Choose down for lower weight and a smaller packed bundle in mostly dry conditions; choose synthetic insulation for better damp-weather resilience, faster drying, and typically lower cost. Those are general insulation tendencies, not guarantees about every blanket. Compare products by their actual dimensions, weight, construction, shell, price, and care instructions.

How down and synthetic camping blankets compare

Factor Down Synthetic
Warmth for carried weight Generally provides more warmth for its weight. Generally provides less warmth for its weight; compare the specific blanket rather than assuming equivalent performance.
Damp conditions Can lose loft and insulating ability when wet. Water-resistant treatment may help with light moisture but does not make down waterproof. Generally retains more insulating ability when damp and dries faster.
Packed size Generally compresses smaller. Generally packs bulkier.
Price Generally costs more. Generally costs less.
Care Often needs more careful handling and takes longer to dry thoroughly. Often dries faster; some products allow machine washing.

These are broad material comparisons drawn from guidance about insulated sleep gear and clothing, not controlled tests of matched camping blankets. Construction, dimensions, shell fabric, and amount of insulation all affect the result. REI’s down-versus-synthetic insulation guide and Patagonia’s insulation guidance describe the general tradeoffs.

Which insulation suits your camping conditions?

Choose down when weight and pack volume matter most

Down is a strong fit when you need a blanket that carries lightly and compresses into a small bundle, and you can keep it reasonably dry. That can matter on backpacking trips or when pack space is limited. Check the listed blanket dimensions and weight: products with different sizes or construction are not a fair head-to-head comparison.

Choose synthetic when moisture or easy drying is the concern

Synthetic insulation is a practical option if condensation, damp ground, or occasional wet exposure is likely, or if you want a blanket that dries more quickly after use. It is not immune to soaking, but it generally continues to insulate better than wet down. A water-resistant down treatment can resist some moisture; it is not waterproofing.

Consider budget, but compare like with like

Synthetic insulation generally costs less than down. The price of an individual blanket also depends on its size, fill, shell, features, brand, and current sale. Compare blankets with similar dimensions and features, and check current listings rather than treating a general price difference as a fixed premium.

Compare the actual blankets, not just the fill

Look at dimensions, total weight, construction, shell material, packed-size specifications when available, and the care label. The REI camping-blanket category includes both down and synthetic options and lists item-level specifications that can help with this comparison.

For example, REI’s listing for the Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket identifies synthetic insulation, dimensions of 75 × 52 inches, a weight of 2 lb. 3.2 oz., and machine washing. These are specifications for that listed product, not results from an independent warmth test; listings can change, so confirm current details and follow the blanket’s own care label.

How warm is a camping blanket?

Do not assume that down, synthetic fill, or a fill-power figure alone tells you how warm a particular blanket will be. The cited blanket listings do not establish a standardized temperature rating, and there is no controlled, size-matched warmth comparison here. If you need a reliable sleep-system temperature rating, verify that the maker provides one for the specific product; otherwise, treat a camping blanket as an added layer rather than a rated replacement for a sleeping bag.

How to care for a camping blanket

The blanket’s sewn-in care label and its maker’s instructions take precedence over general advice. REI’s sleeping-bag cleaning guide recommends gentle handling for insulated sleep gear, avoiding fabric softener and washer agitators, using low dryer heat only when permitted, and ensuring the item is completely dry before storage. Those are general sleeping-bag recommendations; apply them to a blanket only when its maker allows the same method.

Down blankets

Down needs especially thorough drying and can take several hours to dry fully. Clumps may need to be gently separated during drying so the insulation can loft evenly. Do not put a down blanket away while damp, and do not assume that a method intended for a sleeping bag is safe for a particular blanket.

Storage

Keep insulated gear clean and dry, and avoid leaving it compressed for long periods when it is not in use. Store the blanket only after it is completely dry, following any storage directions from its manufacturer.
