EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard 20.1.0, released January 8, 2026, added a fragmented-data recovery function for FAT32, exFAT and RAW data. EaseUS calls the engine SmartSector Rebuild (SSR). It is designed to reconstruct files whose data is split across non-contiguous storage blocks—one possible reason recovered photos appear corrupted or videos play as black screens.
The capability is a software-based recovery option, not a guarantee. EaseUS says its optimized algorithm improves fragmented-file recovery success by 30%, but the company does not publish the sample, baseline, test conditions or independent validation behind that figure.
What changed in Data Recovery Wizard 20.1.0?
EaseUS says version 20.1.0 introduced fragmented-data recovery for FAT32, exFAT and RAW scenarios. Its SSR engine analyzes residual file metadata and the physical adjacency of data blocks, then attempts to identify and reassemble file fragments whose original cluster chains are lost.
That description comes from EaseUS. The available product material does not provide an independent technical analysis or a reproducible test protocol, so SSR should be understood as a vendor-described feature rather than a verified industry benchmark.

20.1.0 is not the current release
EaseUS dates 20.1.0 to January 8, 2026. Its editions history lists later releases through version 20.8.0 in September 2026. The fragmented-recovery technology was introduced in 20.1.0, but that version should not be described as the latest Data Recovery Wizard release.
What “fragmented recovery” means
A file is fragmented when its contents occupy multiple non-adjacent clusters on a storage device. If deletion, formatting or filesystem damage removes the information that links those clusters, a conventional scan may find pieces without reconstructing a usable file.

This can produce familiar symptoms:
- Photos that open with errors, show partial images or contain missing sections.
- Videos that are detected but play with a black screen, no picture or broken playback.
- Files with plausible names but incorrect sizes or unusable contents.
SSR is intended to infer the missing relationships by examining remaining metadata and where data blocks sit on the medium. It may help when the storage surface still contains enough of the original content, but it cannot recreate bytes that have been overwritten or never remain readable.

How to try recovery without making the loss worse
- Stop writing to the affected device. Do not take more photos, copy files onto the USB drive or install recovery software on the same volume. New writes can overwrite fragments that recovery needs.
- Connect the device and select its location. In Data Recovery Wizard, choose the relevant drive, card or volume rather than a known folder if the filesystem is damaged or the device is shown as RAW.
- Run the scan. Allow the scan to search for lost data. A heavily used or damaged device may take substantial time, and disconnecting it can interrupt the process.
- Preview candidate files. Use the preview function to check whether photos display correctly or videos show usable frames. A filename or thumbnail alone is not proof that the full file is intact.
- Recover selected files to another healthy location. Save recovered data to a different drive. Writing results back to the source can overwrite other recoverable fragments.
What does EaseUS’s “30% improvement” claim mean?
EaseUS’s feature page says its optimized algorithm boosts fragmented-file recovery success by 30%. This is a company claim from its 2025/2026 product announcement, not an independently established statistic. The page does not state the number or type of test files, the comparison baseline, the definition of “success,” the filesystem mix or whether the result was independently reproduced.
Use the figure as a reason to try the feature when ordinary recovery results are fragmented—not as a probability that 30% more of your own files will be restored. Actual results depend on the device, filesystem, time since deletion or formatting, overwriting, fragmentation pattern and physical readability.

Can it recover files after formatting a USB drive or SD card?
Formatting can remove or replace filesystem structures while leaving some file content on the medium. SSR is specifically described for fragmented scenarios and for devices that have undergone repeated read/write operations or formatting. EaseUS’s own wording says: “We can use fragment reconstruction technology to piece together damaged photos and black-screen videos, enabling devices that have undergone multiple read/write operations or formatting to recover their original data.”
That statement describes an intended use case, not a guarantee that every formatted file can be restored. Stop using the device immediately, scan it from another installation if possible, preview results and save anything recovered elsewhere.

What if the hard drive is physically damaged?
Software recovery is not a substitute for repairing a failed storage device. EaseUS’s product FAQ says physically damaged devices are outside the scope of software recovery and that recovery success is not guaranteed.
- Do not repeatedly power-cycle a drive making unusual mechanical noises.
- Do not open a hard-drive enclosure in a normal room or attempt an internal repair.
- For valuable data, consider a professional data-recovery service before further use.
If the device is still stably readable, software may be able to scan logical loss such as deletion, formatting or filesystem problems. Physical failure, intermittent disconnection and unreadable sectors can prevent a scan from completing or produce incomplete files.
When is Data Recovery Wizard 20.1.0 worth trying?
- Reasonable case: the device is detected consistently, the loss followed deletion or formatting, and the data has not been overwritten.
- Use caution: the volume appears RAW, scans are slow or files preview only partially. These signs indicate uncertainty, not automatic failure.
- Escalate: the device is not detected, disconnects repeatedly, reports severe errors or shows physical symptoms. Continued scanning can reduce options for specialist recovery.
There is no evidence in the cited material that SSR guarantees recovery, works on every fragmented file or outperforms competing products under independently controlled conditions. Its practical value is that it gives users another software approach for fragmented FAT32, exFAT and RAW data before they decide whether professional help is necessary.
