JBL says its Live Flex 3 case can manage playback and calls directly. A smartwatch may suit you if you already own a compatible watch, phone, and earbuds; Samsung’s documented Galaxy Watch setup, for example, requires an LTE watch for call audio on earbuds. Your existing devices and the controls you need matter more than any universal winner.
What each option lets you control
Earbuds with a touchscreen case
The screen is built into the earbud charging case, so you can use the case interface for listed controls. JBL says the Live Flex 3’s 1.45-inch touchscreen can play, pause, or skip tracks and accept, reject, or mute calls. JBL also says the case can adjust sound settings without opening the phone app. These are the manufacturer’s stated features, not a comparative usability test. JBL Live Flex 3 product details.
JBL’s Tour Pro 3 is another example: its product page describes a touchscreen Smart Charging Case with playback and call-management controls. The available product descriptions do not establish which of the two models is better for a particular user. JBL Tour Pro 3 product details.
A smartwatch paired with earbuds
A smartwatch is a separate wearable interface rather than a screen on the charging case. Samsung says Samsung earbuds connected to a Galaxy Watch can be used to listen to music and manage calls from the watch. However, Samsung specifies that phone-call conversation audio on earbuds is available only with LTE Galaxy Watch models. Check the exact watch and connection setup before relying on this for calls. Check whether your earbuds already do enough
You may not need either a screen case or a smartwatch for common actions. Microsoft documents Surface Earbuds gestures for play or pause, next or previous track, and volume, as well as double-tap to answer or end a phone call. Music gestures work only with supported apps, and calls require the earbuds to be connected to an iPhone or Android phone. Microsoft Surface Earbuds controls.
Xiaomi’s REDMI Buds 6 Active provide another example of model-specific touch controls: the support page lists double-tap playback and call actions, plus triple-tap track skipping or call rejection. If you already own a compatible watch and earbuds, using the watch may avoid choosing a new earbud case just for controls. If you want controls built into the earbud case, a screen-case model is the more direct type of option. Those are practical distinctions based on where the interface sits—not evidence that one is faster, easier, or more reliable.

The cited manufacturer and support pages describe capabilities, but do not compare response speed, reliability, call quality, comfort, battery impact, or price across these approaches. They also do not establish that a smartwatch from one brand will control earbuds from another. For those factors, check documentation for your exact products and consult relevant independent reviews rather than assuming one approach performs better.
