They are not direct substitutes for one another on their respective consoles.

Which controller works with your console or PC?
PlayStation 5
Sony positions the DualSense Edge as a PS5 controller. It keeps the standard DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers for games that support those features. See the DualSense Edge announcement and Sony’s PlayStation product page.
Xbox consoles
Microsoft documents the Elite Series 2 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, with Xbox Wireless and USB-C connectivity. It is the ecosystem-fit choice for an Xbox console; do not assume the Edge can replace it there. Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 product specifications list its console and other supported connections.
Windows PC and mobile
Both controllers can be used beyond their primary consoles, but the feature set is not identical across platforms. Sony documents Edge use on Windows over USB or Bluetooth through PlayStation Accessories; Sony notes that haptics and adaptive triggers may require USB and supported games. On PC, the Edge’s function buttons can switch only among profiles saved on the controller. Microsoft lists Bluetooth or USB-C for Windows PCs and mobile devices, and says some older Windows versions require a wired USB connection.

How do their controls and customization differ?
DualSense Edge: DualSense features plus saved profiles
The Edge allows button remapping, stick sensitivity and dead-zone adjustments, trigger adjustments, and vibration changes. Profiles can be saved and switched using the controller’s interface. Its haptics and adaptive triggers work when supported by the game; compatibility should not be assumed for every title or PC connection.
Elite Series 2: tension adjustment and more rear paddles
The Elite Series 2 offers adjustable-tension thumbsticks, shorter hair-trigger locks, a wrap-around rubberized grip, and button mapping through Microsoft’s app. It stores up to three custom profiles plus one default profile. Its four paddles provide more rear inputs than the Edge’s two rear buttons, while the Edge’s controls retain the PS5 controller’s haptic and adaptive-trigger features in compatible games.

Can you replace the sticks, and what comes in the box?
The Edge has a serviceability distinction beyond its interchangeable stick caps: Sony announced a separate replaceable stick module. Sony’s October 18, 2022 announcement listed a historical launch recommended price of $19.99 USD for that module; this is not confirmation of a 2026 price or availability. Microsoft’s cited documentation describes interchangeable Elite stick toppers, D-pads, and paddles, not a replaceable analog-stick module. A swappable topper changes the cap, not the underlying stick module.
Bundle contents matter, particularly when comparing the full Elite Series 2 with Elite Series 2 Core. Microsoft’s Canadian Store listing viewed for this comparison described the full bundle as including a charging dock, USB-C cable, four paddles, extra thumbsticks, an extra D-pad, adjustment tool, and carrying case. The Core listing identifies a more limited included set. Confirm the exact contents of the regional listing before comparing value; bundle names and availability can vary.

Which has better battery life?
Microsoft’s specification says the Elite Series 2 has an internal rechargeable battery with “up to 40 hours of battery life per charge.” Microsoft also cautions that actual battery life varies with usage and other factors, so 40 hours is a maximum claim, not a guaranteed typical result.
Sony’s cited materials do not give a numeric Edge battery runtime. TechRadar’s Rhys Wood reported just over seven hours in its own Edge test in an article last updated April 25, 2024; the same comparison described the Elite Series 2 as lasting around 35–40 hours. Those are review observations, not a controlled manufacturer head-to-head test or Sony guarantee. See TechRadar’s comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare prices in 2026?
Use current listings for your country and compare the exact bundle, rather than relying on launch-era prices or an out-of-region store page. Sony’s October 18, 2022 announcement set the Edge’s historical launch recommended retail price at $199.99 USD, with separate launch prices for other regions. That figure is useful as launch context, not as a current 2026 price. The Microsoft Store page referenced here is Canadian: it displayed CAD $249.99 for the full Series 2 and CAD $184.99 for Core at the time it was accessed. Those regional, time-sensitive amounts are not current US or global prices.
Quick Recap
- Check the local price of the exact controller bundle and confirm which accessories are included.
- If considering the Edge, check the current local price and stock for its separate replacement stick module.
- Compare Core with the full Elite Series 2 only after accounting for the accessories you would otherwise need to buy.
Which controller should you buy?
- Choose DualSense Edge if you play primarily on PS5, want haptics and adaptive triggers in supported games, value on-controller profiles, or consider a separately replaceable stick module important.
- Choose Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 if you play primarily on Xbox, want adjustable stick tension and trigger locks, need four paddles, or prefer Microsoft’s stated battery maximum and interchangeable accessories.
- For PC, decide by the features you will use. Both have documented PC connections, but Sony’s notes about Edge feature limitations, USB-dependent features, and saved-profile switching are important if you expect the full PS5 experience on a computer.
