For a 3D movie stored on a Blu-ray disc, you need a Blu-ray-capable drive and software that can recognize and retain the disc’s MVC 3D video track. A DVD ripper cannot read a Blu-ray source. If you want the disc’s video streams unchanged, use a remux workflow; if you want a smaller, newly encoded file, use a transcoder and expect the video to be converted.
What the difference means for a 3D movie
A DVD ripper is suitable for DVD input; a Blu-ray ripper is needed to read Blu-ray discs. The source format and the drive both matter: software cannot make a DVD-only optical drive read a Blu-ray disc.
Blu-ray 3D uses an expandable video track: an MPEG-4 AVC stream provides the left-eye, 2D view, while a child MPEG-4 MVC stream supplies right-eye data. MakeMKV’s Blu-ray 3D FAQ explains that the MVC child track must be selected to retain 3D. If an output contains only the AVC stream, it represents the left-eye view rather than the full stereoscopic presentation.
MVC is the disc’s native 3D representation. Side-by-side and top-and-bottom are alternative output formats that a playback device can generate from the AVC/MVC streams; they are not the native Blu-ray 3D storage format.

Choose a workflow based on what you want to keep

Remuxing and transcoding are not the same
Remux: retain the disc’s video streams
MakeMKV says its software transfers an “exact, lossless copy” of disc content into an MKV container. Its general FAQ says it does not change or compress video, while noting exceptions for some audio options. MKV can contain multiple audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, and MVC. For 3D, that preservation depends on selecting the MVC child track; using a lossless workflow alone does not guarantee the desired 3D track is in the output.
Transcode: create a newly encoded video
HandBrake is a converter, not a direct unchanged-stream copier. Its version 1.8.0 documentation says video is always converted. A transcode can be useful when your aim is a newly encoded, potentially smaller file, but it changes the video and should not be described as lossless. Check the output and your player’s 3D support before relying on it for stereoscopic playback.

Check the hardware and software before starting
- Identify the disc. If the movie is on Blu-ray 3D, the computer needs an optical drive capable of reading Blu-ray, not just DVD.
- Confirm the software supports the source. MakeMKV documents Blu-ray 3D handling; HandBrake documents DVD and Blu-ray input types, but its role is conversion, not an unchanged copy.
- Inspect the detected video tracks. For Blu-ray 3D in MakeMKV, select the primary AVC track and its MVC child track to retain the left- and right-eye data.
- Choose the output for your playback setup. Decide whether you need an MVC-containing MKV or a derived presentation format such as side-by-side or top-and-bottom, then verify that your player and display can use it.
The cited documentation establishes general input and format behavior, not compatibility for every drive model, operating system, player, or display. Check the specifications of the hardware and software you plan to use.

Software capability does not determine whether copying a disc is lawful. HandBrake says it does not defeat copy protection and does not work with many protected commercial DVDs and Blu-rays; it advises users uncertain about their rights to contact a legal adviser.

In the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office’s 37 CFR § 201.40 lists exemptions for defined uses, including certain short clips for criticism, comment, or educational uses; specified accessibility work by educational institutions; and limited preservation or replacement by qualifying libraries, archives, or museums under conditions.
