Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →DropTag was a Cambridge Consultants concept for recording parcel drops and other handling events so a recipient or distributor could check for possible transit damage. Its original design paired an accelerometer, memory and a Bluetooth Low Energy connection to a smartphone; a later adaptation used related technology to monitor pharmaceutical shipments for temperature, vibration, humidity and shock. The available reports describe development and historical projections, not a verified product currently for sale.
What was DropTag?
DropTag was a small, battery-powered parcel-monitoring concept described in 2013. It was intended to detect potentially damaging handling during a shipment and preserve event information that could be checked later. Rather than proving that an item inside a parcel was damaged, the tag could indicate that the package experienced a drop or shock that might warrant inspection.
In 2013, EE Times reported that the early version provided a binary indication of whether a package had been dropped. It checked for G-forces above a predetermined threshold. The planned event log was intended to help establish what happened and when, with temperature sensing mentioned as a possible extension.
How did the parcel sensor work?
Detecting and recording a shock
The reported architecture combined an accelerometer with onboard memory, a battery and a Bluetooth radio. The accelerometer checked for forces above a set threshold; memory retained critical event data for later review. The reports do not specify the threshold value or establish that the original parcel concept measured the full force profile of every impact.

Reading the tag with a phone
DropTag used Bluetooth Low Energy (also called Bluetooth Smart) to communicate with a smartphone app. The app could show whether a parcel had been mistreated, while a plot mode offered more detailed analysis. Cambridge Consultants gave a maximum interrogation range of about 50 m indoors in the 2013 coverage; that is a reported maximum, not a guarantee for every building or shipment environment. Electronic Specifier’s 2013 report describes the app, plot mode and range.
What would a DropTag shipment workflow look like?
- Attach the tag before dispatch. The parcel would travel with the sensor while it moved through warehouse handling and transport.
- Let it record events. The accelerometer would check for shocks above its configured threshold, and the device would log critical events for later interrogation.
- Check it on arrival. A recipient or distributor could use a smartphone to read the tag before signing for delivery, potentially prompting an inspection or an early response.
- Use the record as context. A timestamped event history could help assess a damage claim, but it would not by itself prove that the contents were damaged or identify the exact cause.
The 2013 coverage also discussed possible automated checks by smartphones or gateway zones in warehouses. These were described as potential ways to interrogate tags, not as evidence that a particular deployed network was available.

What did the historical cost and battery estimates mean?
The figures below were contemporaneous projections or company-reported comparisons, not current verified prices. In particular, a projected component cost is not the same as a retail price or the full cost of monitoring a shipment.
| Figure | What it referred to | Source and date |
| About 50 m maximum indoor range | Reported maximum distance for interrogating the tag | Electronic Specifier, 2013 |
| Less than $2 | Cambridge Consultants’ projected bill of materials | Electronic Specifier, 2013 |
| About $2.50 | Projected selling price reported for the concept | EE Times, 2013 |
| A quarter of the cost of existing products | Company-reported comparison for the later cold-chain service, not the original parcel tag | Cambridge Network, 2015 |
Cambridge Consultants said it had calculated that the simple design could log crucial events for many weeks on a single coin-cell battery and might be reusable. Those were design estimates reported in 2013, not independently verified battery-life results for a retail product. Actual endurance would depend on implementation and use.

How did DropTag expand into cold-chain monitoring?
In 2015, Cambridge Network reported that DropTag technology had been adapted for pharmaceutical cold-chain logistics. This later service monitored temperature, vibration, humidity and shock during a shipment, using Bluetooth Smart and smartphone connectivity. Its purpose was to identify conditions that could spoil medicines and potentially allow intervention while the shipment was still moving. Cambridge Network’s 2015 report describes that adaptation.
This was a broader monitoring use than the original parcel-drop concept. It should not be assumed that every early DropTag unit included humidity or temperature sensors, or that the later pharmaceutical service was the same product configuration as the 2013 parcel tag.

Is DropTag still available?
The cited coverage describes DropTag as a concept or technology under development. RFID Journal reported in 2013 that Cambridge Consultants was discussing commercialization with several logistics companies, but the available sources do not establish a current retail SKU, current price, warranty, active support channel or current Amazon listing for the original parcel DropTag. Do not treat the historical cost estimates as a present-day offer.
If you are looking for a present-day alternative, the useful category term is Bluetooth shock sensor data logger. Check that a specific device demonstrably offers impact sensing, event logging and compatible phone or reader connectivity. A generic logger should not be represented as the original Cambridge Consultants product.

What to compare in a modern shipment logger
Specifications that determine whether a logger suits a shipment include:
- Shock threshold and event detail: Check the threshold, how impacts are recorded and whether the device provides a simple alert or more detailed event data.
- Environmental sensors: Confirm whether it measures temperature or humidity as well as shock; do not assume those features from a shock-sensing label.
- Connectivity: Check Bluetooth range in the intended setting and whether readings require a nearby phone, a reader or fixed gateways.
- Battery and storage: Compare stated operating life and event-memory capacity for the expected shipment duration.
- Use model and data access: Establish whether the tag is single-use or reusable, whether its app supports export, and how readings can be retrieved after delivery.
- Validation and total cost: For sensitive cargo, check calibration and validation information, then calculate the cost per shipment rather than relying only on a device’s unit price.
What DropTag could—and could not—tell a shipper
The original concept addressed a practical blind spot: a package could encounter rough handling without the recipient seeing it happen. A logged shock could prompt a closer inspection, support an operational response or contribute context to a claim. It would not establish damage to the contents on its own. The available 2013 accounts do not provide a threshold value, a validation protocol or evidence that a DropTag reading could determine the precise force or cause of an event.
