Slaughter Mode is an announced endless, single-player survival challenge for DOOM: The Dark Ages—not a confirmed copy of any other shooter’s horde mode. Its announcement describes escalating rounds of randomized demons, bosses, and arenas, with personal high scores, cosmetics, and weekly challenges. It is announced for November 2026 and requires the Revelations expansion; no exact release day or full rules have been published in the announcement reproduced so far. The clearest comparison is with The Dark Ages’ own Ripatorium: Slaughter Mode is presented as a ready-made survival and score chase, while the Ripatorium lets players configure encounters themselves.

What is Slaughter Mode in DOOM: The Dark Ages?

The announcement describes Slaughter Mode as an endless solo survival challenge. Players face escalating rounds featuring randomized demons, bosses, and arenas, with personal best scores, cosmetic rewards, and weekly challenges as replay goals. These are announced features, not a confirmed account of the final live mode.

The mode is announced for November 2026. The announcement reproduced by the DOOM community gives no exact day. Treat the date and mechanics as announcement-stage details until Bethesda or id Software publishes release notes.

How does Slaughter Mode compare with the Ripatorium?

The Ripatorium is the more useful direct comparison because it is already part of The Dark Ages. The two modes have different stated purposes: Slaughter Mode supplies an endless randomized challenge, while the Ripatorium is a tool for building and tuning encounters.

What the Ripatorium lets you configure

Bethesda’s August 7, 2025 Update 2 notes introduced the Ripatorium as an endless arena mode with an encounter manager. Players can choose demon types and quantities, set a time limit or endless play, control enemy respawns, and select from three arenas.

Update 3, dated November 18, 2025, expanded that setup: players can customize up to five rounds, each with up to 10 respawn waves, choose encounter presets, and share custom rounds using passcodes. Bethesda labels passcode sharing as beta.

Does Slaughter Mode work like horde modes in other shooters?

Only at the broadest level can it be compared: the announcement describes surviving repeated, escalating enemy encounters. “Horde mode” is a genre label, not a shared rulebook. The available mode announcement does not establish Slaughter Mode’s co-op support, matchmaking, global leaderboards, checkpoint rules, scoring formula, or permanent progression. Nor does it provide enough sourced mechanics to compare it feature by feature with named modes in other shooter franchises.

For DOOM Eternal, a Twisted Voxel report on the developer stream says feedback on that game’s Horde Mode influenced Slaughter Mode. That is useful lineage, but it does not establish that the two modes share rules. A separate MISSIL report attributes a description of the new mode to game director Hugo Martin; it is secondary reporting, not a transcript establishing further mechanics.

Does Slaughter Mode require Revelations?

The reproduced announcement says yes. Bethesda describes Revelations as a paid downloadable add-on for base-game players, with purchase or an upgrade to Premium Edition as routes to access in its official expansion announcement. Check your platform’s listing for current purchase terms. This establishes a digital add-on route; it does not establish a physical DLC product.

What is still unknown?

The announcement does not specify an exact launch day, full round or checkpoint rules, scoring calculation, the complete reward list, matchmaking or leaderboard features, or whether every Revelations enemy appears. It also gives no count for arenas, rounds, bosses, cosmetics, or weekly challenges. Those details should not be assumed from the word “endless” or from another game’s horde mode.
