DRAM is volatile working memory; NAND flash is nonvolatile storage. A server, phone or AI accelerator uses DRAM to hold data and instructions that the processor needs immediately. An SSD or embedded-storage device uses NAND to retain files when power is removed. DRAM delivers lower latency and higher performance, while NAND delivers far greater density and lower cost per bit.
That distinction creates different investment cycles. DRAM returns are increasingly linked to servers, compute and AI memory—especially high-bandwidth memory (HBM). NAND returns depend more on client and enterprise SSD demand, storage capacity and flash pricing. Comparing a memory-chip company therefore requires more than asking whether it “makes memory”: product mix, qualification, manufacturing execution, capital intensity and customer concentration determine how revenue and margins behave.
DRAM and NAND in one view
| Characteristic | DRAM | NAND flash |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Working memory for active computation | Persistent storage for data and files |
| Power behavior | Volatile: contents disappear when power is removed | Nonvolatile: retains data without power |
| Relative latency | Lower latency and faster access | Higher latency than DRAM |
| Density and cost per bit | Lower density and higher cost per bit | Higher density and lower cost per bit |
| Common products | DDR server memory, mobile LPDDR, graphics memory and HBM | Client and enterprise SSDs, phones and embedded storage |
| Main demand signals | Server, PC, mobile, graphics and AI-compute cycles | SSD purchases, enterprise storage deployments and capacity growth |
SK hynix summarizes the trade-off this way: “NAND has high-capacity storage as its key characteristic; although it is slower than DRAM, it plays a core role in the storage device market due to its non-volatility, low cost, and high density.” DRAM is the short-term workspace between a processor and longer-term storage; NAND is the durable store that keeps an operating system, applications and files available after shutdown.

DRAM cells hold electrical charge that must be refreshed continually. The memory controller and system software treat DRAM as the place for active programs, data structures and temporary results. Removing power erases that working state, which is why a computer must reload applications and files from storage after a restart.

What “nonvolatile” means for NAND
NAND flash stores charge in cells in a way that survives a power interruption. It is organized for density rather than the very shortest access time. A modern SSD is not simply a loose collection of flash cells: its controller performs error correction, wear leveling and bad-block management, while firmware translates host commands into flash operations. Those functions allow an SSD to present reliable block storage despite the limitations of individual NAND cells.
Is NAND the same as RAM?
No. NAND is a type of flash storage, not random-access working memory. Both are semiconductor memories, but they serve different layers of a system. When an application opens, the operating system reads it from NAND-based storage into DRAM. The processor then works primarily from DRAM and its caches. Saving a document writes persistent data back to NAND storage.
Using NAND as a substitute for DRAM would make active computation far slower and would not provide the same write endurance or interface behavior. Conversely, using DRAM as a drive would lose every file when power disappeared and would cost far more per gigabyte. Phones combine both: LPDDR for active workloads and embedded NAND for the operating system, photos and apps. PCs and servers use DRAM modules alongside SSDs.
How the two memories are built for different jobs
DRAM: speed, regular access and bandwidth
DRAM is designed for repeated reads and writes at low latency. Commodity DDR memory supplies general-purpose systems; LPDDR targets mobile devices with tighter power budgets; graphics memory serves highly parallel workloads; and HBM places multiple DRAM dies in a high-bandwidth package near an accelerator. These are different products even though all are DRAM, so a manufacturer’s exposure to one does not automatically represent exposure to the others.
NAND: density, persistence and management overhead
NAND arrays pack many bits into a compact area and can be manufactured in configurations aimed at ever-higher capacity. Flash cells have finite program-and-erase endurance and are affected by defects, so controllers use error-correction codes, spare blocks and wear-leveling algorithms. In managed NAND and SSDs, the controller also handles bad-block mapping and converts the host’s logical addresses into physical flash locations. Performance therefore depends on the NAND generation, controller, firmware, interface and available parallelism—not only on the number of bits per cell.

Performance and system-level trade-offs
| Question | DRAM answer | NAND answer |
|---|---|---|
| Where is data while a processor is actively using it? | In DRAM (and smaller processor caches) | Usually only while being read into memory or written back |
| What happens during a power loss? | Unsaved contents disappear | Stored data remains, subject to the device’s power-loss protections |
| What limits capacity economics? | Die area, manufacturing cost and the need for high-speed interfaces | Flash density, layer scaling, controller overhead and endurance requirements |
| What does a buyer pay for? | Latency, bandwidth and reliable high-speed access | Capacity, cost per bit, endurance and sustained throughput |
Sequential transfers can make an SSD appear fast, but small random operations still have much higher latency than DRAM. A system’s responsiveness depends on the entire hierarchy: processor caches, DRAM, the storage controller, NAND and the software workload. Capacity upgrades and performance upgrades are therefore separate purchasing decisions.
Why AI systems need HBM
AI accelerators process many operations in parallel and can be starved if memory cannot deliver data quickly enough. HBM is a specialized DRAM product that stacks memory dies and connects them to an accelerator through a very wide interface. Its purpose is bandwidth and proximity, not persistent storage. If an accelerator loses power, HBM contents disappear just like other DRAM.

It is also a different commercial exposure from ordinary server DDR. A company can have substantial DRAM capacity yet limited HBM sales if its packaging, product design or customer qualification is not ready.
SK hynix states that it established a mass-production system for HBM4 in 2025. The date matters: a production-system announcement is evidence of manufacturing readiness, not a guarantee of a particular revenue level, customer allocation or margin. Investors should track subsequent qualification, shipment volume and pricing disclosures rather than treating the announcement alone as a forecast.
Where NAND fits in SSDs and storage
Most SSD capacity is NAND flash. The drive’s controller exposes a standard interface such as NVMe to the host while managing the underlying flash. Enterprise SSDs add requirements for endurance, predictable latency, power-loss behavior and fleet-management features; client SSDs usually emphasize cost, capacity and responsive everyday use. Embedded NAND serves phones, tablets, automotive systems and other products in which storage is integrated into the device.

Micron’s 2025 SEC filing says its ninth-generation NAND entered volume production in 2024. That statement identifies a manufacturing milestone, but it does not by itself specify industry-wide share, customer qualification or the profitability of every NAND product. Layer-count and process advances can lower cost per bit, yet the benefit depends on yield, output mix and market pricing.

What drives the investment cycles?
DRAM and HBM demand
- AI and accelerator deployments: HBM content per accelerator and the number of systems shipped can raise demand for specialized DRAM.
- Servers and cloud infrastructure: More processors, larger models and virtualization increase server-memory requirements.
- PC and mobile refreshes: DDR and LPDDR demand follows device volumes and memory content per device.
- Graphics workloads: Gaming and professional compute influence graphics-memory demand, which can behave differently from server DRAM.
NAND and storage demand
- Client SSDs: PC shipments, storage upgrades and the shift from hard drives affect unit demand.
- Enterprise SSDs: Data-center build-outs, application performance requirements and storage-capacity growth drive purchases.
- Embedded storage: Phone, automotive and industrial unit volumes determine demand for integrated flash.
- Capacity cycles: Buyers may increase or defer purchases depending on inventory, cloud utilization and the price of storage per terabyte.
Both markets experience inventory corrections and changes in spot and contract pricing, but the timing differs. AI-led HBM tightness can coexist with weak client NAND, while an SSD restocking cycle can improve flash pricing without materially changing server-DRAM demand.
How to analyze memory-chip companies
Start with the revenue mix rather than the company name. The same manufacturer may sell commodity DRAM, LPDDR, graphics memory, HBM, raw NAND, controllers, client SSDs and enterprise SSDs. Each category has different customers, qualification periods and pricing power.
1. Map the demand driver
Separate sales tied to AI and servers from sales tied to PCs, phones and storage. HBM and server DRAM generally offer a different growth and margin profile from commodity memory. NAND exposure should be split between client, enterprise and embedded applications where disclosures permit.
2. Examine the economic value being sold
For DRAM, ask whether the product earns a premium for latency, bandwidth, power efficiency or packaging. For NAND, focus on cost per bit, usable capacity, endurance and sustained performance. A higher-density flash generation can reduce manufacturing cost per bit, but falling market prices can absorb that benefit.

3. Check qualification and customer concentration
Advanced memory must pass customer validation before it can ship at scale. HBM adds accelerator and packaging qualification; enterprise SSDs require platform validation and reliability testing. Concentration in a small number of large customers can make a product successful yet leave revenue vulnerable to one customer’s inventory or design decisions.
4. Evaluate manufacturing execution
- Process-scaling progress and yield, not just announced technology names
- For NAND, layer scaling, controller capability, firmware and endurance management
- For HBM, stacked-die yield, advanced packaging capacity and thermal integration
- Ability to convert capital spending into qualified output on schedule
5. Treat capital intensity as a cycle variable
Memory fabrication and packaging require substantial capital. Expanding during a shortage can add supply just as demand cools; cutting investment too aggressively can sacrifice the next upcycle. Compare planned capacity with realistic qualification timing and product mix instead of assuming every new wafer starts as immediately saleable output.
6. Track pricing and inventory separately
Spot prices can move before contract prices, and customer inventory can mask end demand for several quarters. Read changes in average selling prices, bit shipments, days of inventory and management commentary together. A quarter of strong revenue may reflect restocking rather than durable consumption.

Practical buying implication: choosing an SSD
If your immediate need is persistent storage, an NVMe SSD is the concrete product built around NAND. Check the computer’s connector and protocol first, then compare usable capacity, endurance rating, warranty terms, sustained-write behavior and power-loss protection where relevant. A faster interface cannot make NAND behave like DRAM; the workload and controller determine whether the specification translates into a noticeable benefit.
For a workstation or server, also verify operating-system support, thermal limits, encryption requirements and whether the drive is intended for client or enterprise duty. For a phone or embedded device, storage is usually selected by the product manufacturer, so NAND quality is reflected in the device’s capacity, speed and durability rather than in a user-replaceable drive.
Common analytical mistakes
- Calling all memory “RAM”: NAND is storage and remains powered off; DRAM is working memory and is volatile.
- Assuming HBM is a storage product: HBM is high-bandwidth DRAM for accelerators, not a replacement for SSD capacity.
- Using one cycle for both markets: AI-server demand can strengthen HBM while client SSD demand is weak, or the reverse.
- Counting announcements as sales: A new process or HBM production system still requires yield, qualification and customer shipments.
- Ignoring controllers and packaging: NAND devices and HBM stacks depend on system-level components and manufacturing capabilities beyond the memory cell.
- Comparing market-share numbers without definitions: Check whether figures cover bits, revenue, branded products, captive output or a particular quarter.
- Equating higher density with higher profit: More bits per wafer can reduce cost, but pricing, yield and mix determine margins.
Bottom line for chip investors
DRAM and NAND are complementary, not interchangeable. DRAM supplies fast, volatile workspace for computation; NAND supplies dense, persistent storage at a lower cost per bit. HBM makes the DRAM side especially relevant to AI because accelerators need enormous memory bandwidth, while SSD and embedded-storage demand set the pace for NAND.
The investable question is not simply which company makes memory. It is which products are being sold, to whom, at what qualification stage, with what cost structure and under which part of the cycle. Analyze HBM and server-DRAM exposure separately from commodity DRAM, and analyze enterprise and client NAND separately from one another. Then weigh pricing, inventory, capital spending, manufacturing yield and customer concentration before drawing a conclusion.
