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip, select what you need, and the image is copied to your clipboard. Click the notification to open it in Snipping Tool, where you can annotate, crop, save, or share it. For an entire screen saved immediately as a file, press Windows+PrtScn; Windows stores it in Pictures > Screenshots.
This guide covers the quickest shortcut for each capture goal, where each result goes, keyboard variations, editing, troubleshooting, and an automated option for webpages.
Choose the shortcut that matches your goal

These shortcuts are documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11 by Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut guide and its Print Screen instructions.
Best all-purpose method: Windows+Shift+S
- Open the content you want to capture and arrange it on screen.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode: rectangular, freeform, window, or full screen.
- Drag around the region, draw the freeform outline, select a window, or choose the full-screen command.
- Use the notification that appears to open the snip in Snipping Tool. From there, annotate, crop, copy, share, or select Save as to choose a filename and folder.
Rectangular mode is usually fastest for a section of a webpage or app. Freeform mode is useful when the exact shape matters. Window mode avoids manually trimming borders, while full-screen mode captures every display area visible to Windows. Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance states that captures are copied to the Snipping Tool window and can be edited, saved, or shared; it also describes automatic saving to the Screenshots folder on current Windows versions.

Clipboard versus saved file
Windows+Shift+S, PrtScn, and Alt+PrtScn are primarily clipboard workflows. Open Paint, Word, an email, a chat, or an image editor and press Ctrl+V. If you need a permanent file, open the Snipping Tool notification and use Save as, or use Windows+PrtScn for an immediate full-screen file.
Save a full-screen screenshot instantly
Press Windows+PrtScn together. The display may briefly dim, and Windows writes the image to PicturesScreenshots for your user account. Open File Explorer with Windows+E, select Pictures, then Screenshots. This is the shortest route when you do not need to select or edit anything.
If the folder is redirected to OneDrive or another location, use File Explorer search for Screenshot or check the folder’s location in its properties. The shortcut still uses Windows’ configured Pictures location.

Copy the entire screen or one window
Entire screen to the clipboard
Press PrtScn once. Nothing may appear to happen because the image is waiting in the clipboard. Switch to the destination app and press Ctrl+V. This captures the complete desktop view, including other visible monitors or windows according to your Windows display configuration.

Click the window you want so it has focus, then press Alt+PrtScn. Paste with Ctrl+V. This is useful for documenting an error dialog or a single application without exposing the rest of the desktop.
Understand Snipping Tool’s four modes
- Rectangular snip: drag a rectangle around the exact area.
- Freeform snip: draw an irregular outline.
- Window snip: select one open application window.
- Full-screen snip: capture the complete display.
After a capture, Snipping Tool provides basic annotation and cropping tools, plus copy, share, and save commands. Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs may expose newer optional functions such as Perfect Screenshot and Color picker; neither is required for ordinary screenshots.

When the Print Screen key is missing or behaves differently
Keyboard layouts vary. On some laptops, PrtScn is a secondary function labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or similar, so hold Fn while pressing it. Microsoft documents Fn+Windows+Space as an alternative on devices without a dedicated Print Screen key. If you prefer the key to open the snipping overlay, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and enable the option that uses the Print Screen key to open screen snipping. The exact wording can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11 updates; Windows+Shift+S remains the consistent built-in path.
Practical capture checklist
- Close or minimize private notifications, password managers, and unrelated windows before capturing.
- For a webpage, zoom to a readable level and scroll to the portion you need; the shortcut captures only what is currently visible.
- Use window mode for clean app documentation and rectangular mode for a small detail.
- Paste a clipboard capture somewhere immediately if you may overwrite the clipboard with another copy operation.
- Use descriptive filenames and a known folder when screenshots will become bug reports or project assets.
Troubleshooting common failures
The shortcut does nothing
Press the keys simultaneously rather than holding them for several seconds. Confirm that the Windows key is not disabled by a gaming-mode utility. Try launching Snipping Tool from Start and selecting New. Restarting the app or Windows can clear a temporarily stuck capture process.
PrtScn copied an image, but I cannot see it
That shortcut does not automatically open a window. Click inside Paint, an office document, email, or chat and press Ctrl+V. If pasting fails, take another capture and test in Paint to determine whether the destination app blocks images.

Only Windows+PrtScn is designed to save directly there. A PrtScn or Alt+PrtScn capture is in the clipboard, while a Windows+Shift+S capture may need Save as. Check OneDrive’s Pictures folder if known-folder backup is enabled.
A laptop captures the wrong thing
Try the hardware’s Fn modifier, then test Windows+Shift+S, which does not require the Print Screen key. Function-row behavior is controlled by the laptop manufacturer and firmware.
The page is longer than the screenshot
Windows’ built-in shortcuts capture the visible display, not an entire scrolling webpage. Capture several sections, use a browser’s own full-page feature if available, or use the automated webpage method below.
