Choose DREDGE if you want a finished fishing-horror adventure today. Choose Still Wakes the Deep for a tightly authored, cinematic first-person horror story. Choose DREADMOOR if flooded-world exploration, fishing, crafting, combat and an upgradeable trawler sound more appealing than a finished game—and you are comfortable with its planned Early Access launch on November 9, 2026.

The short answer

These games share dread, isolation and dangerous environments, but they are built around different kinds of play. DREADMOOR is an upcoming first-person survival-adventure with fishing and boat management at its center. DREDGE is a released fishing game whose sinister mystery grows out of a compact, repeatable catch-sell-upgrade loop. Still Wakes the Deep is a linear first-person horror campaign about surviving a catastrophe on a 1975 North Sea oil rig.

Game Availability Primary loop Best match for
DREADMOOR Free demo released October 6, 2026; planned Early Access November 9, 2026 Fish, scavenge, craft, fight, explore and improve a trawler Players who want systems, discovery and a developing project
DREDGE Released March 30, 2023 on PC and consoles Fish, sell catches, upgrade the boat, dredge and complete quests Players seeking the closest finished fishing-horror game
Still Wakes the Deep Released June 18, 2024 Traverse, hide, escape and uncover a story in a collapsing oil rig Players who prioritize cinematic first-person tension

For most readers asking specifically for “fishing horror,” DREDGE is the safest recommendation because its complete campaign is available now. DREADMOOR is the more ambitious choice if its first-person perspective, post-apocalyptic wetlands and broader survival systems appeal to you enough to accept Early Access uncertainty. Still Wakes the Deep belongs on the shortlist when fishing is optional rather than essential.

What DREADMOOR is

Setting and premise

DREADMOOR is a dark first-person fishing adventure set in a flooded, decaying world. Much of its identity comes from moving between water and land: you pilot a fishing trawler through drowned wetlands, step ashore to scavenge and investigate, then return to the boat to trade, repair and prepare for another expedition. The world is not presented as a clean nautical playground. It is a post-apocalyptic landscape of rotting marshes, settlements under pressure and creatures that have mutated on land and at sea.

DREDGE: Deluxe Edition - Xbox Series X
  • Two Halves of one Tale: DREDGE keeps the player enthralled by hinting at a story much more sinister than at first thought: Uncover piece by piece the mystery surrounding your arrival in the Archipelago.
  • Day and Night Cycle Storytelling: While the world of DREDGE seems peaceful during the day, once the sun sets, you’ll want to be sure you keep your lights on and wits about you. The world changes dramatically at night, so always be on your toes!
  • Fishing Galore!: Every type of fishing within the game comes with an accompanying system to catch fish! From patrolling shallow waters, to trawling the ocean floor, using crab pots, to the titular dredging itself. Experience a wide array of different game mechanics solely created to make fishing as varied and interesting as possible.
  • Keeping Sane: If you want to survive the sea, you need to make sure your sanity is kept in check with the Panic system. Without it, you’ll be seeing deadly illusions, like terrifying aquatic creatures, false rocks you may crash your ship on, and much more.
  • Oh Captain! My Captain!: Keep your boat in good shape with the boat upgrade menu, research opportunities and all-round repairs. Let it get too damaged and you’ll be one step closer to the grave.

The systems it promises

The official Steam listing describes several connected systems:

  • Skill-based fishing rather than a purely passive catch animation.
  • Survival crafting for equipment and resources.
  • Real-time combat against hostile creatures.
  • Exploration on foot and by boat.
  • A fishing trawler that can be upgraded over time.
  • Trading with settlements.
  • Mutated enemies in both aquatic and terrestrial environments.

That combination makes DREADMOOR broader than a straightforward fishing game. Fishing supplies the economic and progression foundation, while scavenging, crafting and combat create reasons to leave safe waters and take greater risks. The first-person camera should also make weather, night travel and close encounters feel more immediate than they do in a top-down or management-focused design.

Release status and what the demo contains

DREADMOOR is not a finished release. Its Steam page lists Early Access for November 9, 2026, and the free demo became available on October 6, 2026. The demo has a standalone questline rather than an undefined technology preview. It includes travel by boat and on foot, fishing, scavenging, meeting an engineer, upgrading the ship at a dry dock and investigating unsettling events after nightfall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That sequence is useful because it demonstrates the intended rhythm: begin with practical work, improve the vessel, then push into a more dangerous investigation. It does not establish the final size, balance or longevity of the full game. Treat the demo as a way to judge controls, atmosphere and the basic loop—not as proof that every planned system is complete.

Early Access expectations

The developers expect Early Access to last approximately six to 12 months. They plan additional regions, fish species, fishing mechanics and boat upgrades, with one major region planned at launch. Dream Dock says the core experience and main gameplay systems are already in place, while Early Access will be used to refine balance and polish, understand how players engage with the game and shape future development.

That statement sets an appropriate expectation: DREADMOOR should be judged as a developing project. Missing content, changing balance, technical issues or altered progression would be normal risks for an Early Access purchase. If you want a fixed campaign with a known ending and stable pacing, wait for the finished version or choose DREDGE or Still Wakes the Deep instead.

How DREADMOOR compares with DREDGE

Why DREDGE is the closest match

DREDGE is a single-player fishing adventure with a sinister undercurrent. Its core activities are catching fish, selling the haul, upgrading the boat, exploring an archipelago, dredging for secrets and completing quests. Those elements overlap directly with DREADMOOR’s advertised fishing, trade, boat progression and investigation systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important difference is scope and presentation. DREDGE is already a complete released adventure, and its fishing loop is the organizing principle for nearly everything else. You plan trips, decide what to carry, manage the value and risk of your catch, then invest the proceeds in a stronger boat and better capabilities. Horror is woven into that routine, so ordinary work gradually becomes unsettling without turning the game into a constant combat campaign.

Where DREADMOOR may appeal more

DREADMOOR promises a first-person view, survival crafting, real-time combat and substantial exploration across land and water. Those systems suggest more physical immersion and a wider range of moment-to-moment decisions. You are not only selecting a route and arranging a hold; you are also expected to move through wetlands, gather materials, fight threats and investigate locations after dark.

Its flooded post-apocalyptic setting is also distinct from DREDGE’s archipelago mystery. Players who want ruined settlements, hostile wildlife, scavenging and a vessel that feels like a personal base may prefer DREADMOOR’s direction. The trade-off is that these ambitions are still being developed, while DREDGE offers a known, polished structure.

Where DREDGE remains the safer recommendation

Choose DREDGE when your priorities are a finished game, an immediately understandable fishing loop and broad platform access. The official site lists Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation versions, and the press materials give a March 30, 2023 release date. It is the natural choice for someone who does not want to participate in development or troubleshoot an unfinished build.

How DREADMOOR compares with Still Wakes the Deep

Still Wakes the Deep’s different design

Still Wakes the Deep takes place in 1975 on the Beira D oil rig in the North Sea. A disaster strikes the platform, and the player must navigate a collapsing structure, search for crew, run, climb and swim while confronting an otherworldly horror. Steam categorizes it as first-person, psychological, Lovecraftian, story-rich, dark, atmospheric and single-player.

There is no fishing-and-upgrade economy comparable to DREADMOOR. Its tension comes from traversal, environmental storytelling, authored encounters and the pressure of staying alive in a hostile, deteriorating workplace. The setting gives the campaign a strong sense of place: metal corridors, exposed machinery, storm conditions and failing infrastructure replace DREADMOOR’s wetlands and boat routes.

Why choose it instead

Still Wakes the Deep is the better fit if you want voice acting, deliberate pacing and a focused story that does not ask you to manage a long-term progression system. It is designed around sustained first-person suspense rather than an open-ended fishing routine. Steam recorded 88% positive from 7,358 English reviews at the cited 2026 crawl, a useful indicator of its reception among that review sample, though any review percentage can change over time.

Pick Still Wakes the Deep when “atmospheric horror” means a cinematic campaign with escalating set pieces. Pick DREADMOOR when it means returning to a boat, improving equipment and deciding how far to venture into a dangerous world.

DREADMOOR’s gameplay loop in practical terms

1. Prepare the vessel

The trawler is more than transportation. The planned loop uses it as the platform from which you fish, carry resources, reach settlements and select the next risk. Upgrades are expected to expand what the boat can do, although the final upgrade tree and costs are not established by the available information. Early Access additions are planned to include further boat upgrades.

2. Fish for resources and income

Fishing is described as skill-based, so success should depend on player input rather than simply waiting for a timer. Catches can support trading and progression. Because DREADMOOR also includes crafting and exploration, fishing is likely to function as one part of a wider resource economy rather than the entire game.

3. Scavenge and craft

On land, scavenging supplies the materials needed for survival and improvement. Crafting links exploration to preparation: a dangerous trip can be worthwhile if it yields components that unlock better equipment or boat capability. The exact recipes and inventory limits are not stated, so do not assume the demo reflects the final economy.

4. Investigate after dark

The demo specifically includes unsettling events after nightfall. That detail matters because the day-night cycle is not merely visual decoration; it frames when the game asks you to take greater atmospheric and potentially combat-related risks. Players who enjoy planning expeditions around visibility and danger should find this more appealing than a purely daytime fishing simulator.

5. Fight or evade mutated creatures

Real-time combat and mutated creatures on land and sea give DREADMOOR a more active survival-horror profile than DREDGE. The available description does not establish the full weapon roster, enemy variety or difficulty settings, so those should be evaluated in the demo rather than assumed from the premise.

6. Trade and improve

Settlements provide a social and economic layer. Trading converts the results of fishing and scavenging into upgrades and supplies, creating the repeatable cycle of expedition, return and preparation. This is the point where DREADMOOR most clearly overlaps with DREDGE, even though its first-person exploration and combat broaden the loop.

Atmosphere and horror: what kind of fear each game delivers

Game Primary source of unease How often you return to routine play
DREADMOOR Flooded ruins, night expeditions and mutated land-and-sea creatures Frequently; fishing, trading and upgrades structure repeated excursions
DREDGE A sinister archipelago, deep-sea secrets and the contrast between ordinary fishing and supernatural danger Frequently; the fishing economy remains the backbone of progression
Still Wakes the Deep Isolation, industrial collapse and an otherworldly threat on the Beira D rig Less often; the campaign is driven by authored traversal and story beats

DREADMOOR’s atmosphere is built around contrast: practical work on a boat gives way to rotten wetlands, night investigations and creatures that should not exist. DREDGE uses a similar contrast between an everyday occupation and a sinister mystery, but presents it through a more compact adventure structure. Still Wakes the Deep sustains pressure more continuously because the environment itself is failing around you and the story controls the pace.

Which game should you play?

Choose DREADMOOR if you want systems and discovery

Choose DREDGE if you want the closest finished fishing-horror experience

  • Fishing, selling catches and improving a boat are the main reasons you are interested.
  • You want a complete game rather than a work in progress.
  • You prefer quests, exploration and mystery integrated into a repeatable fishing routine.
  • You need console options in addition to PC; the official listing includes Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation.

DREDGE is the strongest default recommendation for this exact question because it delivers the fishing-and-horror combination now, without asking you to accept an Early Access roadmap.

Choose Still Wakes the Deep if you want a cinematic horror campaign

  • You value authored pacing, voice acting and environmental storytelling above progression systems.
  • You want first-person horror centered on traversal, hiding, climbing, swimming and escape.
  • You prefer a focused story set in one memorable location.
  • You do not need fishing, crafting or a customizable boat.

Its 1975 North Sea oil-rig setting makes it a thematic alternative rather than a direct mechanical substitute for DREADMOOR.

Availability and timing

DREADMOOR

The free demo is available from October 6, 2026. The planned Early Access date is November 9, 2026. The developers estimate six to 12 months for Early Access and have identified additional regions, fish species, fishing mechanics and boat upgrades as planned additions. A reader buying at launch should therefore expect a developing content set, not the final form of the game.

DREDGE

DREDGE released on March 30, 2023. The official availability information covers Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation, making it the most broadly established option of the three for players who want to choose a console version.

Still Wakes the Deep

Still Wakes the Deep released on June 18, 2024. Its Steam presentation identifies it as a single-player first-person psychological and Lovecraftian horror game with a story-rich, atmospheric focus.

Questions to ask before buying DREADMOOR in Early Access

  • Do I want to help evaluate a developing game? The stated purpose of Early Access includes refining balance and polish and learning how players engage with the systems.
  • Am I comfortable with an incomplete content set? New regions, fish species, fishing mechanics and boat upgrades are planned, which means the launch version will not represent the project’s final scope.
  • Will the demo’s controls hold my attention? Test boat handling, fishing input, on-foot movement, combat and the transition into night investigations rather than judging only the visual mood.
  • Do I want horror or a survival sandbox? DREADMOOR combines both. If you want uninterrupted narrative intensity, Still Wakes the Deep is more focused; if you want a finished fishing loop, DREDGE is more dependable.

Final recommendation by priority

Your priority Recommended game Reason
Finished fishing plus horror DREDGE Released adventure with fishing, boat upgrades, trade, quests and supernatural atmosphere
First-person cinematic horror Still Wakes the Deep Focused 1975 oil-rig story built around traversal, survival and environmental storytelling
Fishing, crafting, combat and exploration in a new project DREADMOOR Flooded-world setting and trawler progression, with the risks of Early Access

If you are undecided, start with DREDGE for the most direct and complete match. Try DREADMOOR’s free demo when you want to see whether its first-person controls and broader survival loop justify waiting through development. Save Still Wakes the Deep for the moment when you want a concentrated horror story rather than a fishing game.
