A phone hotspot usually drains its battery faster, but it does not automatically multiply the data used by the same online activity. Total data depends on what connected devices do, while your carrier may count hotspot traffic against a separate allowance or apply other limits.

Does a phone hotspot use more data?

Not simply because you turned on a hotspot. A hotspot shares your phone’s internet connection with another device; the amount of data used depends on that device’s online activity. The same task does not require a fixed extra amount just because it is tethered.

In practice, a laptop or tablet may use more data than you expect from phone use. It can stream at a higher resolution, download large files, install software updates, or sync cloud backups. Those activities—not the hotspot itself—can raise the total. A larger screen may encourage different viewing habits, but screen size alone does not determine a video’s data use.

Check what connected devices are doing

  • Video: Lower streaming quality when data is limited; higher resolutions generally require more data.
  • Updates and downloads: Pause automatic app or system updates and large downloads until you have Wi-Fi.
  • Cloud sync and backups: Pause them during a hotspot session if they are not urgent.
  • Other connected devices: Disconnect devices that are not in use. A device left connected may still perform background activity.

For more on managing hotspot data, see T-Mobile’s data-usage guidance and Android’s guide to using a phone as a hotspot.

Will hotspot use count against a separate data allowance?

That depends on your carrier and plan. Some carriers limit tethering, provide a distinct hotspot allowance, restrict speeds after a threshold, or charge extra. Do not assume that all carriers count hotspot data the same way as ordinary phone data.

Before relying on a hotspot, check your current plan details and account usage meter, or contact your carrier. The allowance shown for a particular carrier or plan may not apply to your account or remain current. Google’s Android tethering instructions note that some carriers limit or charge extra for tethering. AT&T also explains plan-specific limits in its mobile hotspot support information.

Does using a hotspot drain your phone battery faster?

Usually, yes. Expect faster battery drain while your phone is providing a connection, especially during a long session. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal battery percentage per hour or a reliable runtime; actual results vary by phone, network conditions, connected devices, and what those devices are doing.

Apple says iPhone Personal Hotspot shares cellular internet and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB connections. Its instructions say connected devices automatically disconnect when the hotspot is not in use to help save battery. Android advises plugging in while tethering and turning the hotspot off afterward; Android phones may also offer an option to turn the hotspot off automatically when no devices are connected. AT&T similarly warns that hotspot use can drain a phone quickly.

Ways to reduce battery drain

  • Plug the phone into power while tethering when practical, or use a portable battery pack.
  • Turn the hotspot off when you have finished.
  • Enable automatic hotspot shutoff when no devices are connected, if your phone offers it.
  • Disconnect devices you are no longer using.

See Apple’s Personal Hotspot instructions, Google’s Android tethering instructions, and AT&T’s hotspot guidance for device and carrier details.

How to make a phone hotspot use less data and power

  1. Check your plan and usage meter. Confirm the hotspot allowance, any limits or fees, and how much data remains with your carrier.
  2. Connect only the devices you need. Disconnect idle devices so they cannot continue background activity.
  3. Reduce data-heavy activity. Lower video quality and pause updates, large downloads, and cloud backups until you have a less limited connection.
  4. Keep the phone powered. Plug it in for longer sessions or carry a power bank if you will be away from an outlet.
  5. Switch tethering off when finished. If available, enable automatic shutoff when no devices are connected.

When is a separate hotspot device worth considering?

For occasional short sessions away from power, phone tethering may be convenient if your plan supports it. If you tether frequently or for long periods, compare it with a standalone hotspot or mobile router. Consider how long each session lasts, whether you need to preserve your phone’s battery and availability, how many devices need a connection, coverage where you use it, your carrier’s hotspot allowance, and the cost of separate equipment and service. Neither option is best for everyone.
