Choose Dragon Age: The Veilguard if you want action-forward combat, a more directed sequence of regions, and a new companion-led story. Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition if you want larger roaming spaces and the option to carry a custom Dragon Age world state into the game. Neither is a universal upgrade: the better choice depends on whether you value combat flow and a fresh story or exploration and continuity.

Quick comparison

What matters to you Better fit Why
Action-forward combat with tactical commands Dragon Age: The Veilguard Choose a class, bring two companions, and direct allies with an ability wheel.
Broad roaming spaces Dragon Age: Inquisition It is the stronger fit if exploring larger areas is a priority, though its scale and progression gates may feel slow to some players.
A guided route through distinct regions Dragon Age: The Veilguard Its explorable areas connect through the Crossroads, with the Lighthouse as a central hub.
Importing a custom historical world state Dragon Age: Inquisition Dragon Age Keep was designed to let players construct a history and import it at the start of Inquisition.
Companion and faction stories that shape later play Dragon Age: The Veilguard BioWare says these stories and player choices affect relationships and later stages.

Which game has the combat you want?

Veilguard: action with tactical commands

The Veilguard puts more emphasis on fluid, moment-to-moment action. You choose a Warrior, Mage, or Rogue, take two companions, and can use an ability wheel to command allies and set up team combos. BioWare says the wheel can pause the action while you issue follower commands and use abilities, so combat is action-forward without removing tactical decisions. See EA’s official game overview.

Pick by feel, not by a claim that one is objectively deeper

If you want combat to keep moving while still letting you coordinate abilities, The Veilguard is the clearer fit. This comparison does not establish an objective ranking of the combat systems; consider whether you prefer direct action or the style of play you remember from Inquisition.

How do exploration and pacing differ?

Veilguard: distinct regions around a central hub

The Veilguard uses the Lighthouse as a hub and connects explorable regions through the Crossroads. BioWare’s player guide encourages exploring areas for side quests and loot. That structure suits players who prefer distinct destinations and a more directed journey over spending long stretches in large roaming zones.

Inquisition: wider spaces, with scale that may test your patience

Inquisition is the better option if broad areas to roam are a central draw. But bigger spaces and progression requirements can also slow the main path. In a September 2026 interview with PC Gamer, former Dragon Age executive producer Mark Darrah said he would cut a large area such as the Hissing Wastes and reduce the Power required to reach critical-path missions. He suggested a 40 to 60 percent reduction in that requirement as a design opinion, not a measured statistic or a universal player verdict.

Which game better carries the Dragon Age story forward?

Inquisition: build a custom history with Dragon Age Keep

BioWare designed Dragon Age Keep to let players create a custom historical world state and import it at the beginning of Inquisition. In its August 2013 announcement, executive producer Mark Darrah described customizing a Dragon Age history to players’ specifications. For returning fans who want their prior saga reflected in the next game, that makes Inquisition the meaningful choice between these two. The cited sources do not establish a complete list of which choices The Veilguard recognizes.

Veilguard: a new companion-led story

The Veilguard focuses on its own companion and faction stories. BioWare says side content and companion quests can directly affect how later stages unfold, and that player choices affect relationships. That supports choosing it for character bonds and quests that matter within this game, but it does not settle which game has better writing or deeper companions; those are matters of taste.

What should you play first?

  • Start with The Veilguard if active combat, a directed route through distinct regions, and a new companion-focused story matter most to you.
  • Choose Inquisition if you want broad exploration or care about shaping and importing a Dragon Age world state.
  • Think about pacing if large areas and progression gates may frustrate you: Darrah’s criticism reflects his own design view, not a consensus.

The Veilguard launched on October 31, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, according to EA. That establishes its original platform lineup, not current prices, regional stock, or compatibility details for a particular edition.
