To automatically create a directory for each claim, administrators can evaluate the separate upstream nfs-subdir-external-provisioner project. It is not a built-in Red Hat provisioner, and the available documentation does not establish that it is supported or compatible with every OpenShift deployment.
What OpenShift documents for NFS storage
OpenShift Container Platform 4.22 documents NFS-backed persistent storage using PV and PVC resources that refer to an existing NFS server and export path. The cluster administrator prepares the backing NFS storage and export; a PV represents that storage in the cluster, and a PVC lets a workload request it. This separates storage configuration from the Pod specification. See Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform 4.22 storage documentation.
A PVC by itself does not create an NFS server, export, or additional physical capacity. Those remain responsibilities of the backing NFS infrastructure, including its availability, network access, permissions, and any capacity controls.
What dynamic NFS provisioning means
Dynamic provisioning can automate storage work after a claim is submitted. The upstream Kubernetes SIGs project nfs-subdir-external-provisioner describes itself as a “Dynamic sub-dir volume provisioner on a remote NFS server.” It can create subdirectories for claims on a remote NFS server and manage associated Kubernetes storage resources through a provisioner and StorageClass.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
This is an additional software component, not a built-in Red Hat NFS provisioner. The project documentation outlines deployment and OpenShift authorization steps, but neither that repository nor the cited OpenShift 4.22 storage chapter establishes a universal support or compatibility guarantee. Confirm eligibility and compatibility for the exact cluster release and organizational support policy before adopting it.
Static NFS PVs and an external provisioner compared
| Consideration | PV/PVC referencing an existing export | External subdirectory provisioner |
|---|---|---|
| What the administrator prepares | An NFS server and export path, plus PV and PVC resources that reference them, as documented by Red Hat for OpenShift 4.22. | An existing remote NFS server/export, provisioner deployment, OpenShift authorization, and a StorageClass, as described in the upstream project documentation. |
| Claim workflow | A claim uses storage represented by the configured PV; the documented workflow does not create a per-claim NFS directory. | A claim using the provisioner’s StorageClass can trigger directory provisioning on the existing export. |
| NFS infrastructure and capacity | Remain on the NFS side; a PVC does not create server capacity. | Also remain on the NFS side; directory automation does not create server capacity or, by itself, establish quota enforcement. |
| Lifecycle, security, and support ownership | Administrators manage PV/PVC setup and should verify permissions, recovery, and operational ownership. | Administrators must assess directory and reclaim behavior, RBAC and security context, export permissions, recovery, compatibility, and who supports the external component. The cited documentation does not settle these details for every deployment. |
How to evaluate dynamic subdirectory provisioning
- Confirm version and policy. Identify the exact OpenShift release and determine whether your organization permits an upstream community provisioner in that cluster. Do not assume the upstream project is covered by Red Hat support.
- Prepare the NFS side. Verify that the server and export exist, are reachable from cluster nodes, and grant the access required by the provisioner and workloads under your intended security model. Decide how capacity limits will be enforced; directory creation alone does not prove that quotas are configured.
- Review the project deployment instructions. Follow the current manifests and OpenShift authorization guidance in the upstream repository. Inspect permissions, RBAC, security-context requirements, and the effects of granting the provisioner access to the export before applying manifests with
ocorkubectl. - Configure and exercise the StorageClass. Ensure it selects the deployed provisioner, then create a test PVC that names that class. Confirm that the expected PV and directory are created on the existing export; this workflow automates storage allocation on that export, not NFS infrastructure creation.
- Test operational behavior before workloads depend on it. In a non-production namespace, verify mounts and write permissions, reclaim and deletion behavior, backup and recovery procedures, and how applications behave if the NFS server or network is unavailable.
- Compare supported alternatives if required. If your use case requires a vendor-supported dynamic storage interface, assess an NFS CSI driver or storage-vendor integration against your exact OpenShift release and support policy. The cited sources do not verify a specific driver’s compatibility or endorsement.
Security and platform limitations to check
Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform 4.22 storage documentation states: “The in-tree NFS provisioner does not support user namespaces.” Treat this as a specific limitation of the documented in-tree NFS provisioner, not as evidence that an external provisioner removes the limitation or is automatically a supported substitute. Validate the security-context and export-permission behavior of the actual design.
