Charging is required for Bluetooth-powered Air Actions, such as using the pen button as a remote camera or media control.
What works when the S Pen is uncharged?
Writing and drawing
You can use the S Pen tip for handwriting and drawing on the Galaxy S22 Ultra display without charging it. This direct screen input is separate from the pen’s wireless remote features.
Air Actions and remote controls
Air Actions use Bluetooth Low Energy, so the S Pen must be charged for them to work. Depending on the app and settings, Air Actions can include camera controls—such as taking a picture or switching cameras—and media playback controls. The available commands vary by app. Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra Air Actions guidance explains the feature, while its charging guidance covers the power requirement.
How to charge the S Pen
- Insert the S Pen into the dedicated slot in the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
- If Air Actions are disabled, Samsung Singapore says the pen charges only while the phone itself is charging. Check that Air Actions are enabled if you expect the pen to charge while the phone is not plugged in.
Samsung Australia states that a full charge takes about seven minutes. It also gives figures of up to 20 minutes of continuous Air Action use and 24 hours of standby. These are Samsung’s stated specifications, not independently tested or guaranteed results; actual behavior may vary.

What if the S Pen battery is dead?
Writing and drawing on the screen should remain available, but Air Actions will not work until the pen is charged. Insert it into the phone’s slot to recharge. You do not need to charge the pen just to continue using it as a stylus.
Will another S Pen work with the Galaxy S22 Ultra?
Compatibility depends on the exact S Pen model. Some S Pens can write on the display but do not support Air Actions. If you are borrowing or replacing the pen, check that it is specifically compatible with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and supports its remote features. Samsung’s S Pen compatibility guidance describes this distinction.

Samsung’s Ireland support article puts the requirement plainly: “The S pen must be charged before you can use the S pen air actions feature.”
