Dressmaker is a single-player dressmaking simulation in which you design garments in a sketchbook, arrange and cut pattern pieces, sew them, add decoration, and deliver the result for reputation and coin. To unlock more clothing, increase Prestige for additional fabrics and accessories, then build relationships with customers to earn patterns. The closest thing to a free-design mode is the off-the-rack shop, which becomes available during story progression, although the exact milestone differs between current builds.
Check which Dressmaker edition you are playing
Instructions are not interchangeable between every version called Dressmaker. Current coverage refers to three separate experiences: the complete commercial release on Steam, the creators’ free prototype, and a third-party browser-hosted mirror. The browser portal distinguishes these editions, and the player FAQ warns that the prototype is not the same game as the Steam release.

Before troubleshooting an unlock or a missing save, identify the edition and build shown by your launcher or browser page. A guide written for the prototype or an older Steam build may describe a milestone that no longer applies.

How the customization loop works
Customization is an in-game design process; you do not need a sewing machine, fabric, or other real-world equipment. The official Steam description summarizes it as choosing fabric, arranging and cutting patterns, sewing garments, and adding decorations. A commission normally follows this sequence:

- Read the customer brief. A request includes the customer’s desired design and a budget, so the brief determines the constraints for that commission.
- Open the sketchbook. Select the silhouette or dress components, pattern, fabric, and finishing details. Use the preview to check the overall design before committing materials.
- Arrange the pattern pieces. Place each piece on the fabric and decide its orientation. You can align pieces to the grain or cut them on the bias; placement affects what appears on the finished dress.
- Cut the pieces. Confirm the layout, then cut the arranged pattern pieces. The cut is part of the design result rather than a merely cosmetic step.
- Sew the garment. Assemble the cut pieces in the sewing stage.
- Add decoration. Apply choices such as buttons, bows, appliqué, lace trims, or other available accessories.
- Review and submit. Inspect the completed garment, then deliver it for customer feedback and the resulting progression rewards.
If you are not working from a request, the same design tools lead to the off-the-rack route once that feature is unlocked. You create a garment, put it in the shop window, and sell it as a pre-made dress instead of delivering it to a named customer.
Materials and finishing options
The store listing names five major fabric families: cotton, linen, wool, silk, and velvet. It also lists buttons, bows, appliqué, lace trims, and other accessories. The exact color names, prices, stock, and item availability are build-sensitive, so your current in-game shop and save take precedence over a static list.

Why grain and bias placement matter
Dressmaker treats fabric layout as part of the visible result. The Steam description states that whether a pattern is aligned to the grain or cut on the bias, the way you arrange and cut the fabric is what appears on the final dress. In practical terms, do not treat the cutting screen as a formality: rotate or reposition pieces, check the preview, and use the arrangement that best suits the brief and the look you want.

Materials are not all unlocked by the same system
Fabric and accessory availability are primarily tied to Prestige, while patterns are generally tied to friendship progression. This means a higher Prestige level can expand your material palette without automatically granting every pattern, and befriending customers can add patterns without making every fabric or trim available.
How to unlock more clothes
The tracked unlock database divides clothing availability into four groups. Use the category, rather than a single universal “level,” to decide what to do next.

A practical progression routine
- Take available customer commissions and complete them carefully so you earn the normal reputation, coin, and relationship progress associated with the job.
- Watch your Prestige progression and revisit material and accessory inventory after advancement. A newly reached threshold may expand fabrics and trims separately.
- Continue relationship-building with the customers whose patterns you want. The game’s pattern progression is not simply a second Prestige track.
- If an item remains unavailable after the expected progression, compare your build with the item’s current in-game description rather than relying on an old checklist.
A Dressmaker Wiki snapshot from Build 410 lists 10 named customers with major commission chains. That is a player-wiki snapshot, not a permanent statement of the total customer count; later builds can add, remove, or change content.

When does off-the-rack unlock?
Off-the-rack is the closest equivalent to a custom-dress or sandbox mode. After it becomes available, you can create a design without matching a customer brief, place the finished dress in the shop window, and sell it as a pre-made item.

There is no single milestone that can safely be presented for every current build. One current player FAQ says the feature opens after the Fierce Funeral request. A separate guide dated October 18, 2026, says that non-commission dresses unlock after the third completed customer commission in Build 443. Because those instructions conflict and are explicitly build-specific, treat both as version-bound reports rather than universal rules.
- Finish the early commission chain and check the shop-window or off-the-rack option after each major story milestone.
- Look for a new non-commission or pre-made-dress option in the sketchbook and shop interface.
- If the option is still absent, confirm your build number and use guidance written for that build; do not restart a save solely because an older guide names a different threshold.
How to save an outfit and preserve your progress
Saving the game versus saving a reusable design
The documented save feature is the game save, not a separate, universally documented outfit-export system. A commission design is created inside the commission workflow and submitted to the customer. Once off-the-rack is available, the supported way to keep a non-commission design in active use is to finish it and display it in the shop window as a pre-made dress.

The available documentation does not establish a single manual command that exports an outfit as a standalone file or makes every design a permanent sketchbook template. If you need to preserve a design, record its fabric, pattern, cut orientation, and decorations yourself, then keep the game save in which it was created.
Moving a Steam save between Windows and Mac
The commercial Steam listing includes Steam Cloud support. The current player FAQ describes this as allowing saves to be used across Windows and Mac through Steam Cloud. In practice, use the same Steam account on both computers, let the source computer finish syncing, and wait for the destination computer to complete its Cloud download before launching the game there.
Manual save-transfer instructions circulating in the community are backup-sensitive and version-sensitive. If you use them, copy the entire original save folder first, retain an untouched backup, and avoid overwriting the destination until you have confirmed that the transferred save loads. A browser or prototype save should not be assumed to import into the Steam release.

Common problems and fixes
“The fabric or accessory is still locked.”
Check Prestige first, because the documented system uses Prestige gates for fabrics and accessories. Also verify that you are looking at the current shop inventory for the correct edition and build; material names and stock can change between builds.
“I raised Prestige, but a pattern did not appear.”
Patterns generally come from friendship progression, not the Prestige track. Continue the relevant customer relationship and complete its available requests. A small group of patterns has no documented source in the tracked build, so an absent requirement may reflect incomplete documentation rather than a hidden level.
“The off-the-rack option is missing.”
Confirm that you are in the commercial release and identify the build. The reported trigger ranges from the Fierce Funeral request to the third completed commission in Build 443. Continue the commission chain and check the shop window after each milestone instead of applying one threshold to every version.

Check Steam Cloud status on the computer where the newest progress was made, allow synchronization to finish, and only then start the other computer. If Cloud reports a conflict, keep a local backup before choosing which copy to retain. Do not mix a browser or prototype save with the Steam release.
“The game looks different from an online guide.”
Edition and build differences are the most likely explanation. The prototype, browser mirror, and complete Steam release are separate experiences, and unlock instructions can change even between Steam builds.
What the game does—and does not—promise
Dressmaker’s customization is broad because it combines material selection, pattern choice, physical layout, sewing, and decoration. It is not a real-world sewing simulator that expects you to own equipment. Conversely, the available documentation does not promise that every item has a published unlock condition, that every design can be exported as a template, or that one off-the-rack milestone works across all builds. Treat the current game interface and build-specific notes as the final authority when they disagree with older guides.
