For a Raspberry Pi photo frame that changes pictures regularly and should show natural color, choose an LCD. Choose color e-paper when the frame will display the same image for a long time and you value a reflective, paper-like look and an image that remains visible after display power is cut. E-paper’s slow refresh and restricted palette make it a poor fit for slideshows; LCD is the more practical default for most conventional photo-frame use.

What matters most when choosing a display

The choice is not simply whether a screen is labeled “e-paper” or “LCD.” For a photo frame, weigh how the pictures will look, how often they change, whether the image should remain visible when the display is unpowered, and whether the exact panel works with your Raspberry Pi. Resolution and physical size matter too, but a larger or higher-resolution screen cannot remove the underlying difference between full-color LCD rendering and a limited-color e-paper panel.

The examples below are product-specific specifications and published observations, not a controlled test of every panel. The available information does not establish a universal color-accuracy score, a whole-frame electricity comparison, or a single result that applies to every Raspberry Pi and display combination.

Quick decision guide

  • Pick LCD if you want a familiar, full-color presentation, intend to change pictures often, or want a slideshow-like experience.
  • Consider color e-paper if the picture can remain unchanged for hours or days, you like its reflective appearance, and it is useful for the image to persist without display power.
  • Check the specific product before buying if you have a particular Pi model, case, panel size, or resolution in mind. Connector and host compatibility vary.

How the pictures look: full color versus a limited palette

An LCD can display a broad range of colors in the source photograph. Raspberry Pi’s original Touch Display and Touch Display 2 both specify 24-bit RGB, a conventional full-color approach. That makes an LCD the stronger choice for photographs with subtle gradients, skin tones, detailed shadows, or colors that should remain close to the original image.

Color e-paper works differently. Pimoroni’s Inky Impression variants use six or seven primary colors, with dithering to suggest intermediate shades. Dithering arranges available colors in a pattern that can create the impression of additional tones from a normal viewing distance; it does not give the panel the same continuous color reproduction as an LCD. A photograph can therefore look more stylized, grainy, or poster-like than it does on a phone or computer screen.

The effect depends on the picture. Bold images with a limited palette can suit e-paper well. A photograph whose appeal depends on smooth color transitions or fine tonal detail is less likely to look as intended. Pimoroni’s guidance suggests increasing contrast and saturation for some images, but this is an image-preparation adjustment rather than a way to recover colors the panel cannot display.

Match image style to display

  • LCD is a better fit for: family photos with subtle tones, landscapes with smooth skies, pictures where natural color matters, and collections that mix many different photographic styles.
  • E-paper may suit: high-contrast images, illustrations, or photographs whose main shapes and colors remain clear when rendered with a small palette.
  • Preview before committing: if a particular image is important, convert or preview it using the software and palette intended for the selected panel. A product’s color count alone cannot tell you how that photograph will appear.

Refresh speed and the frame’s update schedule

E-paper is designed around a very different update experience from an LCD. Refreshing a color e-paper image can take tens of seconds and may visibly flash. Pimoroni describes flashing during refresh, and Waveshare says flicker during a full refresh is normal. That makes e-paper suitable for displaying a still picture, not for smooth transitions or frequent picture changes.

The published figures illustrate why the exact model matters: a Raspberry Pi Official Magazine review reports that the 7.3-inch Inky Frame typically takes 25–30 seconds to refresh. Waveshare specifies a 30-second full refresh for its 9.7-inch color e-paper HAT+. Those are figures for named products, not a universal benchmark for all e-paper screens. LCD is the straightforward choice when you expect the frame to cycle through photos during everyday viewing.

Think through the update pattern

  • One picture for a long time: e-paper’s refresh delay is less intrusive if the screen changes only occasionally.
  • Several picture changes in a session: the delay and flashing can become part of the viewing experience; LCD is better suited to this use.
  • Automatic or network-driven updates: the Raspberry Pi still needs to retrieve, process, and send the new image. E-paper’s ability to retain a displayed picture does not make the controller unnecessary.

Power: separate the panel from the complete frame

E-paper can retain its displayed image after power is removed and generally uses display power during refresh. This can be useful if you want a still image to remain visible while the panel is not being powered. It is not the same as saying that an entire Raspberry Pi photo frame uses no power: the Pi and any networking or storage continue to have their own requirements when active.

For a concrete LCD reference, Raspberry Pi lists the original Touch Display at 200 mA at 5 V typical at maximum brightness. That is a specification for the display under that stated condition, not a measurement of a whole frame. Waveshare lists refresh power under 0.6 W for its 9.7-inch e-paper HAT+, and cautions that actual refresh time and power can vary with conditions. The values describe different products and operating circumstances, so they should not be treated as a direct, like-for-like energy test.

No comparable controlled measurements establish total Raspberry Pi system power for the cited LCD and e-paper examples. A meaningful comparison for your build would need to account for the exact Pi, display, brightness or refresh schedule, and other attached components. Do not infer a universal power-saving percentage from a display-only specification or an e-paper refresh figure.

Resolution, size, and the documented examples

The table compares the published specifications for the named display examples. Screen size and pixel dimensions help you judge fit and detail, but they do not make LCD and e-paper pictures visually equivalent.

Display example Published size and resolution Color and refresh information Practical consideration
Raspberry Pi Touch Display (original) 800 × 480 pixels 24-bit RGB; 250 cd/m² average brightness; 200 mA at 5 V typical at maximum brightness Official full-color LCD example. The current and brightness figures are display specifications, not whole-frame measurements.
Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 5- and 7-inch models: 720 × 1280 pixels; 10-inch model: 1200 × 1920 pixels 24-bit RGB Official LCD family; connection and compatibility details vary by model and Raspberry Pi.
Pimoroni Inky Impression Varies by model; see product-family examples below Six- or seven-color variants; intermediate shades are dithered; image persists after display power is cut Useful for occasional still-image changes when power-off image retention matters; expect limited photographic color.
Pimoroni Inky Frame, 7.3-inch example 800 × 480 pixels Seven-color e-paper; typically 25–30 seconds to refresh, according to a Raspberry Pi Official Magazine review The dimensions match the original Touch Display’s pixel count, but the color technology and refresh experience differ.
Waveshare 9.7-inch E Ink Spectra 6 HAT+ 1120 × 784 pixels 30-second full refresh; refresh power under 0.6 W, with actual values varying by conditions according to the vendor Color e-paper HAT designed for a 40-pin GPIO interface; check physical fit and your Pi’s compatibility.

Pimoroni lists the Inky Frame family at 640 × 400 pixels for 4 inches, 600 × 448 for 5.7 inches, and 800 × 480 for 7.3 inches. These dimensions can help you choose an image canvas, but resolution is only one part of the decision. The 7.3-inch e-paper example and original 800 × 480 LCD have equal pixel dimensions yet use different display technologies; the e-paper’s limited palette and long refresh remain relevant.

Check Raspberry Pi compatibility before selecting a panel

Do not assume that a display will connect to every Raspberry Pi just because it is sold for Raspberry Pi projects. Confirm the exact Pi model, display variant, cable or connector, interface, and software support. Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 cable variants differ between Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi 4 or earlier. The cited Waveshare HAT+ is designed for a 40-pin GPIO interface, which is a different connection consideration from a display using another connector.

Compatibility checklist

  • Host Pi: verify the display manufacturer’s support for the specific Raspberry Pi model you own.
  • Interface and cable: identify whether the display uses GPIO, DSI, or another connection, and check the cable or connector variant required by your host.
  • Physical space: check panel dimensions, the Pi’s position behind the screen, and clearance for cables and any enclosure. Pimoroni notes that its Pi occupies space behind the Inky Impression panel.
  • Software path: check the product’s current setup guidance for the operating system and image-driving software you plan to use.
  • Orientation and aspect ratio: decide how the panel will be mounted and whether the source images need rotating or cropping.

Compatibility is model-specific and can change as products and software are updated. The product specifications establish the connection details for the cited examples; they do not establish that every variant works with every Pi or enclosure.

Prepare photographs for the panel

Start with the display’s native pixel dimensions. Resizing an image to match the selected panel avoids asking the display software to handle an unnecessarily large image and helps you control which part of a photograph remains visible. Pimoroni’s Inky Frame guide demonstrates resizing and discusses cropping versus stretching.

  1. Find the panel’s native resolution and orientation. Use the specification for your exact display, not a similarly named model. For example, the 7.3-inch Inky Frame is 800 × 480, while the Inky Frame family also includes 640 × 400 and 600 × 448 examples.
  2. Choose how to fit the photo. Crop to fill the screen when preserving the image’s proportions matters more than retaining every edge. Stretching can fill the panel without cropping, but it alters the photograph’s proportions.
  3. For e-paper, assess the palette. Preview the image after conversion to the panel’s six- or seven-color palette, as applicable. Expect dithering for intermediate shades and make contrast or saturation adjustments only where they improve the specific picture.
  4. Test representative images. A single image that works well does not show how an entire varied photo collection will look. Check the kinds of photographs you plan to display before preparing the full set.
  5. Allow for the actual refresh behavior. Test the update process on the intended panel and avoid designing an e-paper frame around frequent changes.

Choosing a build that suits your use

For a traditional rotating photo frame

Choose an LCD if the aim is to browse a collection, cycle between photographs, or preserve the colors and gradients of ordinary digital photos. A full-color LCD avoids the e-paper palette limitation and does not impose the documented tens-of-seconds refresh behavior of the cited e-paper examples. Select the exact size and resolution based on where the frame will be viewed, then confirm the Pi and cable compatibility for that model.

For a low-change, always-on display style

Consider e-paper if you intend to leave one photograph displayed for a long time and prefer its reflective appearance. The image can remain visible after display power is cut, but updating it means accepting a slow refresh and possible flashing. The Raspberry Pi remains responsible for producing and sending a new image when you choose to change it.

For a carefully curated image

E-paper may be a reasonable choice when the frame displays a small number of carefully selected pictures that suit the panel’s palette. Prepare and preview those images at the screen’s native resolution. If you need a single display to handle many unpredictable photographs faithfully, LCD is the safer choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common selection mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by resolution alone: equal pixel dimensions do not mean equal color reproduction or update speed.
  • Assuming all color e-paper is alike: the cited examples include different sizes, resolutions, color counts, refresh behavior, and connection designs.
  • Treating a panel specification as a whole-system result: the Pi and attached components contribute to frame power use.
  • Expecting a slideshow from a slow-refresh panel: cited e-paper models take about 25–30 seconds for a refresh, and flashing can be visible.
  • Stretching photos without checking proportions: use cropping when you want to fill the display without distorting the subject.
  • Ignoring the enclosure: the Pi and its cable need physical clearance behind the display; confirm dimensions for the exact panel and case.

Verdict

For most Raspberry Pi digital photo frames, LCD is the more practical display because it handles conventional full-color photographs and frequent changes better. Color e-paper is a specialized alternative for a still image that changes rarely, especially when the image should remain visible after display power is removed. Make the final choice using the exact panel’s palette, resolution, refresh behavior, connection requirements, and the way you plan to display photographs.
