Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe easiest shortcut depends on your laptop’s operating system. On Windows, press Windows+Shift+S to select an area, or Windows+PrtScn to save the entire screen. On a Mac, use Shift-Command-3 for the full screen or Shift-Command-4 for a selection. On a Chromebook, press the Screenshot key or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows. The default save folder is different on each system.
Choose your laptop system first
| Laptop system | Quickest useful shortcut | Best for | Default location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 | Windows+Shift+S | Selecting a region or choosing a capture mode | For a full-screen file made with Windows+PrtScn: Pictures > Screenshots |
| macOS | Shift-Command-3 (full screen) or Shift-Command-4 (region) | Fast keyboard captures | Desktop by default |
| ChromeOS | Screenshot key or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows | Full, partial, or window captures | Downloads by default |
These shortcuts are not interchangeable. Laptop keyboard layouts, accessibility settings, and remapped keys can change how a combination behaves. If a shortcut does nothing, open the built-in screen-capture utility from Start, Quick Settings, or the system menu instead.
How to screenshot on a Windows laptop
Capture part of the screen with Windows+Shift+S
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- When the Snipping Tool controls appear, choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular capture, drag across the area and release.
- Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool, then choose Save if you need a file.
This shortcut opens capture controls; it does not promise that every image is automatically saved to the same folder. You can also search for and open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, select New, and choose a capture mode.
Microsoft documents the current Snipping Tool workflow at Use Snipping Tool to capture screenshots.

Save the entire screen immediately with Windows+PrtScn
Press Windows+PrtScn. Windows captures all visible displays and saves the image in Pictures > Screenshots. Open File Explorer and browse to that folder if you do not see a notification.
On some keyboards the key is labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen. A standalone PrtScn may copy the screen to the clipboard or open screen snipping, depending on Windows settings. Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut reference explains these variations: Windows keyboard shortcuts.
Copy a Windows screenshot instead of saving it
After a Snipping Tool capture, use the editor’s copy control or press Ctrl+C, then paste with Ctrl+V into an email, document, chat, or image editor. This is useful when you need to send the image immediately and do not need a permanent file.
How to screenshot a MacBook or other Mac laptop
Capture the full screen
Press Shift-Command-3. macOS saves a PNG screenshot to the desktop by default.
Capture a selected area
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- When the crosshair appears, drag over the area you want.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button to capture it.
Capture one window
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press the Space bar to switch to window capture.
- Click the window.
Use the Screenshot control panel
Press Shift-Command-5 to open on-screen controls. You can select the entire screen, a window, or a portion; set a timer; and choose a different save location. This is the best option when you want settings rather than a one-step capture.

How to screenshot only part of a laptop screen
- Windows: press Windows+Shift+S and drag a rectangular or freeform snip.
- Mac: press Shift-Command-4 and drag the crosshair; press Space after the shortcut if you want one window.
- Chromebook: open the Screenshot controls with the Screenshot key or Shift+Ctrl+Show windows, then choose partial capture.
Selected-area capture is usually better than a full-screen image when you are sharing an error message, form, chart, or a single application. Include enough surrounding context that the recipient can understand what they are seeing, but remove passwords, private messages, tokens, and other sensitive data before sharing.
Where laptop screenshots save
- Windows: Windows+PrtScn uses Pictures > Screenshots. A Windows+Shift+S snip is available through its notification/editor and must be saved if you want a file.
- Mac: the desktop by default; Shift-Command-5 can change the destination.
- Chromebook: Downloads by default; Screen Capture settings can change it.
If you cannot find an image, search your file manager for files created today and check whether the shortcut copied the image to the clipboard instead of saving it.
Paste a screenshot into an app
- Take a clipboard-style capture: use the capture tool’s copy command, add Control to a Mac shortcut, or use the Chromebook capture, which is automatically copied to the clipboard.
- Open the destination app.
- Place the cursor where the image should go.
- Press Ctrl+V on Windows or Chromebook, or Command+V on Mac.
If pasting fails, save the screenshot as a file and insert it through the app’s Attach, Insert image, or Upload command.

When the shortcut does not work
The keyboard has no Print Screen or Screenshot key
Use Windows+Shift+S, open Snipping Tool from Start, open ChromeOS Quick Settings, or press Shift-Command-5 on Mac. These interfaces do not require a dedicated key.

A function-key layer is interfering
Some laptop keyboards require holding Fn with a key that shares another function. Try the documented shortcut with Fn only when the key labeling or manufacturer layout indicates it. An external keyboard may also map keys differently.
Nothing is saved
Check whether the capture was copied to the clipboard, whether a save notification is waiting, and whether the default folder has changed. On Windows, verify Pictures > Screenshots; on Mac, check the desktop and Screenshot settings; on Chromebook, check Downloads.
A protected window appears black or refuses capture
Some applications deliberately restrict screenshots, particularly protected video. Use the application’s own export or sharing feature where permitted. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.

It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server works with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients through take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
