DRAGON QUEST XI S centers on the Luminary, a hero whose fate is tied to the world of Erdrea, and the companions who join the journey. Its Definitive Edition includes character-specific scenarios, adding story material focused on individual party members. Square Enix’s game page
III HD-2D Remake: Ortega’s child takes up the quest
DRAGON QUEST III follows the child of Ortega on a quest to defeat Baramos. Square Enix frames this remake as a reimagining of the celebrated game and the narrative beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy. Square Enix’s announcement, published June 18, 2024
The premise provides a useful distinction: XI S is framed around the Luminary and a circle of companions, while III begins with a hero continuing a parent’s unfinished purpose. The official descriptions do not establish which story is longer or better.

XI S offers a choice of styles
The Definitive Edition includes a 2D mode alongside its 3D adventure, Japanese voice-over, character-specific scenarios, and a choice between original and orchestral music. Those options make it the stronger fit if changing visual presentation or listening to an orchestral soundtrack is part of your decision. III uses HD-2D for its remake

Battle and convenience options
The official descriptions support specific conveniences for III: players can adjust battle speed and use auto-battle. For XI S, the cited product material highlights its added character scenarios, 2D mode, Japanese voice option, and music choice; it does not provide a like-for-like comparison of battle systems. If battle automation or speed control is a deciding feature, III is the one whose official description explicitly lists both.

DRAGON QUEST XI S
Square Enix’s FAQ covers Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Game Pass, Steam, and Epic Games Store. It says content is the same across those versions, though graphical quality varies. On Switch 2, XI S offers Performance Priority Mode at 1080p/60fps and Quality Priority Mode at 1440p/30fps. The FAQ also says the PS4 version of the original DRAGON QUEST XI does not upgrade to XI S; the PS4 version of XI S is playable on PS5. Check the specific edition and platform before purchase. DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake
Square Enix announced III for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Windows and Steam, with release on November 14, 2024. Its FAQ says content is the same across versions, while graphics vary by platform. Physical and downloadable editions have no content differences; Steam and Microsoft Store editions are digital only. Which one should you choose?
- Pick XI S if you prefer an adventure presented around the Luminary and companions, and value character-focused scenarios, a 2D mode, Japanese voice-over, or a choice of music.
- Pick III HD-2D Remake if you want Ortega’s child’s classic quest, the HD-2D visual style, or the specifically listed battle-speed adjustment and auto-battle options.
- Check the edition first if you already own a version of XI: the original PS4 game does not upgrade to XI S.
- Choose by platform too if display modes or graphics matter; the publisher says content is consistent across versions, but graphical presentation can vary.
