Choose DP-600 if your daily work is building analytics assets in Microsoft Fabric, especially semantic models and the data preparation behind them. Choose DP-700 if your work is data engineering in Fabric: loading, transforming, orchestrating, monitoring, and optimizing pipelines. DP-800 is a different kind of credential. It covers AI-enabled database development across Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, and SQL databases in Fabric, so it fits database developers rather than Fabric analytics or data engineering roles.

Compare the three by the work you do

The three exams overlap in name and platform, but Microsoft’s own candidate profiles point to different jobs. The table below uses Microsoft’s published skill weights and the languages named in each study guide. The weights are ranges, so the exact mix of questions on any given form can shift within those bands.

Credential Best fit by target work Skill weights in Microsoft’s study guide Languages named by Microsoft Exam notes
DP-600: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate Analytics engineers and BI practitioners who design, create, and manage semantic models, warehouses, and lakehouses Maintain a data analytics solution (25–30%); prepare data (45–50%); implement and manage semantic models (25–30%) SQL, KQL, and DAX 100-minute proctored exam according to the certification page. Microsoft says the English objectives update on October 19, 2026.
DP-700: Fabric Data Engineer Associate Data engineers who load data, build pipelines, orchestrate workloads, and monitor and tune Fabric analytics solutions Implement and manage an analytics solution (30–35%); ingest and transform data (30–35%); monitor and optimize an analytics solution (30–35%) SQL, PySpark, and KQL 100-minute proctored exam according to the certification page. Microsoft says the English objectives update on October 19, 2026.
DP-800: Developing AI-Enabled Database Solutions Database developers who build AI-enabled solutions across SQL Server, Azure SQL, and SQL databases in Fabric Design and develop database solutions (35–40%); secure, optimize, and deploy database solutions (35–40%); implement AI capabilities in database solutions (25–30%) T-SQL, plus familiarity with GitHub CI/CD, AI-assisted development tools, embeddings, vectors, and models Scoring and objectives are in the study guide. Current booking logistics and exam languages are not confirmed in this article; check the Microsoft Learn certification page directly.

DP-600: the analytics and semantic-model path

DP-600 is aimed at people who turn prepared data into analytical assets that others use. Microsoft’s profile centers on designing, creating, and managing semantic models, warehouses, and lakehouses. The responsibilities include preparing and enriching data, securing and maintaining analytics assets, and implementing and managing semantic models.

The study guide’s examples include workspace, item, and security controls; governance; lifecycle management; data preparation; and optimizing semantic models for enterprise scale. Data preparation carries the largest weight at 45–50%, so the exam rewards practical transformation work as much as modeling. Be ready for DAX alongside SQL and KQL, since DAX is the language most specific to this path.

DP-700: the data-engineering and orchestration path

DP-700 is aimed at people who move and shape data through Fabric. Microsoft’s profile emphasizes data loading patterns, data architectures, and orchestration. Its responsibilities include ingesting and transforming data, and securing, managing, monitoring, and optimizing an analytics solution.

The study guide’s examples cover workspace settings, lifecycle and security, orchestration choices and triggers, loading patterns, monitoring, error resolution, and performance optimization. Unlike DP-600, the three skill groups carry equal weight, each 30–35%. That makes the exam a broad test of operating a pipeline end to end, not just one specialty. Spark appears through PySpark, so candidates who have only worked in SQL-based tools should plan time for it.

DP-800: a database development credential

DP-800 should not be read as a third version of the Fabric role exams. Microsoft’s study guide frames it around database work across SQL Server, Azure SQL, and SQL databases in Fabric. The candidate profile describes T-SQL development, structured and semi-structured data, database deployment and security, and AI integration.

The AI scope is specific. Microsoft expects familiarity with GitHub CI/CD, AI-assisted development tools, embeddings, vectors, and models. If your job is writing and deploying database code that uses these capabilities, DP-800 matches that work. If your job is building Fabric semantic models or pipelines, DP-800 is not a substitute for either Fabric role exam, even though Fabric SQL databases appear in its scope.

Which one should you choose?

Use the job you actually do, not the platform name, to decide:

  • Choose DP-600 if your responsibilities center on semantic models, reporting-ready data, warehouses or lakehouses used for analysis, and access and governance for analytics assets. Plan for DAX in addition to SQL and KQL.
  • Choose DP-700 if your responsibilities center on ingestion, transformations, pipelines and orchestration, Fabric operations, and performance monitoring. Plan for PySpark in addition to SQL and KQL.
  • Choose DP-800 if you develop database solutions in T-SQL and want credentialing in AI-enabled database work across Microsoft SQL platforms.
  • If your role spans analytics and engineering, compare the specific tasks you perform against each exam’s objectives. Microsoft’s reviewed guides do not set an order or prerequisite chain, so there is no required sequence between these credentials.

Before you book: exam facts to check

Microsoft lists DP-600 and DP-700 as 100-minute proctored assessments, and the certification pages list the available exam languages. Exam price and availability depend on your region, so confirm both on the live Microsoft page and in the Pearson VUE scheduling flow before you pay.

  1. Open the study guide for the exam you are targeting and note the version that applies to your scheduled date.
  2. Confirm the exam language and regional price on the certification page.
  3. Schedule through the Pearson VUE flow linked from Microsoft’s certification page.
  4. Work through Microsoft Learn’s self-paced study material, and use the practice assessments on the certification pages to find weak objectives.

Microsoft’s study guides state that a score of 700 or greater is required to pass. Microsoft also says associate certifications expire annually and can be renewed through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn. The study guides point candidates to self-paced learning and instructor-led training. The sources do not establish that a particular paid book is necessary.

October 19, 2026: check the objective version

Microsoft’s study guide pages for DP-600 and DP-700 show a skills-effective date of October 19, 2026. As of early October 2026, those objectives should not be described as already in force. Microsoft says exams are updated periodically, so pick the objective version that matches your scheduled exam date. Microsoft also notes that localized exam versions may lag the English update by about eight weeks, though timing can vary. If you book before October 19, study against the current English objectives and check whether your localized exam has been updated.

What this comparison does not establish

These recommendations infer fit from Microsoft’s candidate profiles and published objectives. Microsoft’s materials do not establish employer demand, salary outcomes, pass rates, or relative difficulty, so this article makes no claim about any of them. The objectives also show coverage areas, not a guarantee that every bullet point appears on an exam.

Microsoft’s study guide for each exam is the authoritative source for objectives, and the certification page is the source for logistics.
