After a laptop falls, first check for safety warnings—not whether it still turns on. If you see smoke, sparks, unusual heat or odor, hear cracking or hissing, notice battery swelling, or find damage to the power adapter or laptop, stop using it, unplug it if safe to do so, and contact the manufacturer. If there are no warning signs, inspect the exterior gently, check basic functions, and back up important files.
1. Check for signs that mean stop using the laptop
Do not power on or continue using a laptop that shows possible electrical or battery danger. Look and listen for smoke, sparks, overheating, a strong unusual odor, cracking, hissing or popping sounds, a damaged battery, damaged power cable or adapter, or operation that has become abnormal. Lenovo’s safety guidance for its T490 product family says to stop using and unplug a dropped or damaged product when safety concerns are present, then contact support for instructions. Consult your own model’s documentation as well.
Lenovo’s instruction is to “Contact the Customer Support Center or the product manufacturer for instructions on how to inspect the product and have it repaired, if necessary.” Do not open the laptop just to inspect it: service steps and battery construction vary by model.
2. Inspect the screen, case, and hinges gently
Screen and case
With the laptop closed, look for cracks, dents, a displaced bezel, separation between panels, or a lid that no longer aligns evenly. If there are no stop-use signs and the lid moves smoothly, open it gently and check for flickering, new lines, or other display artifacts during ordinary use. ASUS’s official physical-damage criteria include screen-back damage and impact or deformation around the panel connector. A screen that lights up does not rule out hidden damage.

Hinges
Check the hinge area and surrounding plastic or metal for cracks, separation, missing pieces, new looseness, or resistance. ASUS identifies hinge damage as a physical-damage category. If a hinge is visibly damaged or binds, stop moving the lid and ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider for model-specific guidance; repeatedly opening and closing it is not a useful test.
3. Check ports and the charging equipment
Inspect the charging port and adapter cable first, then the USB, video, network, and audio ports your model has. Look for bent or broken connectors, a displaced plastic tongue, a loose port, cracks, or damage to the case around a port. ASUS’s criteria include bent or broken port pins and broken or detached port pieces.

- Do not force a cable or plug into a port that looks bent or misaligned.
- Do not use a damaged power cord, plug, adapter, or power supply. Lenovo advises stopping use until the manufacturer provides direction or a suitable replacement.
4. Treat bulging or a shifted touchpad as a battery warning
Look for bulging or separation in the bottom panel or around the keyboard and touchpad. A distorted chassis, a touchpad or keyboard that has shifted, or a screen that no longer closes normally can be a sign of a swollen battery. Dell notes that swelling may affect the enclosure and make a screen appear misaligned; HP describes possible effects on the chassis, touchpad, keyboard, and panel.
If you see swelling, discontinue use and disconnect AC power if it is safe to do so. Do not puncture, bend, press on, or try to free a battery that appears stuck inside the device. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel for safe next steps. These are manufacturer-specific warning signs and recommendations, not a guarantee that every battery will show the same symptoms.

5. Test basic functions only if the laptop appears safe
If there are no safety warnings and the laptop starts normally, observe whether the built-in display remains stable, the keyboard and touchpad respond, the charging connection behaves normally, and ports work without forcing connectors. Stop if use produces a warning sign or abnormal behavior.
If the built-in screen has a problem, an external monitor may help check whether the laptop can send an image to another display. For a Windows external-monitor connection, Microsoft suggests checking that the cable is secure, trying another cable, or trying another available video output. Those steps troubleshoot the monitor connection; they do not diagnose all damage from a fall. A working external display cannot establish that the laptop’s screen cable, hinge area, or other internal hardware is undamaged. Seek model-specific service advice if symptoms persist.

6. Back up files if it is safe to do so
If the laptop remains safe to operate, copy important files to an external drive or another secure backup location, then check that the copied files are present and usable. Microsoft’s Windows guidance covers external drives and cloud storage as backup destinations and explains how to copy files to external storage and verify them.
Safety comes first: do not power on or keep stressing a laptop with a stop-use warning just to retrieve files. If it cannot be used safely, ask the manufacturer or a qualified data-recovery provider about options.

7. Decide what to do next
- Safety warning, swelling, or abnormal operation: stop using the laptop, disconnect power if safe, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
- Visible damage to the screen, hinge, port, or case: avoid stressing the damaged area and seek model-specific inspection or repair advice.
- No visible damage and normal operation: back up important files if safe, then monitor for new symptoms. A basic visual and functional check cannot rule out hidden damage.
Manufacturer guidance identifies damage types and warning signs, but it does not establish the likelihood of a particular component failing after a drop. No general drop height can be treated as safe for every laptop; outcomes depend on the device and the impact.
