Choose the class whose weapons and combat rhythm appeal to you; you are not locked into one permanent build. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, success comes from reading enemy defenses, coordinating Rook’s abilities with two companions, and adjusting difficulty and accessibility settings to suit your playstyle. Here’s how those systems fit together for a first playthrough.

How to choose a class

The classes differ in weapons, distance and action style—not in a proven ranking of damage or difficulty. Electronic Arts’ descriptions are a useful guide to the feel of each option, but they are not comparative balance testing. Pick the one whose combat fantasy sounds enjoyable; you can change abilities and skill-tree choices outside combat.

Class Weapons and distance What the style emphasizes
Warrior Sword and shield or two-handed weapons; close combat Defensive sword-and-shield fighting or heavy attacks
Mage Spells at range or in close quarters Varied spellcasting, including elemental attacks
Rogue Bow or dual swords Fast movement and precise attacks

These descriptions come from EA’s class overview. They describe different approaches rather than identifying a universally best or easiest class.

How combat works: read enemies and adapt

Enemy types have weaknesses and resistances, according to EA’s launch guide. Pay attention to the enemy you are facing and use that information when choosing Rook’s abilities and the companions you bring. If an encounter is going poorly, consider whether your party’s tools suit the enemy before assuming you need a different class.

Builds are adjustable outside combat

Rook earns skill points by leveling. The Constellation skill tree includes class and weapon skills, assignable abilities, upgrades, traits and stat boosts. EA says you can refund individual nodes or the entire tree without spending a resource, so experimenting does not require committing to a single build. You can also change Rook’s and companions’ ability loadouts outside combat. See EA’s progression and companions guide for those systems.

Pair companion abilities for detonations

Each companion has Primer and Detonator abilities, and each Primer has a matching Detonator. Use a matching pair to trigger a detonation that deals increased area damage and stagger. For example, EA describes Rook priming Sundered with Toxic Dash and Neve detonating it with Icebreaker. Treat that as an illustration of the pairing system, not a required setup.

  1. Check the abilities available to Rook and the two companions you plan to take.
  2. Look for a Primer and its matching Detonator.
  3. Use the Primer, then trigger its matching Detonator to create the area effect.

Bring companions and keep developing them

Rook takes two companions on each mission. The team has seven companions, each with their own expertise and abilities. Companions also have individual levels and gear; EA says each companion level grants two skill points. Their experience can grow through companion quests, conversations and decisions, so talk with them and pursue their quests when available.

Companion and faction stories are central to the game, and EA says side content and companion quests can affect later stages. That broad guidance does not establish a specific consequence for every individual choice. If you want to avoid plot revelations, use care with detailed quest walkthroughs.

Choose a difficulty and comfort settings

EA lists six difficulty options. The names and emphasis below are from its accessibility options guide.

Option What it emphasizes or allows
Storyteller Difficulty preset
Keeper Party composition and equipment over reaction speed
Adventurer Combat, party composition and equipment equally
Underdog Difficulty preset
Nightmare Difficulty preset; cannot be reversed without starting a new playthrough
Unbound Lets you customize settings

You can also tune settings such as parry timing, aim assist and enemy aggression. Exploration presets provide options for wayfinding guidance and how close you need to be before interactable objects are highlighted. Use these controls to make play more comfortable; they are settings, not a measure of whether you are playing correctly.

Explore after the Prologue

Exploration opens after the Prologue. EA recommends investigating areas for additional quests and loot, and its guidance notes that side content and companion quests can affect later stages. Make time to explore and speak with companions rather than treating every stretch of the game as a straight run through the main mission.
