The detailed 2022 account describes a Raspberry Pi Pico-based USB joystick mod; a 2024 report instead names a Raspberry Pi Zero, leaving the exact board used unresolved.
How the Paw Patrol toy controls Super Hang-On
The toy’s handlebars provide steering and three buttons. In the technical description published by AUSRETROGAMER on 18 January 2022, a joystick potentiometer inside the toy detects the steering movement. A 3D-printed guide holds the potentiometer in place without damaging the toy, and the steering sensor and handlebar buttons connect to a Raspberry Pi Pico.
Tilley programmed the Pico to present itself to a computer as a USB joystick, so the toy’s physical controls could operate Super Hang-On. The report identifies the project as “Paw Patrol Super Hang-On.” Read AUSRETROGAMER’s report.
What the reports say about the hardware
The two published accounts agree on the basic idea but name different Raspberry Pi boards. Neither source explains whether the difference reflects a later revision, a separate build, or a reporting error.

| Account | Board named | Reversion detail |
|---|---|---|
| AUSRETROGAMER, 18 January 2022 | Raspberry Pi Pico | The Pico can be unplugged and the buttons reconnected to restore the toy’s original functionality. |
| Time Extension, 5 September 2024 | Raspberry Pi Zero | Tilley says the toy can be reverted, with an additional hole for the USB cable. |
In Time Extension’s report, Tilley described it this way: “Using a $5 Paw Patrol toy I found at an op-shop/thrift store to play the arcade classic Super Hang-On. It uses a Raspberry Pi-Zero and you easily revert it back to the original toy (with an additional hole where the USB cable went).” Read Time Extension’s 2024 report.
How reversible is the modification?
The 2022 description says the Pico can be unplugged and the original buttons reconnected, allowing the toy to work as it did before the conversion. The later account adds a physical caveat: its version leaves an extra hole for the USB cable. So “reversible” refers to restoring the toy’s original function, not necessarily returning its casing to an untouched condition.

Is this a complete build guide?
No. The reports describe the concept and some of the hardware, but they do not provide a complete parts list or step-by-step build instructions. They also do not specify the potentiometer’s resistance, shaft dimensions, or mounting requirements, so the reporting is not enough to identify a compatible replacement part.
Neither account publishes a latency measurement, independent performance benchmark, or formal test result. The reports establish that the controls were used to play the game, but do not quantify how the conversion performs.
