DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 edition, released September 24, 2026. It retains the Definitive Edition’s story and additions, and offers a choice between publisher-listed 1440p/30fps quality and 1080p/60fps performance modes. These are official specifications, not independent test results.
What makes the Switch 2 edition different?
Nintendo lists a dedicated Switch 2 edition that can only be played on Switch 2. It carries over the content added in the original Definitive Edition and introduces modes that prioritize graphics or performance. Square Enix describes the story and content as the same across versions; the new modes are the main stated edition difference.
The Definitive Edition includes additional party-member chapters, Japanese and additional English voice options, the ability to switch between 2D and 3D presentation, and an orchestral score. Those additions remain part of the Switch 2 release.

The figures are publisher specifications. They do not establish how consistently the game holds its frame rate, how image quality compares in play, or how either mode affects battery life or loading.

How does the original Switch version compare?

Running the original game on Switch 2 does not turn it into the dedicated Switch 2 edition: Nintendo says its behavior remains consistent with Switch. Nintendo’s general compatibility guidance notes that support can vary by game, so check the title-specific listing for this release.
What should existing owners know before buying?
Nintendo says there are no plans for an upgrade pack. If you want the dedicated Switch 2 edition and its priority modes, you should expect to buy that edition separately rather than convert your Switch copy. Neither Nintendo nor Square Enix says that saves can move between the two versions, so plan on beginning a new save if you switch editions.

The choice is therefore practical: keep playing the Switch edition on Switch 2 if you are satisfied with its Switch-consistent behavior and want to continue that version; choose the dedicated edition if its listed modes matter enough to justify a separate purchase and a fresh start. Check your local eShop for current availability, price, and storage details, which can vary by region.

For a new player with a Switch 2, the dedicated edition is a compelling option on paper: it combines the Definitive Edition’s substantial content with a choice between a higher listed resolution and a higher listed frame rate. For an existing Switch owner, it is less straightforward because there is no planned upgrade pack and the save cannot transfer. Without independent performance testing, the fairest verdict is that the Switch 2 edition is better specified and more flexible, not that its real-world image or frame-rate performance has been independently verified.
