DTU says information relating to up to 200,000 current and former users may have been affected, but it cannot determine exactly what was downloaded or how many people are affected. The figure is a possible maximum based on records in the system, not a confirmed victim count.
What happened in the DTU breach?
DTU reported unauthorized access to DTUBasen in a targeted cyberattack. The university said its incident response team contained the attack and that it was investigating with external specialists. DTU also said compromised DTU profiles were used to gain access to the system. The potentially exposed data includes records dating back to 2003; that is the reach of the records, not the date the attack began. DTU’s notice, dated 2 October 2026, says the university reported the incident to the Danish Data Protection Agency and referred it to relevant authorities for further investigation.
The notice does not identify the attackers or explain the initial compromise method. It also does not provide an inventory of the downloaded data, a confirmed number of affected people, or findings from a completed investigation.
Why does DTU say “up to 200,000” people may be affected?
DTU says DTUBasen contains information associated with approximately 40,000 active users and 160,000 former users. Those figures describe records in the system; they do not establish how many people had data downloaded or misused. DTU says it cannot determine the exact number affected, so “up to 200,000” should be read as a possible upper bound based on the system population—not as confirmation that every record was taken. Whose information could be involved, and what data was held?
Potentially affected people include current and former DTU employees, students, guests, and external partners who have had a relationship with the university since 2003. The kinds of information DTU says may be in the system differ by person and record.
Active-user information
For active users, DTUBasen may contain a CPR number (Denmark’s personal identification number), full name, home address, profile picture, work email, job title, office location, other work-related details, and registered next-of-kin information such as a name, relationship, and telephone number.

Information retained for former users
DTU says home addresses, profile pictures, and next-of-kin details for former users are automatically deleted after six months. CPR numbers and full names remain in DTUBasen. The university’s notice does not establish which specific fields were included in the download for any individual.
What risks does DTU identify?
DTU warns that CPR numbers and other personal information could potentially be used in identity fraud or make phishing and other scams more convincing. Its notice describes possible risks; it does not report confirmed misuse of the information.

What should potentially affected people do?
DTU advises anyone who has been an employee, student, guest, or external partner since 2003 to watch for unexpected contact and take care with account security. Its recommended actions are:
- Be cautious with unexpected emails, text messages, or calls—even if the sender appears credible or refers to DTU or personal details.
- Do not disclose passwords or other confidential information in response to an unexpected request.
- Do not approve an unexpected login or authentication prompt.
- Change passwords on services where you reused a DTU password.
- Consider registering a credit alert against your CPR number through Borger.dk.
- If you have name and address protection, be especially vigilant.

Will DTU contact people directly?
DTU says it will notify current and former employees and almost all current and former students for whom it holds CPR numbers via e-Boks. It holds CPR numbers for only a small number of guests and external partners, and it does not hold CPR numbers for next of kin whose contact details may be stored in the system. DTU has also published a public notice because it may not be able to contact everyone directly. Not receiving an e-Boks notification is therefore not, by itself, proof that your information was unaffected.

University Director Bjarke Bak Christensen said: “This is a serious attack on DTU, and we deeply regret the uncertainty it is causing for the people whose information may have been affected. Our first priority has been to establish the extent of the attack, limit its consequences, and ensure that those affected are notified and know what steps to take.”

DTU said its team contained the attack and that its investigation was continuing with external specialists. The university said it would update its English-language notice as significant information becomes available.
