Dynatron rates it for up to 400 W at 41 °C ambient, and ServeTheHome’s test with one AmpereOne CPU recorded about 71 °C after seven minutes of full utilization. The trade-off is noise: the reviewer measured 59 dBA at full load from one metre.
What the Dynatron W23 is designed for
The W23 targets AmpereOne LGA5964 systems in 3U-and-taller server applications. Its rated capacity is up to 400 W at 41 °C ambient, according to Dynatron’s product specifications. That rating is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that every processor will run at the same temperature: results also depend on the chassis airflow, ambient conditions and CPU model.
The cooler measures 126.8 × 93.5 × 105 mm. Its aluminum-and-copper heatsink uses heat pipes and comes with pre-applied thermal interface material. An 80 × 80 × 38 mm double-ball-bearing fan supplies active cooling. Dynatron lists a 70,000-hour fan life.
Cooling and noise in testing
ServeTheHome tested the W23 with an AmpereOne A192-32X. Package temperature was about 49 °C at idle and stabilized around 71 °C after seven minutes at 100% utilization. Those figures describe that CPU and test setup; they should not be treated as expected temperatures for every AmpereOne system. The review reports the cooler worked with the ASRock Rack AMPONED8-2T BCM’s default PWM fan profile. ServeTheHome’s installation and motherboard coverage provides the context for that fit.

Noise is more consequential if the server will be near people. ServeTheHome measured about 36 dBA at idle and 59 dBA at full load from one metre; its studio’s noise floor was 34 dBA. Dynatron’s maximum specified noise is 64.4 dBA, with fan speed ranging from 2,400 RPM at 0–20% duty to 8,000 RPM at 100% duty. Maximum specified airflow is 115.61 CFM. The reviewer also notes the fan can exceed 24 W at full duty. The W23 test report contains the measurements and test context.
Fit and installation
ServeTheHome found the W23 narrow enough to clear memory around the AmpereOne socket on the tested board. Its base has five thermal contact points: a raised center for the CPU die and four surrounding points for the memory and PCIe controller heat spreader.

Installation uses four mounting screws for the cooler, two screws for the fan and one 4-pin PWM connection to the motherboard. Verify the exact board, chassis clearance and surrounding components before ordering; compatibility with one board does not establish fit in every LGA5964 system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the W23 the right cooler?
- Consider it for an AmpereOne LGA5964 build with at least 3U of cooler height where active cooling, rated power capacity and socket-area clearance are priorities.
- Plan for noise if the server will operate in a home office or other quiet space. Full-load acoustics in the reviewed setup were closer to server-fan levels than quiet desktop-cooler levels.
- Check other options if the chassis is shorter than 3U, if silence is a priority, or if your board and airflow arrangement differ from the reviewed configuration. Dynatron’s W20, W21, W22 and W24 serve different height and cooling needs; confirm each model’s current specifications rather than assuming they share W23’s fit or performance.
ServeTheHome selected the W23 for the AMPONED8-2T BCM in part because AmpereOne had fewer cooler options than Ampere Altra and an active cooler was easier to integrate. Its reviewer summed up the result: “There is not too much to say here other than this worked, and it was one of the only options out there.” That is a useful endorsement of practicality, not a claim that the W23 is quiet or universally compatible.
