If your “DualSense 2.0” will not connect to a PS5, start with a wired pairing attempt: turn on the console, connect the controller directly with a USB cable that supports charging and data, and press the PS button. Try another PS5 USB port if necessary. If pairing still fails, reset the controller, reconnect it by USB, update the PS5 and controller software, and then use PlayStation Repairs if the problem remains.

Sony’s official documentation calls this product the DualSense wireless controller; “DualSense 2.0” is not a model designation used on the cited support pages.

What “DualSense 2.0” means in this troubleshooting guide

Many owners use “DualSense 2.0” to describe a PS5 controller, but Sony’s support documentation uses DualSense wireless controller. The connection procedure below applies to that controller. A controller that lights up or blinks has power, but that alone does not prove that it has completed pairing with the console.

Initial pairing and pairing an additional controller are different processes. Sony’s first-use procedure is wired: the PS5 must be on, the controller must be connected by USB, and you then press the PS button. Wireless pairing of a second controller is started from a controller that is already working with the PS5.

1. Pair the controller by USB first

  1. Turn on the PS5. Use the console’s power button or an already paired controller.
  2. Connect the DualSense directly to the PS5. Use the included USB cable when available. Plug the cable into the controller and directly into a PS5 USB port; do not begin with a hub, dock, keyboard, monitor, or other intermediary.
  3. Press the PS button. Sony states that the controller must be paired with the console before it can be used.
  4. Watch the indicators. During pairing, the light bar blinks. When pairing succeeds, the player indicator lights.

Leave the cable connected while you press the PS button. This removes the uncertainty of Bluetooth discovery and gives the console a direct path to identify the controller. If the controller was previously paired with another PS5, a wired connection is still the most reliable way to establish or restore the connection to this console.

If the PS5 displays a user-selection screen after the player indicator lights, choose a profile or create one as prompted. If nothing appears, continue with the cable and port checks rather than repeatedly pressing the PS button.

2. Check the cable and every practical PS5 USB port

A USB-C plug that fits the controller is not necessarily suitable for pairing. Sony specifies a cable that supports “charge and sync” or “charging and data.” A cable marked “charge only” cannot be used to complete pairing.

Use a known-good data cable

Start with the cable supplied with the controller. If it is unavailable or damaged, use another USB-C cable whose specifications explicitly include data or sync. A cable can deliver power well enough to illuminate the controller while lacking the data wires required for the PS5 to communicate with it. That combination commonly produces a controller that appears alive but never finishes pairing.

Change the console port

Disconnect the cable, plug it into a different USB port on the PS5, and repeat the wired pairing attempt. This separates a possible port problem from a controller problem. Make sure both connectors are fully inserted; a partially seated plug can provide intermittent power without a stable data connection.

Keep the test direct

For this diagnosis, connect the controller straight to the PS5. Remove extension cables, adapters and hubs from the path. Once the controller has paired successfully, you can disconnect USB and use it wirelessly; the direct connection is intended to establish the pairing, not to force permanent wired play.

3. Reset the DualSense correctly

Resetting clears the controller’s pairing state without changing the PS5’s system settings. Follow Sony’s sequence exactly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn the PS5 off completely.
  2. Disconnect the controller from USB.
  3. Locate the small reset button in the hole beside the Sony logo on the back of the controller.
  4. Use a pin or a similar tool to press the button and hold it for at least five seconds.
  5. Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable.
  6. Turn on the PS5 if needed, then press the PS button.

The five-second hold matters: a brief touch may not complete the reset. Keep the console off and the USB cable disconnected while pressing the rear button, then reconnect by cable afterward. Resetting is useful when the controller was associated with another console, when a previous pairing attempt became stuck, or when the PS5 no longer recognizes a controller that worked before.

If the controller still does not pair after the reset, repeat the attempt once with a different known-good data cable and a different PS5 USB port. That combination tests the two external connection variables Sony identifies before repair escalation.

4. Install the available PS5 and DualSense software updates

Sony says DualSense updates are added after PS5 system-software updates. Update the console first, then check the controller’s device-software entry:

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any available console update.
  2. After the PS5 update completes, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  3. Install the controller update if the console offers one.
  4. Reconnect the controller by USB and press the PS button again.

The controller update menu may not offer anything until the PS5 system software is current. Keep the controller connected during the update and do not interrupt the console’s restart or installation prompts. If the controller cannot be recognized at all, complete the cable, port and reset checks first; an unpaired controller may not be available for a device-software update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Pair an additional controller wirelessly

Use this method only when another controller is already working with the PS5. It is intended for a second or subsequent DualSense, not as the primary recovery method for a controller that has never paired.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the controller you want to add.
  2. On the working controller, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
  3. On the additional DualSense, press and hold Create + PS together.
  4. Release the buttons when the light bar begins blinking.
  5. Select the controller shown on the PS5’s Bluetooth Accessories screen.

If the additional controller does not appear, keep it close to the console, confirm that it is not still connected by USB, and repeat the Create-plus-PS hold. If no controller is currently working with the PS5, return to the wired procedure instead; the Bluetooth Accessories screen requires an existing input device.

6. Decide whether the fault is the controller or the PS5

Testing another controller is the most useful way to separate a controller-only problem from a console-wide connection problem. Use the same direct USB method and, where relevant, the same known-good data cable.

Test result What it points to Next action
Another DualSense pairs, but the original does not The original controller, its reset state or its connection hardware is the likely focus. Repeat the original controller’s reset and data-cable test, then use PlayStation Repairs if it still fails.
Neither controller pairs through multiple ports and known-good data cables The problem may involve the PS5’s USB or system-side connection rather than one controller. Complete the PS5 and controller software checks, then use the repair diagnostic route.
The controller works by USB but not after the cable is removed Initial pairing succeeded, but the wireless pairing state or wireless setup still needs attention. Use the additional-controller Bluetooth procedure from a working controller.
The controller never lights or responds after reset A simple pairing selection problem is less likely. Try one confirmed data cable and another port; if there is still no response, escalate for service.

This comparison does not require guessing which component failed. Change one variable at a time: controller, cable, or port. If changing the cable and port changes the result, the accessory or port was involved; if every combination fails, the repair diagnostic is the appropriate next step.

7. Know what the light bar does—and does not—tell you

The light bar blinks

Sony documents blinking during the pairing process. Blinking therefore shows that the controller is attempting the process, not that the PS5 has accepted it. Keep the controller connected by a data-capable USB cable and press PS as described in the wired procedure. If the player indicator never lights, treat the attempt as incomplete.

The controller lights but the PS5 does nothing

Power and data are separate functions. A charge-only cable can power the controller while preventing the console from exchanging the information needed for pairing. Replace it with a cable labeled for charging and data, switch USB ports, and retry.

No light appears

Check the cable connection and another PS5 port, then perform the five-second reset with the PS5 off and the controller disconnected. Reconnect by USB and press PS. If there is still no response, the issue is beyond a normal Bluetooth-selection mistake and should be evaluated through PlayStation Repairs.

Common mistakes that make pairing appear broken

  • Using a charge-only cable: physical compatibility does not guarantee data support.
  • Trying wireless pairing as the first connection: Sony’s first-use sequence starts with USB and the PS button.
  • Resetting while the PS5 is on: Sony’s reset procedure begins with the console turned off and the controller disconnected.
  • Holding the wrong buttons: Create + PS is for adding a controller through Bluetooth Accessories; the PS button alone is used after wired connection.
  • Assuming a blinking light confirms success: wait for the player indicator and an on-screen response.
  • Changing several variables at once: testing a different cable, port and controller simultaneously makes the result difficult to interpret. Change one item, retry, and record what changed.
  • Skipping software updates: controller updates are delivered after PS5 system-software updates, so checking only the controller menu may not be enough.

Wired and wireless pairing compared

Situation Connection method Required controls or equipment What success looks like
First pairing or recovery Wired PS5 on; USB cable supporting charging and data; press PS Light bar blinks during pairing and the player indicator lights when paired
Adding another controller Wireless Bluetooth pairing Working controller; Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories; hold Create + PS on the additional controller The additional controller is listed and selected on the PS5 screen
Testing a suspected cable or port Wired Known-good data cable; alternate PS5 USB port; direct connection The result changes or remains the same when one connection variable is changed

When to stop troubleshooting and use PlayStation Repairs

Sony directs users to the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool when problems continue after resetting. Use that route when you have tried multiple known-good data cables and PS5 USB ports, the controller will not light or pair after the reset, or more than one controller shows the same failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before opening the diagnostic tool, note which combinations you tested: whether the PS5 was on, which cable type you used, which ports you tried, whether the rear reset was held for at least five seconds, and whether another controller worked. This information helps distinguish a controller fault from a console-side issue and prevents repeating the same checks.

Do not treat a blinking light, a successful charge, or a momentary connection as proof that the hardware is healthy. The decisive test is whether the PS5 completes pairing and accepts input. If the ordered USB, port, reset, software and second-controller checks do not restore that result, service evaluation is the appropriate resolution.
