There is no separately documented official release called Don Bradman Cricket Jr in the materials available for this guide. The documented PC games are Don Bradman Cricket and Don Bradman Cricket 17; the setup advice below applies to those editions.

For PC, use an Xbox-compatible controller as your primary input. Steam lists Xbox controller support and marks the game’s system requirements “Controller Required.” A keyboard can be made to work with community input-emulation software, but that is an unofficial workaround and cannot reproduce the analogue-stick control as naturally as a controller.

What you need before launching the game

The simplest configuration is an Xbox-compatible PC controller connected before you start Don Bradman Cricket. Steam identifies Xbox controllers under full controller support and explicitly lists “Controller Required” in the additional notes for the PC version of Don Bradman Cricket 17. That makes a controller the dependable choice for both Don Bradman Cricket and Don Bradman Cricket 17.

  • Connect a wired Xbox-compatible controller, or pair a compatible wireless model in Windows.
  • Confirm that Windows and Steam see the controller before opening the game.
  • Launch the game through Steam and check that the sticks respond in menus or a practice session.
  • If you are using a different gamepad standard, test it through Steam Input first; the documented support statement specifically names Xbox controllers.

The official help is written around analogue sticks rather than a complete keyboard layout. The right stick is central to batting, while both sticks are used for bowling. That is why a controller is more than a convenience: its continuous movement lets you choose direction, timing, line and release in ways that individual keyboard keys only approximate.

Choose a difficulty that teaches the controls

Don Bradman Cricket provides five difficulty levels that progressively deliver expanded controls and harder opponents. Start at Rookie even if you normally play sports games at a higher setting. The official help describes Rookie as the starting level: it assists foot movement and shot selection and lets you learn without immediately needing advanced or unorthodox shots.

Move up only after you can make intentional contact, select a sensible bowling length and complete routine fielding actions. A higher level changes the control burden as well as the quality of the opposition, so increasing difficulty before the basic motions are comfortable can make a problem look like poor timing when it is really unfamiliar control input.

Use Practice Nets before a full match

Open Practice Nets from the training options before beginning a serious match. Nets are designed for learning batting mechanics and allow you to change the variables that determine what you face. The official help identifies these settings:

  • Difficulty
  • Bowler type
  • Delivery type
  • Wicket side
  • Line
  • Length
  • Speed
  • Mentality
  • Batter or bowler handedness
  • Skill

Change one variable at a time. For example, start with a predictable pace bowler and a moderate speed, concentrate on watching the ball marker, then alter length or line once your response is consistent. Practising against several combinations is more useful than repeating one comfortable delivery because the match game asks you to read the ball before choosing a stroke.

A practical first session

  1. Enter Nets at Rookie difficulty.
  2. Use a pace bowler and leave the other settings at their most forgiving values.
  3. Watch the delivery marker without swinging for several balls so you can relate its position to the ball’s eventual length and direction.
  4. Use small right-stick movements to play controlled shots rather than immediately attempting power or unorthodox strokes.
  5. Change the line, then the length, and finally speed. This isolates the visual and timing decisions that each setting changes.

Batting with a controller

“The Right Stick is used for direction and timing of your shot,” according to the official game help. Treat the stick as a two-part decision: the direction of your movement selects where you want to play, and the timing of that movement determines when the bat meets the ball. Avoid holding a direction continuously before the delivery; read the marker and make the movement as the ball approaches.

Read the ball marker

The marker communicates the delivery’s projected pitch length and direction. The official manual identifies red as short and green as good length. Use the colour and position together: the colour tells you broadly how far the ball will pitch, while the marker’s location tells you where it is headed.

  • Red: prepare for a short delivery and avoid committing to a stroke intended for a full ball.
  • Green: treat it as a good-length delivery and choose a controlled response based on its line.
  • Marker position: use it to judge direction before moving the right stick.

These cues are especially valuable on Rookie because the assistance reduces the amount of footwork and shot selection you must manage at once. As you progress through the five difficulty levels, retain the same sequence: identify length, identify line, then move the right stick for direction and timing.

Build timing instead of guessing

Use Practice Nets to repeat one delivery until your contact point is predictable. If you are consistently early, delay the right-stick movement; if you are consistently late, begin it sooner. Do not change direction and timing at the same time while diagnosing a problem. First aim at a safe direction, then adjust when the bat meets the ball.

Once basic contact is reliable, vary wicket side and handedness in Nets. Those settings change the visual relationship between the incoming line and your intended shot, so practising both prevents you from learning a single-sided routine that fails when the batter or wicket orientation changes.

Pace-bowling setup and release

The official instructions describe pace bowling as a length-and-release sequence. Choose a length first, pull the right stick down as the bowler reaches the delivery stride, then push it up to release.

  1. Select a target length and line.
  2. As the bowler reaches the delivery stride, pull the right stick down.
  3. Push the right stick up to release the ball.
  4. Use the result to refine your release timing rather than changing several settings at once.

Release timing changes where the ball pitches. An earlier release sends the ball closer to the batsman, producing a fuller delivery. A later release produces a shorter delivery. If every ball is too full, delay the upward release slightly; if every ball is too short, release earlier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practise a single line at several lengths in Nets. This teaches you to separate the chosen target from the release timing. After that, add changes of line and speed, then vary bowler type and skill so that your routine survives less predictable deliveries.

Spin-bowling setup

Spin uses both sticks for different jobs. The official help says the left stick generates spin and can be rotated smoothly through up to three rotations. The right stick controls line and release, with its final direction setting the line.

  1. Choose the intended line with the right stick.
  2. Rotate the left stick smoothly to generate the amount and type of spin you want; the instructions allow up to three rotations.
  3. Complete the delivery with the right-stick direction that sets the final line and release.
  4. Observe the result in Nets and adjust one stick at a time.

Do not treat the left-stick rotation as a series of unrelated button presses. Smooth movement is the documented technique. Start with fewer rotations so you can see how the ball responds, then add rotation while keeping the right-stick line consistent. Practising against different batter handedness and wicket sides helps you learn how the same spin input appears from different viewpoints.

Fielding assistance: pick the right level

You can choose manual, semi-assisted or fully assisted fielding. The modes differ in who makes the movement and decision choices.

Mode What you control Best use
Fully assisted The AI makes fielding decisions. Learning match flow while concentrating on batting and bowling.
Semi-assisted You control catching and throws; assistance handles other fielding decisions. Bridging the gap between automatic fielding and full control.
Manual You control movement, catching and throws. Players ready to manage every fielding action themselves.

Start with fully assisted mode if you are still learning where the ball is going. Switch to semi-assisted when you want to practise the decisions that matter most after a chance is created: taking the catch and selecting the throw. Choose manual only when you are comfortable moving the fielder, timing the catch and directing the throw without the game taking over.

Changing assistance is a training decision, not a permanent commitment. You can use fully assisted fielding while learning batting and bowling, then replay similar situations in semi-assisted or manual mode once the other disciplines are stable.

Keyboard-only play: the unofficial route

The official Steam listing says a controller is required, and no official keyboard layout was identified for these games. A community Scribd document titled Don Bradman Cricket 14 & 17 Keyboard Setup describes a KeyboardSplitter-based workaround. KeyboardSplitter is used to emulate the controller-style inputs that the game expects; it is not an official game feature.

The same document lists arrow-key combinations for batting shots and keys for changing the field. Because those mappings are community-created, treat them as examples rather than a guaranteed universal layout. Different KeyboardSplitter profiles, game versions and Steam Input settings can produce different results.

What keyboard emulation can and cannot do

  • It can: translate selected keys into the controller-style commands expected by the game.
  • It cannot: provide the same continuous analogue movement as a physical stick. A key is generally on or off, while batting direction, batting timing, bowling line and bowling release are designed around analogue movement.
  • It may require: installing and configuring KeyboardSplitter, selecting the correct virtual controller and checking that Steam does not apply a conflicting layout.
  • It is not official support: troubleshooting must begin with the community profile and virtual-controller configuration rather than an in-game keyboard menu.

Safer keyboard setup sequence

  1. Keep the controller disconnected while testing the virtual profile, so you know which device is producing each input.
  2. Configure KeyboardSplitter using the community mapping as a starting point.
  3. Expose the virtual controller to Windows and verify that its buttons and axes move in the operating-system game-controller test.
  4. Launch the game through Steam and test the profile in Practice Nets, not a competitive match.
  5. Check batting direction and timing first, then pace-bowling length and release, and finally fielding actions.
  6. If a key triggers more than one action, remove duplicate bindings in the splitter profile or Steam Input.

If the virtual device is not detected, the game will continue to behave as though no controller is present. If inputs feel binary or shots are consistently mistimed, that is a limitation of keyboard emulation rather than evidence that the game’s batting system is broken.

Controller versus keyboard at a glance

Decision factor Xbox-compatible controller Keyboard with emulation
Official support Explicitly supported; Steam lists a controller as required. Community-supplied mapping; no official keyboard layout identified.
Analogue precision Direct stick input for batting direction and timing, bowling line and release. Keys approximate analogue input and may not reproduce fine movement.
Setup effort Connect the controller and launch through Steam. Configure KeyboardSplitter or another virtual-controller profile and resolve possible Steam Input conflicts.
Beginner learning Matches the controller-focused official help, Rookie assistance and Practice Nets. Rookie and Nets still help, but the tutorial language and mechanics assume stick input.

For a first installation, the controller has the fewest unknowns. Keyboard emulation is mainly useful when a controller is unavailable or when you specifically need keyboard access and accept additional setup and less precise analogue control.

Common problems and fixes

The game says a controller is missing

Reconnect the Xbox-compatible controller before launching Steam, then verify that Windows detects it. Close and reopen the game after Steam recognises the device. If you are using KeyboardSplitter, confirm that the virtual controller is visible to Windows; a keyboard profile alone does not satisfy a requirement for a controller device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batting shots go in the wrong direction

Return to Rookie difficulty and Practice Nets. Watch the marker’s direction, then make a smaller right-stick movement. Remember that the right stick sets both direction and timing; an accurate direction with poor timing can still produce an unintended result.

Pace deliveries are always too short or too full

Keep the selected length unchanged and adjust only the upward right-stick release. Earlier release sends the ball closer to the batsman; later release creates a shorter delivery.

Spin lacks control

Use a smooth left-stick rotation and reduce the number of rotations while learning. Keep the right stick responsible for line and final release, then alter line only after the spin motion is repeatable.

Fielding feels overwhelming

Set fielding to fully assisted, then move to semi-assisted when you want to practise catches and throws. Manual mode adds movement as well as catching and throwing, so it is best treated as a later step rather than a requirement for the first match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keyboard keys do nothing

Check that KeyboardSplitter is running, that its virtual controller is enabled, and that Steam Input is not replacing the profile with another layout. Test the virtual axes outside the game before changing the in-game difficulty or controls. Because the mapping is unofficial, a profile that works for one installation may need adjustment on another.

A progression plan for new players

  1. First, establish the hardware: use an Xbox-compatible controller whenever possible and confirm it is detected before launching.
  2. Second, reduce the control load: select Rookie difficulty and fully assisted fielding.
  3. Third, learn the visual cue: in Practice Nets, identify red short deliveries, green good-length deliveries and the marker’s direction.
  4. Fourth, stabilise batting: use the right stick for deliberate direction and timing, changing one variable at a time.
  5. Fifth, add bowling: practise pace release timing, then spin rotation and line.
  6. Sixth, take responsibility for defence: change fielding to semi-assisted, then manual after catches, throws and movement are comfortable.
  7. Finally, increase difficulty: move through the five levels only when the previous level’s controls feel intentional rather than accidental.

This sequence keeps the game’s assistance aligned with the skill you are practising. It also gives you a clear diagnostic path: use Nets to reproduce a problem, adjust one input or setting, and test again before changing the whole configuration.
