DuckDuckGo Email Protection is a free forwarding service introduced in beta on July 20, 2021. It gives you a @duck.com address, removes detectable email trackers, and forwards the cleaned message to an inbox you already use—so you do not need to move from Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, Proton, or another provider.
What DuckDuckGo launched in July 2021
DuckDuckGo announced Email Protection as a beta service on July 20, 2021. Its launch model was deliberately different from opening another mailbox: messages sent to a Duck Address were forwarded to the recipient’s existing inbox after DuckDuckGo removed trackers it could detect.
The announcement described the goal as protecting a personal email address without requiring a change of email service or app. It also said, at launch, that DuckDuckGo did not save email or headers; that statement belongs to the 2021 announcement and should not be treated as a complete specification of every current backend practice.
DuckDuckGo reported that more than 85% of emails sent to Duck Addresses contained trackers. That is a company-reported 2021 figure; the announcement does not provide a sample size or methodology, so it is not an independently verified or current industry-wide rate.

How Email Protection works today
Current DuckDuckGo help documentation describes Email Protection as a free service that removes multiple types of hidden email trackers and forwards messages to an inbox you choose. It does not replace that inbox with a new standalone mailbox.
- You receive a personal or private address ending in @duck.com.
- A sender delivers a message to that address.
- DuckDuckGo removes trackers found on its block list.
- The processed message is forwarded to your existing inbox.
Forwarded messages include a banner indicating which trackers were blocked and which companies appear to be behind them. Tracker detection is based on DuckDuckGo’s lists, so removal is not a promise that every possible tracking mechanism will be identified.

Private Duck Addresses
Private Duck Addresses are generated aliases for situations where you would rather not disclose your personal Duck Address, such as online purchases, newsletters, or unfamiliar sign-ups. DuckDuckGo says you can create unlimited unique private addresses and deactivate an individual address if it starts attracting unwanted mail. Deactivation lets you cut off that alias without changing your personal address or other aliases.

What Email Protection hides—and what it cannot
It hides the address you give to senders
When you use a Duck Address, a sender does not need to see your underlying forwarding address. This is useful for separating your real inbox identity from stores, newsletters, and other services.

It removes detectable trackers
DuckDuckGo strips supported hidden email trackers before forwarding a message. Such trackers can be used to report events such as an open, approximate recipient location, or device information. Removal applies to trackers DuckDuckGo can identify; it is not a guarantee that all tracking or remote content has disappeared.
It does not guarantee anonymity
DuckDuckGo says replies to messages received at a Duck Address are sent from that Duck Address. However, the company also warns that message text can contain your forwarding address or other identifying information if the sender included it. The service masks an address and removes listed trackers, but it cannot certify that every message or reply is anonymous.

Privacy and storage statements in context
DuckDuckGo’s current Email Protection privacy overview says the service limits hidden email tracking, hides a personal address, and does not save email contents. Separately, the July 2021 launch announcement said DuckDuckGo did not save email or headers at that time. Because those statements come from different documents and dates, the launch-era wording should not be used as a substitute for the current privacy documentation.
How this forwarding model differs from a new private mailbox
| Question | DuckDuckGo Email Protection | What a separate mailbox generally changes |
|---|---|---|
| Where mail arrives | Forwarded to an existing inbox | Stored and managed in a new provider account |
| Address options | One personal Duck Address plus generated private addresses | Depends on the provider’s alias system |
| Tracker handling | Removes trackers DuckDuckGo can detect | Depends on that mailbox’s image and content protections |
| Alias control | Individual private addresses can be deactivated | Varies by provider and plan |
| Reply identity | Replies use the Duck Address, but message text can still reveal identifiers | Depends on the provider and what you include in the message |
This makes Email Protection useful when you want address separation and tracker filtering without learning a second inbox interface. It is less suitable if your goal is a completely separate mailbox, guaranteed anonymity, or control over every remote image and piece of message content.
Practical use cases
- Give newsletters a private address so you can disable that address if its mail becomes excessive.
- Use a private alias for a one-time purchase or unfamiliar retailer.
- Keep a personal Duck Address for services you expect to use repeatedly.
- Check the forwarded-message banner to see what trackers DuckDuckGo removed.
For maximum privacy, avoid putting your real forwarding address, full name, phone number, order details, or other identifiers into messages when they are not necessary. Email Protection cannot remove information you deliberately include in the text.

Bottom line
DuckDuckGo Email Protection, launched in beta in July 2021, is a free @duck.com forwarding layer rather than a replacement email account. It combines tracker removal with a personal address and individually controllable private aliases, while continuing to deliver mail to the inbox you already use. Its protection has clear boundaries: detection is limited to trackers DuckDuckGo can identify, and message contents can still disclose who you are.
