The Dark Ages’ endless solo challenge is Ripatorium, a customizable arena where you choose demons and encounter settings. Horde Mode is in DOOM Eternal: a structured, score-driven solo run through combat, timed, and traversal rounds. The practical difference is control: Ripatorium lets you build an encounter; Horde Mode sets the round sequence, lives, scoring, and unlock progression.

What is Ripatorium in DOOM: The Dark Ages?

Ripatorium is the official name for The Dark Ages’ endless arena challenge. Its Encounter Manager lets you select demon types and quantities, choose an arena, set a time limit, or enable Endless mode. An enemy respawn counter is also available. The initial release included three arenas: City of Ry’uul, Village of Khalim, and Harbor of Souls. Bethesda’s Update 2 notes, dated August 7, 2025, describe it as an endless arena where players set up their own combat encounters.

Ripatorium updates and unlocks

Update 3 added more encounter presets, deeper customization, additional jukebox tracks, and passcode sharing for custom encounters on a per-round basis. These changes are described in Bethesda’s Update 3 notes, dated November 18, 2025.

Bethesda’s July 7, 2026 Revelations announcement describes Ripatorium 3.0 as a custom arena challenge mode. Completing Revelations Master Arenas unlocks new maps, demons, and fully upgraded weapons for use in Ripatorium 3.0. That announcement concerns additional content; it does not say Revelations is required to access the original Ripatorium.

What is Horde Mode in DOOM Eternal?

Horde Mode is a single-player score competition played across three missions drawn from DOOM Eternal and The Ancient Gods – Parts One and Two. Bethesda’s Horde Mode announcement describes a sequence of combat, timed, and traversal rounds. A mission can include an Arena Round, Blitz Round, optional Bonus Coin Round, Traversal Round, and optional Bonus Blitz Round.

Rounds, lives, and scoring

The mode has no checkpoints, and a run starts with three extra lives. Rounds award points for eligible demon kills, mission challenges, and coins in relevant rounds. Larger demons are worth more, while bounty demon value falls over time. Milestones unlock customization items.

Ripatorium vs. Horde Mode: the key differences

What to compare Ripatorium (The Dark Ages) Horde Mode (DOOM Eternal)
Format Player-configured arena encounter Preset sequence of round types across missions
Endless play Explicit Endless setting in the Encounter Manager Successive waves within mission structure; the cited official description does not state a user-configurable endless toggle
Player control Choose demon types and quantities, arena, respawn counter, and time limit or Endless mode; later updates add presets and sharing The official description emphasizes rounds, scoring, lives, and progression rather than encounter construction
Run pressure You set the encounter parameters No checkpoints, three extra lives to start, and score competition
Progression Update 3 added custom encounter sharing; Revelations Master Arenas unlock additional content for Ripatorium 3.0 Milestones unlock customization items; mastered weapons are awarded through Arena Round progression

The contrast between a player-built encounter and a fixed round sequence follows from Bethesda’s descriptions. “Practice” or “sandbox” can suggest how Ripatorium feels, but Bethesda calls it an arena or challenge mode, not a practice mode.
