The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027, honoring eligible films from 2026. In an Associated Press awards-season survey published September 4, 2026, The Odyssey, Dune: Part III and Digger were among the early titles to watch—not official nominees or a complete contender list. Their connection to open-source software is not established; the clearer link is institutional, through the Academy Software Foundation and the tools it supports.

An Associated Press survey dated September 4, 2026, included The Odyssey, Dune: Part III and Digger in its early awards-season landscape. These are examples of films being watched in the early race, not formal Academy designations. The AP noted that substantial films were still to come, so the list is neither exhaustive nor a settled ranking. Read the AP’s early-season survey.
At this stage, keep awards-season attention separate from official status: a film discussed as an early possibility is not thereby confirmed as eligible, shortlisted or nominated. The Academy’s formal stages determine those distinctions.

What is the Academy’s connection to open-source software?
The connection is the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF), a collaboration between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Linux Foundation. It provides a neutral home where developers in film and media can share resources and work together on technology for image creation, visual effects, animation and sound. The Foundation connects the Academy to open-source filmmaking infrastructure; it does not mean that competitive Oscars categories judge software or that a particular awards-season film used a Foundation project.
Which open-source tools illustrate the film-production ecosystem?
OpenImageIO
OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing and manipulating image files, with applications in visual effects and animation. Such tools can support production workflows without being visible to audiences as a distinct part of a film.
OpenRV
OpenRV is an open-source media review and playback tool. It illustrates how software used to inspect and review media can be part of the wider production ecosystem.
Open projects alongside commercial software
The Foundation describes renderer integrations and projects involving Pixar RenderMan, Autodesk Arnold, Blender Cycles and other renderers. This is an ecosystem in which open-source projects can work alongside commercial software; an integration does not make every connected product open source.

Does that mean these early contenders were made with open-source software?
No film-specific production credits in the available reporting establish which tools, if any, were used on The Odyssey, Dune: Part III or Digger. The Foundation’s projects and their industry relevance are not proof of use on any named film. Without reliable credits or film-specific reporting, assigning Blender, OpenImageIO, OpenRV or another tool to a contender would be speculation.
It helps to keep two questions distinct: where a film stands in the awards season, and what software its production used. Evidence for one does not establish the other.

What does the film Flow show?
Flow, winner of the Academy Award for Animated Feature at the 2025 ceremony, was made entirely with Blender, according to the Academy Software Foundation. Blender is an open-source 3D creation suite. This is a concrete example of an Academy-winning feature made with open-source software—not evidence about the software used for films in the 2026 film year. The Foundation’s account of Flow and Blender.

The Academy said it was investigating six scientific and technical areas for 2026 awards consideration, including audio spectrum segmentation and editing software. An investigation of technical areas is not a list of nominations or confirmation that awards will be given. It is also separate from nominations for film categories such as Best Picture or Animated Feature. The Academy’s announcement.
