Yes. YouTube Live supports 4K (2160p) at 60 frames per second, and its HDR guidance specifies 10-bit video encoded with H.265/HEVC. Together, those settings enable a 4K60 10-bit HDR stream—but only if your source, encoder, and signal settings support the whole chain. YouTube’s support for a format does not mean every encoder or ingest codec can send it.

What YouTube requires for 4K60 10-bit HDR

YouTube’s live encoder settings list 4K/2160p at 60 fps. Its HDR guidance specifies 10-bit video, BT.2020 color, and either PQ or HLG transfer characteristics; YouTube recommends HLG. For the HDR workflow, use H.265/HEVC. YouTube’s guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR, so the AV1 bitrate row is not an HDR recommendation.

These are separate requirements: a 4K60 signal can be SDR, and a 10-bit signal is not automatically HDR. To deliver the combination in the question, the source must provide HDR and the encoder must preserve and transmit the required 10-bit HDR format.

Bitrate and protocol settings

YouTube’s official encoder settings page, accessed in 2026 and undated, lists these 4K60 bitrates. For 10-bit HDR, use the H.265/HEVC figures, not the AV1 figures.

4K60 codec row Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate Use for 10-bit HDR?
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Yes; YouTube specifies HEVC for HDR.
AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps No; YouTube’s HDR guidance excludes AV1.
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps No; these are the H.264 row’s figures, but YouTube’s HDR guidance specifies HEVC.

The published bitrate is the video bitrate guidance, not a guarantee that a connection with the same upload speed will be stable. Leave network headroom for audio and fluctuations, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Use the current settings for your specific encoder as well as YouTube’s published guidance.

YouTube says HDR can be sent over RTMP(S) or HLS. Its general encoder guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), and says HLS may be used if the encoder does not support HDR over RTMP. For hardware HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Check that your encoder supports the selected protocol and its requirements.

OBS settings for an HDR stream

YouTube’s HDR instructions list OBS 30.1 or newer with a hardware HEVC encoder. The source must itself be HDR; an SDR source does not become HDR simply because HDR output is selected.

  1. In OBS, select a hardware H.265/HEVC encoder that supports Main 10 and 4K60.
  2. Set the encoder profile to Main 10.
  3. Enable HDR and use P010 (4:2:0) as the video format.
  4. Set the color space to Rec. 2100 PQ or Rec. 2100 HLG; YouTube recommends HLG.
  5. Configure the stream for 2160p at 60 fps and use the HEVC 4K60 bitrate guidance above.
  6. For YouTube’s general HDR setup, leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked.
  7. Connect OBS to the correct YouTube stream key, then test the complete signal path and check stream health before the event.

YouTube’s OBS guidance notes Windows 11 Auto HDR as a possible route when an HDR monitor is present. That does not remove the need to verify that the source, OBS configuration, encoder, and output signal are actually carrying HDR.

Choosing an encoder or hardware appliance

Before buying or configuring an encoder, verify the exact model and setup against the full signal chain—not just a “4K” or “60 fps” label.

  • Can it encode 2160p at 60 fps?
  • Does it support H.265/HEVC Main 10 and 10-bit HDR?
  • Can it handle BT.2020 and PQ or HLG correctly?
  • Does it support RTMP(S) or HLS for HDR? If using HLS, can it meet YouTube’s playlist, segment, and HTTPS requirements?
  • Can your upload connection sustain the selected bitrate with headroom?
  • Is it a software encoder, hardware appliance, or cloud service, and does that option suit the source you need to capture?

YouTube’s encoder directory describes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as streaming up to 2160p60 and AWS Elemental MediaLive as supporting live streaming up to 4Kp60 HEVC. Those descriptions do not establish that every configuration of either product meets every 10-bit HDR requirement. YouTube also notes that directory products are not made by YouTube; check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the exact model and configuration.

A capture card is not universally required. Whether you need one depends on whether the source is a camera, console, or computer and how the chosen encoder receives that signal. The camera or game source must provide the intended HDR signal.

Latency and pre-event checks

YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K streams. Its encoder settings page says 4K streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency. If near-real-time interaction is essential, account for that limitation when choosing the resolution and workflow.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The stream is 4K60 but not HDR. The source is SDR, HDR output is disabled, or the encoder is not preserving HDR metadata and color settings. Check the source and verify HEVC Main 10, P010, BT.2020, and PQ or HLG throughout the signal path.
The encoder cannot select 10-bit HEVC. The chosen encoder or hardware configuration may not support the required format. Verify Main 10 and HDR support for the exact encoder and configuration; YouTube ingest support alone cannot add encoder capability.
The stream drops frames or appears unstable. The upload connection may lack headroom at the configured bitrate, or the encoder may be overloaded. Check YouTube stream health, encoder status, and network stability; test before going live.
HDR over RTMP does not work with the chosen encoder. The encoder may not support HDR over RTMP(S). Check its current documentation. YouTube allows HDR over HLS as an alternative, subject to the required HLS segment, playlist, and HTTPS behavior.
Viewers see more delay than expected. 4K streams use normal latency rather than YouTube’s low-latency option. Plan for normal latency or reconsider whether 4K is essential for an interactive stream.

For a pre-recorded 24/7 YouTube stream

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing continuously rather than broadcast a live camera or production, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; it is not a camera encoder and streams to YouTube only. StreamNeo lists one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and says it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. See StreamNeo for details.

Or let it run in the cloud: nothing has to stay on at home, and there is no computer or OBS that must remain running. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos at the quality they were made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. Upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
