Why 49.7 days matters
Microsoft’s GetTickCount API documentation, last updated July 11, 2024, says the function returns the number of milliseconds since the system started. The value is stored as a 32-bit unsigned number, or DWORD. Once it reaches its maximum, it wraps to zero. That happens after roughly 232 milliseconds—about 49.7 days of continuous operation.
This is an uptime-counter rollover, not a countdown that tells Windows to shut down. The counter measures elapsed time since startup rather than the date or time shown by the system clock. Microsoft’s Windows Time documentation describes this elapsed-time format as existing primarily for compatibility with 16-bit Windows.
The documented GetTickCount resolution is limited by the system timer; Microsoft gives a typical range of 10 to 16 milliseconds. The API documentation also says the count includes time spent in sleep or hibernation. These details describe the API documentation, not a measurement of a particular Windows 98 computer.

A rollover changes the counter’s numerical value from a large number to a small one even though the computer has kept running. Code that assumes the number always increases may then mistake a new timestamp for an older one. Microsoft’s IIS 7 example shows a specific feature stopping its performance-counter updates because of this kind of comparison error. It illustrates a possible software bug; it does not demonstrate that Windows 98 itself crashes at rollover.
The cited Microsoft API reference documents the counter behavior, but it does not identify a Windows 98 component responsible for a system hang at 49.7 days. Nor do the cited sources verify a Windows 98-specific fix or a universal failure. Without a Windows 98-specific primary source, naming a particular driver or component as the cause would go beyond what is established.

What a developer should do about counter wrap
Microsoft advises developers to account for overflow when comparing elapsed times. For software targeting Windows Vista and later, Microsoft documents GetTickCount64, which avoids the ordinary 32-bit rollover. That API is a development option for later Windows; it is not a fix to install on Windows 98.
Raymond Chen, a Microsoft engineer, explained in a November 13, 2014, Microsoft Developer Blogs post that GetTickCount is meant to measure intervals: callers can obtain two readings and subtract them to find elapsed time. The absolute counter value is not meaningful on its own. That distinction matters at rollover: applications should reason about elapsed intervals rather than assume an uptime reading will increase forever.

How to interpret the Windows 98 claim
- If someone says “Windows 98 crashes after 49.7 days,” treat it as an oversimplification unless they can point to a Windows 98-specific account of the failure.
- The 49.7-day figure itself has a clear explanation: a 32-bit millisecond count runs out of values and wraps to zero.
- A particular application or feature could fail if its code handles wrapped timestamps incorrectly, but the cited IIS 7 case is from later Windows and does not identify a Windows 98 failure.
