“Boomer shooter” is a modern label for FPS games that intentionally emulate design principles associated with 1990s Doom- and Quake-era shooters. The term usually points to quick movement, immediate weapons, readable arenas, secrets and a presentation that favors retro visual language over realism. Its identity comes from supernatural settings and magical weapons, so the sensation is closer to fighting through a hostile fantasy realm than clearing a modern or industrial battlefield.
This change in theme is substantial, not a simple texture swap. Fantasy weapons can make every encounter feel like an exchange of spells or relics, and the setting gives the campaign a different visual and narrative rhythm. If you prefer castles, otherworldly environments and arcane firepower, Amid Evil may feel more distinctive than another game built around conventional guns.
Campaign structure
The campaign is organized across seven episodes. It went through Early Access before those episodes were released, giving the finished campaign a clearly segmented shape. Episode-based organization is useful for players who like a sense of progression through distinct regions or chapters rather than one continuous maze.
Because the game’s appeal is tied to its fantasy identity, the episode structure also helps you judge it fairly. ULTRAKILL is described on Steam as a fast-paced, ultraviolent old-school FPS that fuses classic shooters such as Quake with modern shooters such as Doom (2016) and character-action games such as Devil May Cry. ULTRAKILL’s Steam listing gives September 3, 2020 as its release date and identifies it as an Early Access title. The page explicitly says the game is not complete and may continue to change. That status should influence your purchase decision: current content and systems are playable, but the final shape, balance and scope are not guaranteed to remain identical.
Early Access is therefore part of the recommendation, not a footnote. Choose ULTRAKILL when you are comfortable following an evolving project and value a high-skill combat sandbox now. If you require a finished campaign before starting, select one of the released alternatives instead.

Is DUSK or ULTRAKILL better?
Neither is universally better; they optimize for different goals. DUSK is better as a first exposure to the classic boomer-shooter loop and as a horror experience with a released 2018 campaign. ULTRAKILL is better for players who want the most layered combat system, a high skill ceiling and reasons to replay levels for scores and secrets.
Use a simple test: if you would rather discover an unsettling level than perfect a combo, choose DUSK. If you would rather perfect a combo than preserve a particular mood, choose ULTRAKILL. The Early Access distinction can override both preferences if you only want finished software.

For mechanical mastery, ULTRAKILL is the answer. Steam lists a New Blood FPS Trilogy bundle containing DUSK, Amid Evil and ULTRAKILL.
